TUSPM Food Expenses

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Food is really not a problem at all. There are so many options to handle this predicament.

1) Find a friend who is driving everyone to the grocery store. If you cant find a friend, it is common to bike or take a taxi.

2) Some students use food delivery services where you submit a food order and it get delivered to you. I think the minimum at most places are $50-75, which isnt that much.

3) Chinatown has plenty of fresh meat/fish/produce stores. Also there is Reading Terminal Market a few blocks away.

The dorms have plenty of closet space so it's easy to stock up on food once final exams roll around.

Shoprite delivers for a fee of 16 bucks extra which you can easily split with someone. The Reading Terminal Market has a lot of stuff too, which is only a few blocks away (mainly produce, but also sauces and spices, deli meat, bread, etc etc). Kmart and Walgreens are good for milk, cereal, frozen dinners, etc, but Walgreens is more expensive because it's a drug store. I've had no problem cooking almost every night during my first year. Some nights before exams I've eaten something quick, but there's definitely time to cook most nights.

So would you say a car is a good thing to have while attending Temple?

can i also recommend that you find an apartment because the dorms are a dump. I never lived in them but I have been in them and for that money you can get a nice place with a roommate, join your facebook class page and announce that your looking for a roommate.
As for food, dont worry about food.
and congrats!

I know people that walk regularly to superfresh and wholefoods (which are right nxt to each other and about a mile away) and carry stuff home in backpacks or carts with rollers. I cooked frequently 1st year buying meat and groceries from reading terminal which is only a few blocks from the pod campus. There's also lots of cheaper foods from Chinatown markets. Wawa is still open on 11th and arch, which is open 24/7.. saved my life several times

To add, i often times cooked 4-5 days worth of food when I had a down evening. Soups, chillis, chicken breasts, rice, spaghetti, etc. could be made in large quanities and then eaten over the course of a week.

I don't think it necessarily saved me money but it did give me more time to procrastinate/put off studying

If you have a car and a place to leave it, like with family, I would do that at first. Then if you decide you really want or need it you can always bring it up later. Especially if you are concerned with saving money, you can save what you would pay for car insurance and registration depending on where it's registered.

Food situation can get a bit tricky sometimes, but there are the local hangouts such as SUBWAY. Food delivery is great and the fee is only $7 for a huge shipment. Many students go out to lunch, however some cook and bring their own lunch. I wouldn't worry about the food situation here in Philly. There are so many restaurants and fast food that you don't have to cook if you don't want to. Shopping for food is not simplistic, but it's not bad at all. I'd recommend not having a car and using the money for eating at restaurants, or transportation. A car in philly is a hassle.
