Ok, so I already have a deposit down at Penn. I loved what I saw and I could see myself being happy there. I believe in their program and like how it's very well balanced.

Now, I got an interview invite from Tufts and need to respond by Feb 15. I've heard some really good things about Tufts.

Here's the thing, I'm tired of this whole interview process and wouldn't mind to just settle down on a choice. Penn seems like a pretty good choice to settle with. Would I be missing something so great if I don't go to the Tufts interview? I think it would just complicate things and make me have some doubts about Penn although from what I know, I think I'd end up picking Penn anyways.

What can people who interviewed at both Penn and Tufts tell me. I hear Tufts clinics are cool and more advanced than Penn's. I also hear that both schools are difficult in the first two years. Penn has their exams more spread out and Tufts uses block exams right?

Comments needed, come on people 👍

I would love for people to try and sell Tufts. I dont' want to feel like I gave up the chance at a good school and a wonderful city.

And a last thing, I don't really have the time or money to go on another trip to Boston just for the hell of it. So I'd only go if I really decide that I might pick Tufts over Penn.

audio,
my would-be penn classmate! I was in the same situation as you about a month ago. I had gotten into Penn but received an interview at Tufts. After some debate, I decided to go and interview. Since then, I've gotten into Tufts and received the Merit Scholarship as well. Here are my thoughts:

Tufts:
Pros: nicer facilities than Penn (you know the dreadful Penn basement), nice sim labs, everthing is super clean and nice, I loved Philly, but Boston seems to be more fun of a city (b/c I'm a girl and I love to shop and there's more to do), you start pre-clinicals as soon as your first semester (you start working with a handpiece to do composite and amalgam fillings), really strong clinical program, lots of patients, the faculty and staff seem to really care about your needs, there's a nice dorm 2 minutes away from the dental school, super close to the subway (T) so it's really easy for patients to go to the dental school, really nice students, lots of opportunities to do research and volunteer, you get two months to study for part I of your boards (at Penn, according to Dr. DeRossi, you get only a couple of weeks)
cons: probably not as fancy as Penn, lower specializing rates, not connected to the main Tufts campus (it's near Chinatown), they do have exam blocks, they work you very hard your first two years (they cover a lot of medicine courses), etc.

I hope that this is helpful!
p.s. I decided to go to Tufts! 🙂

Wow, congrats! Thanks a lot for your sharing your experiences. Now, if only I could convince myself to fly down to Boston again! Good luck at Tufts. I'm going to have to think about it all day tomorrow and make a crunch time decision.

Audio, my advice is that if you think you even have the slightest interest in Tufts and that after visiting it you may reconsider Penn, then I think it will definitely be to your advantage to go to the interview. I was kind of in the same position, I had already been accepted to other schools and kind of didn't want to go down to Boston again. But I couldn't have made a smarter choice because I loved everything about the school. It's got great students, faculty, and facilities. It also has one of the top clinical programs in the country and consistently ranks very high in board scores. Tufts is the school I'm headed to this September. Good luck in your decision.

I'd check it out bro...Tufts is a great school. Beantown's got an edge over Philly too.

Audio,
I just got accepted to Tufts with the Merit scholarship and am pumped about the program. I have had two cousins who both graduated from the program and who would vouch that they are glad chose the school over all others. I've interviewed at a number of good schools i.e. Columbia, UW... Not Penn-(I didn't get an interview for some reason) 🙁 . Anyway, Tufts had the most balance clinically and academically of all the programs I've seen. The price is the only thing that makes me hesistant. Hence, the only school that could trump Tufts for me would be UW (in-state). I'd say go to Boston and check it out.

Yeah, it was a really difficult decision. I really loved both schools but at the end, I chose the traditional program. Also, I went to a local school undergrad and have always wanted to have the chance to live in the East coast.

Audio! I've decided to go to Tufts!

Boston is a great city, and Tufts is in the middle of Boston. You've got Chinatown across the street, downtown crossing (w/ shopping) a five minute walk away, the theatre district near by, and just a bunch of other restaurants and shops around. Tufts seems like a really great school that really prepares their students to become great dentists. The facilities are really updated, and have they sent you that thick booklet? It has their National Board scores which totall rock. What else.. hmm, I'm just really excited to go to Tufts. The first two years seems intense with classes and exams (block schedule), but then once we get to clinics and stuff, it also seems hard but very interesting.

I think I would definitely check out Tufts even though you have decided on Penn for a while now, just because if you never check it out, you might not know what you're missing. Or, you might not like Tufts and be even happier that you went to Penn.

Good luck!

They sent me an acceptance packet postmarked Jan. 30th. Somehow I didn't get it here on the west coast until Friday, Feb 10th! They updated their AADSAS on the 6th, so I knew it was coming, but it was pretty tough to pull $1500 out of thin air (certified bank check) and get it off by Monday. My deposit arrived on Wednesday, which was the final deadline. Cut it pretty close. Hope that doesn't happen to you.
