The title says it all, what do I say to a medical school if I have decided to go somewhere else. Should I do it through e -mail or send a letter? I know there was a thread about this matter and someone wrote a format but I can't find it when I searched for this topic. Thanks a lot and good luck for everyone who hasn't made a decision.

if you have accepted the spot already, then you should call plus an email/letter. if you just received the acceptance, then you can just put it on the reply form and say no right there.

it's quite a nice feeling to be honest! fortunate, too.

Key elements of this note include:

Thank you for the opportunity.

I've decided to pursue another option.

Please remove my name from your class roster and refund my deposit.

Thank you.

why the formalities? you can't just call them up and say, please take me off the list?

oh wait, and kill all the lawyers, too, I expect? 😉
I'm not the lawerly type, but I have a few in my family. When in doubt, get it/do it in writing, Pelvic.

Most schools ask you to submit it writing with a signature if you don't want their acceptance or even a waitlist spot. then when money's involved they definitely want a signature.

You know it.
I like your icon, what's happening there, Wendy?

Here is my letter. Feel free to use it.

Dear Admissions Committee:

After careful review of your credentials, I regret to inform you that University of xxx School of Medicine will receive no further consideration for my attendance for Fall 2005.

This year, I faced a most difficult task in deciding which of the many highly qualified acceptances is best suited for the next step of my professional career. It is evident, indeed, that many competent schools will be unable to gain my attendence to their institutions this year.

Although you may be disappointed, my personal wish for you is that you find other "qualified" applicants to fill your 2005 entering class. Thank you for your patience throughout this process and PLEASE REFUND my deposit as soon as possible. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Sdnstud

Nice, I definitely like it. But you know what, some rude schools really don't even deserve a well thought out letter. Maybe a quick email, with no message and "suck a fattie and gimme my money back" in the the subject line. This should suffice.

When I made my decision I called all the schools I was accepted at and schools I still had interviews at... all of them but two. Don't know how I missed them, but they both ended up calling me on the days I was supposed to be there for my interviews, saying "uhhh.... where are you?" Pretty embarassing.

I said it before. Here is a device some lawyers 😱 use.
Call them on the phone...I agree, you don't have to be impersonal.

AFTER you call them, write them a letter/email something like this:

Dear _____,
This email is to commemorate/memorialize (pick one, same idea) the phone conversation we had today in which you said: ________.

(Then say whatever you feel is necessary.)

Hope that helps. 🙂

Picture of your a$$ (preferably hairy) with the words "No" and "Thanks" scrawled across your left and right buttock, respectively.

You should say, "After further and closer review of your school, its faculty, facilities, and student body, I have decided not to attend your school. There are approx. (# of applicants applying to that school) applicants this year, making it a very competitive school. Despite this, I have received numerous acceptances to schools of much higher caliber, and so it is always a difficult decision in choosing which school meets my minimum requirements and standards, of which your school just falls short. Good luck in your school's future endeavors!"
