Not much info on here about Tufts, especially recently. Interviewed there last month, and my impressions were: small program, fairly friendly people, great location, humane work schedule, but with good, complex cases, new chair from BID, who seems like he will be great for the program. Overall positive. However, most of the residents seemed to be FMGs, which makes me wonder what I was missing. Also, they were reviewed by the ACGME this year and got a 3 year cycle, after their last cycle being 5 years. I assume this is because of the new chair, but again, it makes me wonder. Any input? Feel free to pm me as well. Thanks!

I understand the concerns you expressed, but I loved it there. I think that Dr. Segal is really going to invigorate the program. Dr. Ahmed is a great program director.

I love the place, and if you liked it, I would consider going for it.

Dr. Segal is great. He was our Vice Chair for education at the Brigham (not BI, though that's also an excellent program.) Under Dr. Segal's direction, the place will definitely continue to improve. He's also actively recruiting more staff from good places (two of my friends from CHB recently signed with him). The peds anesthesia group is particularly strong. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, they're very helpful! Anyone else have some input?

A great Peds Dept. Dr Ahmed is a very supportive program director. I finished the program in 2006.... I was prepared for private practice. There has been some changes there since I left but I'm sure it;s for the better.

Bump - ANY other info would be most helpful to those of us in the decision process. Program looks good but its tough to get a good feel for how the program is NOW with the new Chair and PD - have heard both good and bad things. If any Tufts peeps could comment we'd all greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hey wondering if any current or recent residents could chime in on the Tufts Program.

My impression was also that the leadership and faculty were great. Strong clinical experience. Good fellowship/job placement.

Two questions lingering...1. Are residents are happy with the work environment and people? 2. Do they have time to enjoy life outside of residency? Unfortunately I didn't get to talk to as many residents as I would have liked on my interview day or the dinner night before. I really didn't get a sense of culture of the residents.

My fiance can transfer her job to Boston and I want to rank them very high on my list. I left other strong programs feeling like I spent much more time with the residents and had a chance to see what the people were like. Unfortunately the fiance doesn't have a job in any of these cities. We are making the list together and trying to strike a balance between a good program, her job, and our happiness with work/life. Any advice would be appreciated. Feel free to PM me. THANKS!

I should add to my post that I don't want to sound like some whiny baby medical student that wants to steer clear of programs that have tough work loads even though they provide excellent clinical training by asking indirect questions like "do you have time to enjoy the city". On the other hand, I am interested in workload hours and balance in life because I believe it will affect my overall rank list. Also, there's nothing wrong with 65-75 hrs a week if you're working in a friendly atmosphere with good people and getting great training. Especially if the fiance gets to keep a great job 🙂
