i'm in a bad situation. since i started med school, i've been pretty set on EM. so my schedule this year is all set up for EM. i now think, however, that i want to do something else (anesthesia). my problem is that i won't be able to do my sub-i until october.

so, i was wondering what i should do about my ERAS. i've heard that turning in your ERAS on sept 1 is the best way to ensure that you get the most interviews. if this is the case, should i just write a personal statement about why i want to do anesthesia? or would programs not take the personal statement seriously because i haven't done the rotation yet? should i just wait until after i do my anesethesia rotation (late oct) and turn in my ERAS then? would that be too late?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I dunno. My transcript submitted to ERAs will only show my third year rotations (up to June), thus my two anesthesia electives, June and August wouldnt show anyways. I really dont think it matters. Just let them know why you are applying for anesthesia.

Do not wait until late October to submit your ERAS unless you want to choose from the leftover interview slots (from programs that even have slots left). Write your personal statement for anesthesiology and apply on time. If you are uncertain or uncomfortable, apply to both ED and anesthesiology and if you make the decision against one or the other you can cancel interviews accordingly. By the time you interview you will have rotated through anesthesia and will be able to talk about your experience with interviewers. If you can change your schedule to rotate in gas earlier, all the better.

If you were that sure about ER to set up your schedule for ER (and not set up Anesthesiology as a backup), what makes you confident that you want to do anesthesiology?

Answer: You are not sure about anything right now (let alone anesthesiology).

Since you are stuck. Find a way out. Most people focus only on the "door".

My advice: If the door is closed, climb through the window, or break the glass and sneak in.

What this means is find a way. This could be doing an away rotation in Gas at another school (not all Anesthesiology rotations are "full"), or do an Anesthesiology rotation as a rural rotation. Or if nothing works, just shadow an anesthesiologist for two weeks at your local instiution at night (or every free time you can get) to get a LOR. If you truly want anesthesiology, not being able to sign up for a rotation WILL NOT stop you. You will find a way to make it work.

Lastly, turn your application in early. Secretaries look over you application and give out interviews based on numbers. Your motivation for Anesthesiology will not be examined until interviews.
