A couple questions to those current students in the program:
1. How is it living in New Orleans?
2. What is the diversity like in the program?
3. Geographically, are most of the students from the south-east united states? I'd be coming in from Oregon...
4. Have there ever been students with 3.0uGPA do well in this program and then make it to med school?

Thank you so much! I appreciate it!
Hey Sharpie let me see if I can help you.
1) I enjoy New Orleans and if you look hard enough fair prices on rent isn't hard to find. You will never find better food or culture anywhere. Tulane is also great to their students.
2)diversity? Racial diversity? Well our program is mostly white dudes, but we do have a few middle eastern/ Indian peep. Short on blacks and Hispanics. Geographic diversity? Peeps be from all over the world. West coast and east coast are well reped here and a few from the mid west. Gender diversity? great blend of men and women Age Diversity ? Most peeps are about 23 to 24 but there are a few older guys in the programs.
3) There are plenty of people from the west coast.
4) Undergrad grades for most people are above 3.0 but everybody is doing very well here. The support in this program is the best.

Any other questions I will do my best to help you with

How does being OOS factor in after Tulane's SMP? I'm on the Mississippi coast, not too far from NOLA. I know LSU-NO is almost only LA residents, would they count me as in state because I would be in NOLA for one year?

No. I actually just had my application for in-state status denied at LSU, after spending 19 continuous months in LA. The primary reason was that the time spent here for the sole purpose of education does not count towards the 1 year minimum needed to establish a domicile.

Hey fresh did you work in LA while you were in the program? I was told by LSU that time spent employed counts even if you were in school as long as you have a paper trail that shows that yes you ( and spouse if you have one) have been or will be employed in LA for one year prior to the start of classes.

That's interesting. No, I only started working in April (and graduated in May); I've been working full time since, so I qualify in 3 more months.

Keep in mind that I applied with WA listed on my AMCAS, though, so I had that working against me as well.

The LSU website does state that you have to put LA as your home state on Amcas in order to be even review for in state status. You can use your tax documents as proof of residence and they expect you to cut all in state ties with any other state. I am will to bet if you had put LA as your home state and address your work history would have been enough to get you that in state thumbs up.
Out of curiosity,Did you get into LSUNO?

Do you think a part time job at a hospital or something would be manageable in order to get in-state classification?

Do you think a part time job at a hospital or something would be manageable in order to get in-state classification?

Yes but here is the thing, LSU wants to see you prove your desire to stay beyond school. You have to cut all your instate ties to your former state and you have to appear to hold that job for up to one year beyond school at Tulane. You can not change your primary address to an out of state location and all government documents must reflect that Louisiana is your home state for at least a year. You can't just go home after Tulane is over you have to continue to stay and work here. Basically you can't fake it you will actually have to be in the state an additional year after the pharmacology program with a job.

I saw that you're from Clinton MS. Are you in the process of going to LSU?

Oh, and one more thing. Would it be more beneficial to just go to LSU-BR and get a regular masters? I know grad assistants make a stipend and pay taxes on it. Time wise it would be about the same, correct?

No you are not understanding what I am saying. Employment must be maintained for one whole entire year in the state of Louisiana while you hold a domicile for one year. Post any program you will not be seen as in state even if you have worked the whole time but the LSU system will count your time as in state if you continue employment beyond your educational time table. For example if you work as a med scribe during tulanes pharma program and continue to work as a med scribe while living in New Orleans but get fired or have a gap in your employment the LSU system will see you as a resident if you intend to continue working and living in the state. Do you understand that it is more about what you do after school than what you do during school?

Okay, gotcha. Is there any reason why you aren't trying to get into UMMC?

I interview there in a week and a half. I will probably be appealing to the registrar in a few months (if I get in) - the in state rate is too low compared to the other schools I've gotten in to to not at least try.

I say give it a shot but not putting Louisiana as home is the reason they axed you on the in state thing

Hi All,
I'm planning to apply to the Tulane one year masters program in pharmacology.
I'm a bit confused by the application process. Can I use the same letters of rec for medical schools or should i ask for new ones that are tailored for this program? Do the recommenders send directly the letters or should i collect them and send everything in a big envelope like it says on the website? Also for the essay, can i use the med school personal statement? I'm sorry if these questions sound dumb, i just am genuinely confused!
Thanks for the help

Yes you can use the same letters but ones that directly address the program do read better. Get yourself a letter service like interfolio and have your letter writers up load their letters there then you can send it to where they need to go in one batch. No write a new ps that is just about the pharm program.

Hey everyone. I know this is an old thread but if you could provide me with feedback, I would greatly appreciate it! I am currently a Postbac in Drexel's MSP program and am applying to Tulane for 2015 entry. How did you feel about the program? How was the community within your program? Was it cutthroat? How were your classes? Pros? Cons? Were you supported in your application process to medical school?

For the application, how did you respond to the "why Tulane" question? In other words, how long was your response and what do you think I should pinpoint?

A little about me: I graduated with a BA in psychology and a cGPA of 3.5. I have six years of healthcare experience and an extensive resume/ECs. I will be finishing my certificate here in May. I did poorly on the GRE with a score of 298 and I will be taking the new MCAT in May. I want to have my application complete right after this semester is done, mostly because I am taking pharm now and am doing great. What are my chances?

Thank you!

Do you want to know your chances of getting into tulanes master of pharmacology or the med school? The pharm program you are a shoe in but for the med school can't tell without an mcat. The pharm program is good and it so far has helped me however it has been a slow season hearing back from md schools and I got no love from tulanes med school.

Yes, I would like to know my chances of getting into Tulanes pharm. If you don't mind sharing with me, what did you focus on in your statement?

Well I didn't apply to the pharm program, I actually apply to the Anatomy/ physiology program. I was waitlisted for that one and was told I should roll my app over to the pharm and genetics programs and was accepted into the pharm program. Now don't get me wrong Tulane is a great program but it isn't very often that Tulane accepts into its med school from its pharm class. There are stronger programs out there with stronger linkage you are also going to need a strong MCAT score and the pharm program isn't the best with that. Some thing to think about

I was reading the Tulane Anatomy Certification website and it states,

"Students in the MS program take anatomy, histology and neuroscience courses alongside first year medical students at Tulane Medical School. All other graduate courses are taught within the School of Medicine by full time Medical School faculty."

So, does this mean if you complete the program and get accepted to Tulane, you have to retake these exact same medical school classes once you are officially in med school?

Nope credit transfers to their med school you don't have to retake

I was a little surprised to hear about this Tulane program, because almost no one at LSU talks about it (to my knowledge). This actually looks like it would be something right up my alley, and it's not too far from home to boot. 3.38 cGPA, 3.13 sGPA, and 26 MCAT with solid ECs (going to retake before applying to medical school since this is a problem that needs to be fixed, but will likely do that toward the end of the SMP). Already rejected from one of my IS schools (pre-interview) and haven't even heard from another.

Word on the street is that their minimum MCAT is 27, but the website hints at this being helpful to your application instead of a hard-and-fast requirement with all <27 scorers getting rejected. Since I'm sitting right at 26, would they even look at my app, or would they just trash it? Would I have a chance at acceptance into this program, and would it be a good choice for me (indeed, I don't want to make an expensive mistake and take this just to end up doing poorly)?

I'll email to ask about the MCAT score being a true minimum requirement or not and report back, I just figured someone out there might have some incredibly useful anecdotal evidence that an admissions office would never provide.

There were people in my class that never took the MCAT and all most everybody with a score under 27. A few 22s and quite a few 25s. You have a good shot. Roll the dice.

Thanks for the fast and helpful reply! I think I'm going to go ahead and apply, as this program looks like it would be good for me. The most unsettling thing is the lack of guarantee of acceptance into med school, so I still have some soul searching to do, but I'm glad to hear that my app won't just be tossed in a trash heap.

Hi All,

I am deeply considering Tulane's Micro/Immuno and/or Pharmacology program. From what I hear, Tulane is quite a competitive school. I'm wondering if I'd be a relatively competitive applicant based off of my credentials. Can some one give me a critique?

cGPA: 3.49
sGPA: 3.32
GRE: Verbal (156) Quant (154)
2 years of research experience (one great letter of rec. with that and a two descent letters)
Plenty of extracurricular, leadership, mentoring (trained 2 new Ugrad researchers) , teaching (as a lab Ta for one semester).

If you can share your credentials, that would be great as well.

I got into both programs this year. I had 3.7 sci GPA 3.79 overall GPA 31 MCAT. I applied early. I didn't spend more than 30 mins on the application either

Hi I'm really considering one of these programs because I really want to attend Tulane medical tho I don't know if it'd be worth it I have a 3.83c/s and 32 MCAT haven't applied yet but essentially I'm asking is this a good way to get accepted to tulane med specifically ?

I think I'm going. I think the program is what you make it. Srry if that's not the answer you were looking for

The Tulane ACP seems to have better linkage than Tulane Pharm although not directly stated. You need to be on the WL for a US MD school in order to apply.

Nice man enjoy , I read a bit on it and it said they help improve your MCAT do you know how they propose to do that?
Probably through the classes you take and what not. I talk with a student in their program and he just got his score. 13/12/12

I'm interested in getting an MS in pharm and being immersed in the med school. I have a buddy who got into the genetics masters so if med school doesn't work out maybe we can start up a pharmacogenomics company

Yeah the price isn't fun , a And in no way do I have that kind of money but Tulane statistically reports happiest med students every year, that counts for something when your from mass and the state school is so competitive that most of your options are that expensive 🙁

Actively considering it now! I may see how the cycle goes but it's the only program of this kind I would ever consider, sounds awesome!

With your stats it will be helpful. It is also a great program and gives you a boost when entering medical school.

Do you know if they help with MCAT because tulane a avg is currently above mine and I hear they put great emphasis on mcat

When I was in the program I was told that only a score of 33 or higher will help. Of course the two people in my program that got in did so with a 30 and a 32. Your MCAT score is great and to retake is high risk , low reward and not worth your time and money. Keep in mind there average is just that an average they take people above and below that score all the time. Also keep in mind this program does multiple thing for you. With your strong stats if you do well it proves you are a safe choice to every medical school. It gives you a chance to prove you know and love New Orleans and this is very important to Tulane. It gives be you a chance to serve the city which is also helpful. For a person in your position you stand to gain a lot. Also keep in mind LSUNO will also take notice. Keep that MCaT and roll the dice while you are in the program. Don't apply EDP to anything.

Great advice, really helpful, thank you! that's exactly what I'm trying to do. I just want them to know they're my #1 and hopefully show them that NO is where I want to be. Are you referring to MS pharmacology or ACP ?

Pharmacology. The ACP is even better. Dr. kadowitz at Tulane always says the best med school is the one that accepts you. Tulane knows it's your number one when you show up for orientation. No one has a top choice until they have a choice first. Make sure you apply broadly.

Hey All,

I recently received the brochure about this program after being rejected by their medical school. I just wanted to know what you think about my chances of receiving acceptance to the program with these stats:
Getting a Bachelors of Science in Biology
Minors: Chemistry, Psychology and Art
cGPA: 3.47
sGPA: 3.20
MCAT: 29
I've held multiple and consistent leadership positions throughout undergrad, 2 years of research in Biology, mentoring research students, working 2 jobs, and gone on a medical mission trip.

Thanks!
