Tulane Acceptance Range

Just called Tulane and found out that I was in the "acceptance range..." SUch a slap in the face, as my interviewer told me that he was going to "highly recommend" that I be accepted...I guess I know firsthand that those statements mean jack.

Perhaps, but Tulane seems to be notorious for filling its class early, given that August MCATers are at a "terrible disadvantage" in the admissions process, and that they begin accepting people well before October 15. If you look on the acceptance sticky thread, Tulane probably has the most names listed, more than any other school... granted SDN is atypical, but I would reckon that Tulane has already accepted a lot of students by now.

stalk them, they want you to want them.

call and talk to the dean about not getting in and how much you want to go there, and most of all don't take to heart anything said at the interview (here or anywhere)

tulane is in new orleans and its admissions are somewhat political in nature. each student gets to put in a 'good word' for those who are applying and people have gotten off the waitlist when they otherwise wouldn't have because of this. if you know a current student hit them up for that rec and don't feel like belitting yourself or anything. that city and school (like many others) work on connections, so use that to your advantage.

Acceptable range means that if you write a LOI, you are definately in. The Dean there (I forgot his name) loves people who love Tulane, so I wouldn't worry about it. Write a letter talking about how dissappointed you are and how Tulane is one of your top choices and you might hear back soon.

Some of the above comments are almost true, but not quite.

MOST people are put on the acceptance range this time of year. Do not take this as a slap in the face. However, while it is possible for it to happen earlier, most movement from the acceptance range happens once May rolls around.

So the moral of the story is- send in LOI's, updates, etc. Don't be psycho about it- something every six weeks or so now, maybe more often as it gets closer to May. Don't be discouraged if you don't hear anything back- you usually won't. Don't worry- they're getting the stuff.

If you want to go here more than any other med school, let them know, and let them know why. Make sure you explain what it is about Tulane that you think makes it the perfect place for you. And be aware that the admissions people have pretty good bull$hit filters. If you're just trying to get in somewhere and you don't know much about Tulane, they'll know. But if you honestly want to come here more than anywhere else, they'll be receptive to that.

I can't thank you guys enough...I was *really* upset when I found out, and now that you all have given me a plan of attack, I feel much better...

It's good to hear that most people are put on the acceptance range....This was my first post-interview feedback and I took it as a reflection of my interviewing abilities...

I am going to draft my letter to Dean Pisano right after finals.

When I interviewed last January, I was told that there were still open spots, although my group was the last that would be interviewing for outright admission. So chances are that there are still spots available.

I could be wrong about this, but I don't think they go back and compare each batch of interviewees against the previous ones. They just decide on your file once while they're interviewing, and that's where you stay. Then when the big end-of-cycle shuffle happens, and people start dropping acceptances, they look at their acceptance range people again.

As for what my esteemed colleague Dr. Seaworth said 🙂, I actually have not heard anything about being able to put in a good word for an applicant. And I had no connections here pulling strings for me either (that I'm aware of). So you can get in without them. I think the biggest factor is you, and your sincerity in telling them why you like the school.

To clairify, as opposed to other schools who have waitlists which are ranked or divided into teirs, tulane calls everyone who is neither accepted outright or rejected the "acceptable range". People make it seem like its some special class of waitlisted people who are nearly in but just need to show intrest. That may be the case, you may be one of the ones on the borderline. But not because you are called "acceptable range". Thats just their word for watlist. bottom line is that you dont know so send updates ect anyway. but just wanted to make that clear.

yup, I was just saying it helps if you have them so don't be afraid to use them.

but I did get a specific email from a first year asking me if I wanted her to use her one special recommendation on me. and I am very good friends with a certain someone who got in that very way, samoa, you may remember him 😉

In fact, the girl who hosted me wrote a letter and personally gave it to Dean Pisano the day after I interviewed...

She's gonna follow up on it again after break...Those tulane students are amazingly nice people.

But the LOI's are also overrated...i sent loi's, updates, med courses grades (from ym masters) and nothing happened. Tulane was my top choice last year and they even told me there is no reason I shouldn't be in....I even flew down to meet with the Dean who thought I should be on of the 1st summer acceptances (i met with him april 30th)...nope...stayed in the acceptance range all summer....
