International (Canadian) applicant here.

Hey guys... I was wondering if any recent graduates of the program have info on what has been going on? I can find info for anything on 2007-2009 but not anything after that.

I heard somewhere that Dr. Grisbaum is no longer affiliated with the program? I'm not sure if this is true because I tried searching for threads about it but I can't seem to find them.

Also, does anyone know more about the research opportunities? I'm kind of interested in doing a thesis and would like to know how possible that is because I did not do one in undergrad.

If I do end up going... it would be pre-dental so i've heard that it hasn't been a problem before but that was due to Dr. Grisbaum's help!

P.S. I have seen posts where it says $20k per year but isn't it 17k per semester? Meaning... almost 40k? I just dont know if it's worth it as of now. If i could do a thesis and have a PHD as a backup option that would make it a bit more worth the money.

Im in a very similar position as you (Canadian, also pre-dent) Im going to apply to this program but nervous about the costs and how helpful it will be. lets see if we can get recent graduates or current students to chime in about it with the some details.

Hello fellow canadian!

I ended up e-maling dr. grisbaum and he told me there is a new director this year so here is her reply to my question with regards to research for pre-dents. Hope it's useful 🙂

Thank you for your message regarding our One Year Master's program. As
he mentioned, Dr. Grisbaum is no longer co-director of the program, but
very little has changed regarding program specifics other than that. We
do have a limited number of research positions that are available to
students entering the program, regardless of their track (i.e.
pre-dental, pre-medical etc). The research component will not produce a
thesis: we require only 50 hours per semester, so this is not a
research-intensive course, but is more designed to give people an
opportunity to participate in something that may be otherwise lacking
from their transcript. That said, most of our students do spend
significantly more than 50 hours in the lab if they choose the research
option, and a few have been lucky enough (and worked hard enough) to be
included as co-authors in papers coming from their host lab.

This year we have some connections with the LSU Dental School, which is
situated in New Orleans. There are several research laboratories in
which it might be possible to find a research position, so it may be
possible to find something directly related to dentistry. Rotations at
the Dental School do require you to have your own transport, however.
Otherwise, there are several basic research laboratories within the
Tulane campus that take undergraduate researchers.

Hey!! I'm an Applicant to Tulane's One Year Cell Master's Program for fall 2011. I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything yet?

Thanks!!

I can't speak for CMB program, but I received my acceptance from the Tulane pharmacology program in mid April. Good luck!

Hey!! I'm an Applicant to Tulane's One Year Cell Master's Program for fall 2011. I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything yet?

Thanks!!

I just received an email from Marnie Mercado saying that they are looking over completed applications, and will continue to do so next week.

Does anyone want to give their input/feedback about this program? Just haven't heard alot about it compared to the other forums...

Thanks. The CMB program seems to be on its own schedule. I don't think they informed last year's applicants of their acceptance until June 15th.

When did you apply?

Anyone have any opinions of the pros and cons of Tulane Masters in Cell Biology vs Drexel IMS program for getting into med school.
Thanks

This may not be stated in the application materials, but I've heard from pretty solid sources that the new minimum MCAT average to be accepted to the Tulane School of Medicine from one of the backdoor, er, SMP-type programs (Pharmacology, Cell&Molec, Genetics, ACP) is going to be a 31.

If your MCAT score is sub-31 and you dread retaking it, I would not recommend one of the Tulane programs. The flip side is that IMS is awful (I would know, I did both).

Aweful in what way? and might the Tulane program still be useful for going to another med school?

does anyone know what the average mcat score and gpa was for last year's class?

^^^This is true...been through the pharmacology program myself....and i must say was the best decision i ever made in my life.

I applied to this program since FEBRUARY! I have not been able to get a hold of anyone, especially Marnie Mercado who is supposed to be the contact. She keeps emailing my about missing transcripts and GRE scores then finds them after I send her another copy. It seems disorganized and scary at the same time. Its so FRUSTRATING that I do not know how they keep my file and I cannot reach anyone.
Also, I have applied so long ago and still not a word! I don't even know if they are reviewing my file yet. What if the class fills up?? someone please help me on how to go about this, I am on my wits end.

It will be nice to also get more information from past participants, and help with the decision making. Any success stories for tulane cell and molecular biol? and if yes, what were your experiences and stats?

Anyone heard back?

Finally, which one is better? CMB or the Human genetics program?

I just got an e-mail from Marnie Mercado earlier notifying me my application is complete 🙂 Good luck everyone.

Has anyone been contacted by the program with a yea or nea answer? It is rather late in the year to be toying with people's lives.

does anyone know if federal financial aid is available for this program? Or are you supposed to finance it with private loans?

federal loans should be available, but probably not federal grants. did you get in? has anyone heard anything from the program?

Hey guys,
I did the Tulane CMB program during the 2009-2010 school year. I had Dr. Grisbaum as my director so I don't know how it has changed since Dr. Inglis became director, hopefully not too much, but if you have any questions about New Orleans or the program I'll do my best to answer them.

For previous questions:
1. Tuition: It's a discounted tuition of around $11K/semester vs. the 20+K for regular tuition.
2. You are eligible for financial aid.

Also, the program has a website that has many of the answers you are looking for, especially in the FAQ section. http://tulane.edu/sse/cmb/ms.cfm

Hope this helps!

Thanks Bdvz. Good luck to you as well. Hope to hear something soon.

i got an e-mail from marnie saying the committee recommended my application for acceptance but it has to be approved by the dean first. good luck everyone.

hey DancinSarah, did you by any chance hear back from the Tulane ACP?

Nope, haven't heard anything since my app was marked complete 🙁

Congrats Sarah on both this and your other admissions 🙂

Anyone else heard from Marnie about acceptance to the CMB program?

Congrats Sarah on both this and your other admissions 🙂

Thanks! I am withdrawing from Tulane to attend something more suitable for my situation. good luck everyone this is a great program 🙂

Hi guys has anyone heard anything from Marnie? Any notifications of acceptance, rejections or waitlist? I have called and sent her e-mails numerous times but Still no word.

Nothing on my end.

That lady is SOOO slow with responding. I am still waiting to hear back,

but if i do get in - should i prefer this over a MABS at MIDWESTERN or UMNDJ or NYU Oral bio?

Does your requests for information being ignored say anything about the program itself??

Anyone got any info on the Tulane Human Genetics program? As far as I can tell, its pretty similar to the CMB but different curriculum.

Any info is appreciated, just can't find much about this specific program. Thanks

Got my email today....waitlisted but based on my position on the waitlist I think I still have a good chance of getting in.
Actually, I pleasantly surprised to even be considered.

Hey Everyone,

Got in and chose tulane over georgetown and drexel because of the masters degree and the price. I was wondering does anyone know if there is a facebook group to meet people also attending? If not does anyone know where is a good place to live? Also im very open to a roommate(s) if your interested let me know.

Thanks and good luck to anyone on the waitlist

I received an email from Marnie a couple of days ago stating I was waitlisted also. If you don't mind revealing, what number are you on the waitlist? I'm 55...haha

I am number 50. Anyone know when those accepted need to make decision by?

I had to decide by july 1st and had to let them know if i needed an extension (which i think was a week). Also I know Marnie Mercado is out of town this week so dont expect to hear anything from her until the 12th.

good luck

Stats are 3.29 cgpa, 32Q mcat

As a dental student with
3.2 gpa and 20 on the DAT

what would be my best bet for getting into dental school this upcoming cycle

this program (CMB) or Midwestern AZ MAMBS or NYU oral bio?

Accepted today!!!!!! So excited!! :soexcited:

Also, where are people living?!?!

^Congrats! Would you mind sharing your stats please?

cGPA: 3.73
sGPA: 3.63
MCAT: 24Q (low I know, applying DO schools)

300+ hours hospital experiences, university student government, mission trip to costa rica, pre-med club leadership...etc.

^Thank you. I will probably need a SMP after I graduate university, and Tulane CMB is my top choice right now.

I wonder why this thread is so dead? Maybe because the Tulane CMB program has such a small class size?
