Tufts MBS 2013-2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just checked my decision and was accepted. Best of luck to those waiting to hear back. I was complete 3/1.

Was accepted today too! Completed on 3/11! Anyone down for starting a fb group?

I was wondering if there are any MBSers who applied successfully while in their first/MBS year of the program. I was recently accepted into the program and planned to enroll in it while applying this cycle (my MCAT score expires after it and I would like to avoid retaking it). I wanted to seek some advice and thoughts on how to get the most out of program before I accepted my offer. Please let me know if you'd be available to chat and answer a few specific questions. Thanks!

Did anyone send letters through interfolio? who/where did you send it? For those that did use interfolio, did you still fill the info out on your recommenders on the tufts app website? I didn't want my recommenders to be emailed unnecessarily.

Thanks guys!

Use the email interfolio provides for your recommenders. And then email your letters to tufts via interfolio because Tufts does not accept interfolio letters using their delivery system.

do you know what email address I should send to? Can't seem to find it.Thanks!

1. How did you do in the program (how were your grades after completion)? How does that compare to the rest of your class?

... The great thing about Tufts is that EVERYTHING IS CURVED! The medical students are straight Pass/Fail with no class rankings, and their "Pass" is a 65% on the tests. So what the MBS does is they set a 65% as a B- (3.0), and make 6 divisions for up to 100 (ie. a 65-71 is a B-, 71-77 B, 77-83 B+ etc.). Most averages on the tests were around 83%, so the grades are really inflated!! At the medical school interviews this year, most ADCOMS don't know this and so were "impressed" with my 3.6 thinking that we had a standard 90-100 = A etc scale!

Someone commented already, but I figured I should add my two cents. I personally don't think hockeyteen22 is incorrect in some respect, but I'd advise readers to be VERY careful and try not to interpret it as "har, har, this must be an easy SMP if I can slack off and still pull off an A- cause I only need a mid-80." You still need to beat out about half the medical class. That is half of students who had 3.6/3.7 or so undergraduate GPA.

Just to note: Hockeyteen22 is a "slacker" with a 3.5/31 MCAT. How one studies, how effective their studying methods are and, of course, innate ability are important not just the number of hours put in. Also, hockyteen, you have a ridiculous number of EC. Congrats on your acceptance, but I think they might have been more impressed with your dedication since you already had very good stats for DO.

do you know what email address I should send to? Can't seem to find it.Thanks!

I seem to recall there being an email somewhere in the application (something for emailing MCAT confirmation etc?), but if not email the office and ask.

I've also recently been admitted into the Tufts MBS program for Fall 2013... Anyone know if Tufts does a roommate matching program?

I have a quick question... Did everyone who got an acceptance get a email from a professor listing stuff that they really like in their app... I'm surprised they took the time to do that!

I didn't get this email. However, I did get one from EVMS telling me everything wrong with my application, and suggestions on how to fix it. I thought that was a great touch.

What sort of thesis do people normally write for this program?

Decided not to go to Tufts, hopefully someone here can use my spot!

What sort of thesis do people normally write for this program?

It seems like most people do a basic sciences literature thesis, which is the least time consuming. Some people do a clinical literature thesis, which is not super time consuming, but requires some flexibility because you are working with very busy clinicians. And some people do a laboratory thesis, which requires 6 months full time or the equivalent, so it is the most time intensive, but if you do not have other research experience it is a good idea. There is the possibility of getting any type of thesis published, although I would say it is the most likely with lab thesis.

Any idea on what the general stats are for Tufts?

Just waiting for my stupid transcript to get there. It was send over a week ago. Hope it wasn't lost in the mail. Really hoping to get into this program. Thoughts on my chances?

(3.2 cGPA, 2.83 sGPA (really horrible one semester), Dean's List my final 3 semesters in undergrad while taking upper level science courses, 26R MCAT, 300 hours OR shadowing, multiple research positions, pending publication as second author, accepted abstracts, 2 poster presentation at national conferences).

I'm really hoping I get in here. I want to go to medical school so bad it hurts.

Please think nice thoughts for me. 🙂

sent back the prepaid waitlist notification, hoping I can get off of it!
(Wonder why it couldn't be done electronically...or is it more of the 'personal touch' feel they're going for...)

Sent in additional letters of recommendation...any ideas for other things that might be favourable?

Hoping for some amount of waitlist movement...congrats to everyone who's admitted and planning to attend!

Hey everyone,

I am going to go ahead and make a group on Facebook for Tufts MBS 2013-2014 who have been accepted and WILL be enrolling.

If you have been accepted and are going to be enrolled, just post your name so I can add you on Facebook and get a group started.

See you all soon!

Is anyone else who is accepted going to be attending the open house event on May 30th? I know its a bit early to look for housing, but its never too early to look for roommates. This would probably be a great opporunity to do so.

i am going to make the facebook group public, but first need to be friends with someone who will be going to tufts so I can invite them to make the group. They won't let you just make a group by yourself.

So, if someone wants to PM me their facebook page I can get this thing started.

🙁 I've been put on waiting list... hopefully I will hear back with acceptance very soon. Anyone giving up their spots?

Better than a rejection! Did you find out through the portal? I haven't heard anything and I applied late April. I thought the turn around would be quicker than this.

Yea I checked the online portal and clicked on "View Decision"
I was glad that I wasn't rejected but it's going to be long waiting game.
Called the office to ask few questions about the waiting list process. She said they won't take anyone off the waiting list until the July 20th deadline. 🙁 and she encouraged not to give up your spots if you are accepted to other programs. She said there might be little if not no movement at all.

I am waiting from other schools and already got accepted to Drexel IHS, but I do not wanna go there.

When were you complete?

When were you complete?

I submitted my application mid-March, was complete by early April.
I called few times to check on my application. She said the usual turn around is about 6-8 weeks. But I've heard some people got their acceptance earlier.

I will be giving up my spot, hopefully you get pulled off the waiting list! Good luck 🙂

Complete since April 13 and still nothing, been almost 8 weeks.

Anybody have any suggestions for one bedroom housing in the area or any other good locations?

You're going to get a PHPD Housing email sooner or later. It gives a rather good introduction to the different neighborhoods of Greater Boston. Although, nothing beats visiting the neighborhoods in person and seeing for yourself.

Got an acceptance today.

Stats:
cGPA: 3.33 (3.26 at graduation, took some postbacc classes)
sGPA: 3.21
MCAT: 29P (V11/B10/P8), going to take it again before starting
-Been working in research since graduating in 2011, one publication, couple on the way
-EMT certified
-tons of recent shadowing experience, but didn't put that on my app
-got some good grades after graduating too (orgo II, biochem, microbiology, anatomy)

If I can get in then, well... See you guys September.

did anyone get off waitlist from Tufts yet? I know they told me they won't untill July 15th deadline but I applied sorta late.

Has anyone on the waitlist heard back from Tufts?!

I've just completed my application but if people are already wait-listed, it seems I won't have a chance!

I STILL haven't heard back, been 8+ weeks. Ridiculous.

Everything is complete in my app, I emailed them about a month ago.

I would call them in case they have forgotten about your file under loads of other applications. When I called 4 weeks after my app was complete, they said give it 2 more weeks since it will take them 6-8 weeks to complete. I called again the week after and got waitlisted the following week.

Does anyone know if a laptop is absolutely necessary from day 1? (I know on the website it says a laptop is required, but is it required just for in-class exams?)

I believe anatomy and probably other classes will be taught mostly from computer-based software so unless you want to share someones computer or use a public computer to study all the time, I'd get a laptop. You don't need a macbook pro, nowadays you can get a decent laptop for a couple hundred bucks, google's chromebook is $250 on amazon.

Question about the program, if an alum or anyone at Tufts can answer:

Has anyone had any difficulty getting paid to do thesis research? How are you set up with a research mentor? Can you get credit for doing research outside of Tufts for the thesis?

I just finished the program too and am currently working on my thesis.

Very, very few people (if any) get paid while working on their thesis. I think there are ways you can go about getting paid, but it's more complicated to get that organized and probably not something you want to be dealing with as you're attempting to finish classes and get things set up with your mentor and such.

In the spring, you're given a 50+ pg booklet of all the different faculty members/clinicians/departments who are willing to take on thesis students. This booklet also lists their main academic interests so you can align a topic that interests YOU with someone who is an expert in that field.

You CAN have a mentor outside of Tufts, but you have to jump through a few extra hoops (i.e. get that person's CV approved, have 2 additional readers instead of 1, etc).

Let me know if anybody else has other questions!
