haversian,
did you get a call from dr. beckman? morning or afternoon. also, did she give you any input as to how this waitlist thing was working out? i was told by my advisor that july 15th is date to send out AMCAS if nothing is heard from tulane, but that waitlists around the country would really start moving at the end of the month once financial aid packets come out.
I personally am not quite sure yet if i'm better off knowing that the waitlist isnt' moving or that it is....

good luck to all and congrats to haversian! persistence paid off.

I hope it's not to uncouth for me to post here, but I just got accepted off the waitlist. I sent a letter every week for ten weeks. Hope that helps someone.

What did you put in your letters for 10 weeks?

I'm going to document every time I go to the bathroom and mail it to them.

this board has been eerily quiet.

anybody with recent seizure-inducing good news?

oh yeah,
just wondering, but has anyone been able to speak with dr. beckman or dr. kahn directly since having been put on the waitlist? my only contact has been the secretary and i've always been curious as to how much she knows about this ridiculous process.

yep, just the secretary.

i know people thatve gotten all the way up the ladder and talked to adcom people and deans of other schools and even gotten interviews that way.

i dunno what these people say but i know for a fact that theyve gotten in because of persistance and the ability to talk to people that actually matter AFTER the interview process.

I'm stuck in the middle of the desert and I can see Tulane in the far-off distance holding two gallons of water. Vultures are beginning to circle me...when do I give up?

I am wondering when to give up too. I have nothing else to really update, and I want to start planning where I am going to live and stuff. This is seeming really late in the game now :scared:

I never spoke with the secretary until I got in and wanted to see if my check got there. I ONLY spoke with Dr. Beckman before then. I was told on my interview that the ADCOM meets with her, they make a recommendation, but it is DR. BECKMAN who has the final say on anything. I had a great interview with her so I kept in touch with her after via email. It might be late in the game, but from what I have experienced, she seems to be running the show, which isn't bad because she is an incredible lady and is absolutely great to speak with.

Yea, I prolly will if I don't get in this time. Apparently if you re-apply after interviewing the first time they don't interview you again.

What does that mean? Does that mean if you re-apply that you will never get to the interview stage (i.e. you will be rejected?) Or does that mean if you re-apply & reach the point where you would normally receive an interview they will just use your interview comments/scores from the previous interview?

I believe it means they'll just use your last interview score. This is good for reapplicants who were waitlisted.

i dunno man...i bombed with my first interview guy. i was nervous as hell since it was my first intervew ever. the second guy seemed to love me as did the student (although the student doesnt carry much weight in the app process so i hear).

can i elect to retake the interview? haha.

if you're still on the waitlist you're already acceptable. Although it is a great excuse to head back down to New Orleans.

has anyone else gotten in so far?? i keep sending update letters but im running out of things to say except that i may not be eligable for med school in a few weeks beucase i might become clincally INSANE from all the waiting. :meanie:

haha. i was in nahlins for a total of about 20 hours. flew in at night. had a RAGING headache for some reason...probably high blood pressure from worrying...was starving but instead of hitting up some REAL food in the french quarter over some good music and beer, i went down the street to SUBWAY. SUBWAY!

thats probably why they didnt let me in, i didnt try the gumbo.

really though, is the general opinion that waitlisters have good interviews but those that get acceptances outright have better gpa's/mcats/essays ???

cooome ooon tulane. gimme a call, we'll chat.

so i just got off a counseling call with Dr. Beckman regarding my app and what i need to do to improve my credentials to reapply.

first, whoever that said that she's a really 'cool' person was right. She was really laid back the entire phone conversation and also direct. She said that my app was not the problem, i guess meaning that my gpa and mcats are competitive enough for an acceptance. She did say that my interviews were "So-So" (implying that that's the reason im not getting in from the waitlist). My first intervewer stated that he didn't see the real me and that i was trying too hard while the 2nd interviewer said that i was good and the student interviewer said that i should be accepted. So that averages to OK and not good enough to get in.

From the general feeling, it appears that i will stay on the waitlist, to my disappointment, even though i havent been rejected off it (which is also weird since she made it seem that my SO-SO-ness wasnt good enough). I asked about reapps and interviews and she stated that only really good interviews dont get repeated, and that mine would if i past the 2ndaries. i.e., in reapps, only those who didnt get in the first time but had great interviews dont do redos (in response to the post where somebody said that all waitlisters dont do redo interviews and that scores are simply reused).

hope this helps as it is SOME sort of update for us. here's to reapplying and getting a 2nd chance at Tulane. if both the administration and students are so laid back in such a competitive atmosphere, how can we lose?

looks like ill be in georgetown for a year doing me some SMP. peace out.

eddaman,
thanks a lot, that was a really helpful post.
quick question: did you think your interviews went really well??
i'm in a similar situation, waiting for tulane to call, and beginning to think about reapplication and maybe i was wrong to think that my interviews had gone very well.
also, how did you go about calling dr. beckman? i was under the impression that the secretary blocked her from us like a O-lineman does a star QB.

Hi

Good luck to you. Do you mind posting or pm'ing me your stats? I am applying to Tulane this year and was wondering if it is even worth it. I would really appreciate it. 🙂

i KNEW my first interview didnt go well. my first thought when the "25 minutes" were up was, "holy crap i didnt even start talking about ME yet..." and here i go hearing about how he said that he didnt get to know the real me. I really really shouldve steered the conversation away from credentials and towards ME but wasnt confident enough to do so since he seemingly kept asking about my academic background. it honestly was totally my fault. i felt i made up for it with my second interviewer and the student interview was great. both he and i are interested in CV surgery and we wouldnt shut up about it the entire time.

background wise: 3.4 in civil engineering at Cal, 32R on the mcat. did a lot of 'varied' things like volunteering at ucsf, vp of my frat, honor society, emt training, tutor, cpr instructor, med assistant, shadowing cardiologist, etc...

oh yeah, dr. beckman noted that there was a note saying that i seemed to try to impress them without really showing me instead. i think that's the problem with my old personal statements too. I've tried a lot of different things to get a healthy dose of experience while satisfying my interests in medicine and teaching/helping people but never really EXPLAINED it.

so if i could give one word of advice to MYSELF and others struggling to get in...it's this: dont sound like a flashy prick, sound like YOU (easygoing and natural). and if you happen to be a flashy prick, ur screwed.

rock on.

oh yeah, i called the usual number and asked the secretary if i could setup a couseling call regarding my old application so i could improve my credentials in my reapp. she directed me to a second lady that set up the actual 'appt.' i called yesterday before lunch (cali time) and was scheduled for today at 9am (cali time, 11am nola time). if dr. beckman now gets a flood of calls and finds out im the cause, imma have to whoop some ass.

guess i wont be mardi gras-ing til next year,

come on nocal, you have got to have some better than that right? Isn't your standard come back up there something about blasting us in socal for stealing your water, or how we have smog, or .... blah, blah, blah.

Socal still owns you guys no matter how big that lame Nor-Cal sticker is in your back window. (Hey, the bright side of it is, you're still in California at least, right?)

how bout, "our schools are smarter than your schoools. sucka."

Wow, Eddaman, after hearing you stats & that you are on waitlist I am truly depressed. 🙁 +pity+ Guess I better get my butt in gear working on my 2006 app.

my stats are very similar to eddaman's, and i thought i had a good interview cuz my first interviewer even took me and my mom around town to see it...but seeing that i am still on the waitlist, i guess that doesn't mean anything 🙁

haha, holy crap. my first guy just stared at me and, totally unlike my personality, i just froze (i think i was speaking the entire time though, about what, i dont know).

i hate how one gets nervous about stupid stuff like that and SCRRREEEWS up.

im sure at this point, im the one messin me up, not my numbers and ecs. for those with comparable stats, just dont sound like a friggin robot like i do on paper.

I emailed Dean Beckman asking about the waitlist movement, and she emailed me back saying that there's only about 1 withdrawal every other week. I guess only like 2 more people are going to get off at this rate... 🙁

hey, any of you applying for the ACP this year as an alternative? great program.

yeah, i actually called their office and spoke with Shannon Dawsey...she informed me that I was on, yet another, waitlist for the ACP...im starting to get really tired from all these waitlists...i need an acceptance!

I believe it's the Anatomy Certification Program, where you can take first year med school courses with the T-1s and become a med student second year (granted you have to do well and pass)? (This is off the top of my head, so correct me if I'm wrong)

I withdrew last week. A tough decision, but I got pulled from the waitlist at my top choice. Hopefully, one of you will hear the good news soon. Good luck!

this question really sucks, but are any of ya'll that are still on the waitlist going to include Tulane right now if you are resubmitting AMCAS? i'm debating whether or not to add Tulane to list of schools now, or after this whole &*#$*@ waitlist ordeal is over in a few weeks.
aargh.

You could also apply to Tulane early decision...Dean Beckman was suggesting I do that if I don't get in this round.

yeah, Early Decision is an option but i'm a little skeptical about it.
if you do apply ED, you really need to know that you have an excellent shot at getting it, ie, the Dean pretty much should tell you so.
Because if you don't get it, you find out in october, and then you have to rush out all your other applications to other schools, you're extremely late in the process, and you risk getting screwed for another year. this process has a lot to do with timing of the apps, and while ED is a good option, if you don't get in, your timing for everything else is messed up. i don't know. i think i'm just gonna become an astronaut or something....

no ED for me. im all about having options. even if i know what i want to do...

Someone else on the Tulane Class of 2009 thread said that they got a rejection letter recently too. I didn't get one today, but now I'm really scared to check the mail for the rest of the week.

It definitely would be nice to know what kind of 1-10 ranking they give you.

congratulations

you know, i'm not quite sure how people were getting to talk to dr. beckman.
i called the office last week to ask about ED deadlines for '06.
i asked if i could speak to dr. beckman, and the secretary told me that we still weren't allowed to talk to her, but that we could email her with any questions we had.
she said that she would basically tell people the same thing at this point though: waitlist is moving very very slowly, they are still accepting people and they will be until the first day of class, and unfortunately, they know how inconvenient this is, but that is just the system. she was very friendly.
anyways, i decided not to email dr. beckman b/c honestly, at this point, i have absolutely nothing to say to them that they don't know.
i sent in a last update letter a little while ago, they obviously know i'm interested, so now, finally, i feel that it is completely out of my hands.
if there is a male of my ethnicity from my state of residence who happens to give up his acceptance, then i think i have a good shot of getting the call. other than that, it's time to work on amcas 06. and i'm sure that all of us still on the waitlist right now, will have a very very good shot of getting in to TUSM in the fall.
good luck to the rest of ya'll. just 3 more weeks and it's over and we can move on.

Nope...and I will probably find an apt by this weekend, so in that case, it will pretty much be game over for me. 🙁

sittin in my apt in dc waiting for the masters prog to start. no tulane for me this year either. maybe next year! ive already completed the 2ndary. HOPEFULLY i get an interview soon and dont screw the 2nd chance up.

good luck people. keep ur head up. as long as ur making progress, ur time is not wasted.

Can anyone provide a definitive meaning for this:

Reapplicants who were previously interviewed are not usually reinterviewed unless the Committee considers a second interview a necessity.

Does this mean they overlook you unless they want to reconsider your file or does it mean that they will just use the score from your last interview and save you the money it costs to fly down to nola?
