I am a current MD applicant to many US schools, including Tulane (where I was accepted)...however I interviewed there before Hurricane Katrina...

I was wondering what the general consensus was on the state of their medical school and the student atmosphere for med students in the city of New Orleans. Also...has Tulane Med drastically lowered its requirements for acceptance due to the crisis...and what's more, how will the class of 2010 stack up against previous Tulane classes, and those from schools around the country?

Anyone who is a current Tulane med student, accepted to the 2010 med class, has interviewed post Katrina, or who has ANY INSIGHT into the matter would be vey helpful. Thanks.

According to something I read from Tulane, the standards for next years class will not be lowered. Nonetheless, I think the hurricane most likely hurt their applicant pool. I initially applied at the end of August, but after the hurricane I didnt send in my secondary because I wasnt sure that the school would recover by Fall 2006. Then, I received an email in December encouraging me to send in my secondary and assuring me that the class of 2010 will proceed as planned. There were a lot of other people in the CC of the email... many from Harvard and other Ivy schools. I quickly sent off my references and secondary application. I would imagine that there are many people in my situation that applied just prior to the hurricane but never ended up sending in their secondary. If the schools represented in that email I got were any indication, it seems like the people from the upper echelon schools opted not to submit their secondary.

I just called Tulane a few days ago because I had not heard anything from them since I submitted my secondary the first week of December. They said " will be notified if an interview decision is reached".

Did anyone else submit in December and already get an interview… or are they being slow?

Oh, by the way...
You interviewed a long time ago. Were you accepted or have you not heard?

I'm a Tulane first year student. I also went to undergrad at Tulane. We actually just had a meeting with the deans today where they told us that the stats for the class of 2010 are the same as for previous years. The average MCAT scores have stayed the same, and they seemed very optimistic.

I personally can't wait to get back to New Orleans. The city is fantastic and the students are wonderful. You won't find a more relaxed student body or live in a city with more soul. We really have fun. After being at Baylor this year, I'm even more thankful that I go to Tulane. Medical school is stressful, but at Tulane most of the students are quite laid back and really wonderful people to be around. I've had more fun this year (and gone to better parties!!!) than I ever did in undergrad.

I think that if you are in the class of 2010, I wouldn't worry about the hospital situation. In 2 years when you finally start your clinical rotations, everything will be reestablished in the city. I personally fully expect that my clinical rotations will be fine in a year.

Anyway, PM me if you have any more questions. But don't expect a speedy response b/c i have 3 tests next week!

I am in the same boat as you, however I interviewed at Tulane in December at Baylor. Talking with the Deans and the students reminded me just why I applied to Tulane. I went there for undergrad and it was the greatest experience I think anyone could ever have, and talking to the Med Students they seem to feel the same way about Tulane Med.

On the topic of academics, the Deans and my interviewers were very encouraging about the state the school will be in by this summer. They have a brand new building they were planning to open in the fall anyway that suffered very minor damage. And as for hospitals, they have partnered with many of the area hospitals in the mean time while Tulane and Charity get repairs.

My main concern is the state of the city, and if you feel the same way I suggest you do the same thing I am going to do and go visit as soon as you get the chance. Talk to Dr. Beckman, she said that if you do come down there they would be happy to show you around the school if you didn't get a chance to see it.
