I totally need this info too, because I am bringing my mom and we will be hanging out for a few days...any suggestions? Something close, not too expensive, and relatively safe 😉

I stayed at the Ramada across the street from Tulane. It was cheap (I don't remember exactly how much, but I think $40-ish for a night). It wasn't the Marriott or anything, but it was good enough. And it had TV. 🙂 Recommendation: bring something to eat for breakfast because you'll have to be at Tulane really early, with morning interviews, and the school only provides lunch.

The Ramada sounds like a good plan-- cheap and quick n dirty to get to the school. My dad came down with me (He was like "You're going to interview in New Orleans?!? Ahem... I better come with you... you know, to make sure it's safe") so he footed the bill for a hotel called the Provencial, in the French Quarter near Jackson Square. It was really nice-- had a courtyard with fountain, not highrise, truly provencial feel. The doors were not soundproof, though, so if someone walked by noisily in the middle of the night, you could hear it. I'd say stick to the Ramada, and don't try to get too fancy, you may sacrifice your comfort. Also-- stay for a few extra days to scope the city and eat the food, and let your interviewers know you are doing so with enthusiasm.
