Anyone considering applying this year? I'm currently on 4 wait lists and a post-interview hold and the program looks intriguing.

Do you know if students can apply to medical schools during the program 0r do they have to wait for completion?

I submitted mine a few weeks ago. As far as I know you are allowed to apply to medical schools during the program.

You can most definitely apply to medical schools during your ACP year. I chose to only apply to Tulane and I believe most people in my cohort did the same. One applied to her home state institution and was subsequently accepted there, and chose to attend due to lower tuition costs.

I'm graduating from Tulane SOM in three weeks, and I have to say that attending ACP and later matriculating into the medical school was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable decisions of my life. While not without it's shortcomings, Tulane is a great school in a city that can't be beat.

Aside from that, ACP students historically have done well in medical school. In this year's match, we had two go into ortho, 4 EM, 3 ophtho, 1 anesthesia and 1 rad onc. We also get to know the faculty well (as TAs) and some have held leadership positions.

I recall wishing I had gotten off the waitlist and being envious of the T1s with whom I took Gross Anatomy during the Fall of my ACP year. I didn't want to be in limbo for another year but in retrospect, I would have done it exactly the same way it happened. It was an extra year, but it was more than worth it.

Good luck to all those applying, and feel free to ask any questions you may have. I'll do my best to respond promptly.

Sounds like an awesome program! How heavy is the course load? If I was to do the program and apply to med schools I'd probably only apply to those I interviewed at this year + Tulane, but was wondering how much time I'd have available to attend interviews.

The course load is definitely doable. It changed this past year, so perhaps one of the more recent ACP graduates will chime in but essentially you will take anatomy with the T1s (what Tulane calls MS1 students) which starts in early August and goes through mid-October or November (again, not sure how the curriculum has changed). It's intense, and you need to surpass the T1 class average in order to be considered but every year, most if not all of the students are able to do so.

After anatomy, there is histology and you can optionally take Neuroscience in the Spring. I would recommend taking it, because you've essentially completed half of the T1 courseload before matriculating. In other words, ACPers who go on to matriculate at Tulane basically split up the first year into two parts. Of course, you have to be a TA during your T1 year, but that part isn't nearly as time consuming or challenging as taking the courses the first time.

It might be hard to go on more than a few interviews but you'll have your schedule in early August and can plan accordingly. Tulane interviews usually occur toward the end of the interview season, so you don't need to worry about that part.

Thanks for sharing your experience. How easy is it to find research and volunteer opportunities during the program? Does it cost anything extra to add on histology and neuroscience?

I am a little confused as to what we write our personal statement for the school on, can anyone give me some guidance?

For those that have participated in the program--

Is it an automatic acceptance to tulane if you perform better than the m1 students in the courses? I'm concerned about paying 13,000 plus rent only to not matriculate the following year. Can anyone ease my concerns?

During Gross Anatomy, you should be focusing on doing well in that course. There are some research opportunities within Tulane, and plenty of volunteering all over the city, but that can wait. Your number one job is to beat the T1 average and get along with your classmates.

I wrote my personal statement about why I wanted to do medicine, and how ACP would be a unique opportunity to help accomplish that goal. I think you could take your statement in a lot of different directions, but like all personal statements, it should be genuine.

No, there is no guaranteed acceptance. Not to sound like a jerk, but nothing in the trying-to-get-into-med-school game is guaranteed. That being said, virtually every student who surpasses the T1 mean will be accepted. Those who are not usually have some other "red flag" i.e. missed required meetings, didn't work well with other students, annoyed the administration. It's exceedingly rare, but it has happened.

Basically, if you want to be admitted to TUSOM from ACP, you have to be above the average and be a team player. You're expected to be a teaching assistant the next year, so this makes sense.

Good luck!

Can anyone who applied to med school the same year as the program clarify something for me? Admission decisions come out the second week of June, but since we'd want to finish secondaries before the program starts I was planning to submit my AMCAS June 1st. Did those of you who were accepted wait until this later date to send in your AMCAS with ACP courses listed as future coursework? I'm uncertain what to do since I have no idea if I'll be accepted and will be attending a different masters program if not.

I'm in the same situation. If we don't hear back by the time AMCAS opens up, I think I'm going to submit anyway. For me, an early application is a priority.

Do any previous ACPers have an opinion on this? I cannot decide if it would be better to submit right away or wait a couple weeks to have my primary accurately reflect which program I'll be attending in the fall.

So apparently the committee will be meeting on June 9th. I'm in the same boat as other applicants on whether I should wait to submit AMCAS until I know post-bacc programs for sure. Any other thoughts?

A current Tulane student who attended ACP messaged me and suggested submitting your AMCAS as early as possible. They weren't accepted into the program until July and just updated other schools that their postbac plans had changed from what was written on AMCAS. That's the route I'll be going as well. I think early app should take priority.

It sucks that they notify us so late. I got accepted to a medical internship a few weeks back and they told me I had a few days to decide. I said yes, of course, because I can't count on other things working out. So if I do get accepted to this program, I'll most likely have to decline.

Nope... I hope we hear something tomorrow....

Congrats ! I think In former years all acceptances came out in one day and waitlists and rejections followed. Guess I didn't get in :/

+1 as well. Congrats to @minic10316 ! Do you think you will attend?

It's not over yet- theres still hope for the waitlist and there seems to be good movement on it in years past

Do you mean waitlists/rejections came the following day or later on the day of the acceptances. Just wondering so i can decide if i should stop stalking my inbox all day lol

Thank you! But darn, I was really hoping to come on here and find a slew of good news for everyone!! That's a bummer if decisions come out on different days. Maybe they're just taking the time to type the individual letters...

I'm currently on three waitlists for medical schools (one of which is actually Tulane), so if I hear back from one of those, I will definitely be doing that instead. If not, I'm pretty sure this is my plan for next year.

I do think there should be good movement for the waitlist, since everyone who is accepted could easily be poached by an acceptance to medical school!

I just received an alternate list email. Does anybody have an idea of how many people make the alternate list?

I was placed on the alternate list this morning as well. In past threads, people have stated that they are top 5/top 15/whatever... are they given that info in the alternate list letter?

I got the alternate list email 20 minutes ago. No mention of rank. Says "This is not a ranked alternate list, but a pool of acceptable candidates from which the committee may subsequently choose."

Also says they have called at least 8-12 students from the alt list in the past couple years.

I'm also on the alternate list but my letter said the it wasn't ranked....did it say that in yours too? I thought in previous years alternates were told where they were on the list - maybe they are doing things different this year

Edit: nevermind - just seeing the post above me. We all got the same letter

Shannon told me 21 people are on the wait list , and I'm sorry to hear that Eugene !

Great - thanks for letting us know! It makes me feel a little more optimistic now that i know the waitlist isnt too huge

It is still pretty large. A waitlist of like 10 would have been nice 🙂

They generally accept 8-12 every year OFF the waitlist. Shannon said one year they called everyone on the waitlist and still did not fill the class so they needed to make sure they have enough waitlisters. That being said, everyone the waitlist has >50% chance of getting in 😛

The way I'm thinking about it.... So far I'm the only one that's posted that I've been accepted. That means that the other people that they accepted aren't stalking this thread like the rest of us, which to me means they could have received an acceptance since the time they applied. Therefore, I'm thinking a lot of waitlist movement is coming up!!!

If your reasoning is right, which I
Hope it is, I better get accepted within the next week or I will have to decline 🙁

This will be so difficult to do as it's pretty much a guarenteed acceptance, but I've already committed to something else that has me planning to move halfway across the USA

Well, if it helps to know, I was given a deadline of June 17th to respond...

Haha alternatively the other people who were accepted just don't stalk SDN like the rest of us! It is encouraging to hear the definite number on the waitlist, thank you to whoever asked.

Here's hoping for lots of med school acceptances to help set off a lovely chain reaction and secure us all spots in either med school or ACP this year!

Congrats minic. Good to hear that waitlist is moving too. Im on the waitlist for the ACP and the med school.

@minic10316 maybe I got your spot. I was accepted off the ACP waitlist this morning!! I could not be happier to be moving to New Orleans at the end of July! Good luck to everyone else on the waitlist, there's definitely hope!

Congratulations!!!! You probably did - I just confirmed with them last night that I wasn't doing the program. That's awesome!! Looking forward to seeing you there. You should try to join the FB group to start searching for roommates... https://www.facebook.com/groups/TulaneSoM2018/

Hope to see more movement soon for everyone else too!
