I've received mixed suggestions from upperclassmen as to whether I should do UWORLD/USMLERx in tutor mode or timed mode. Is there a general consensus on SD?

DISCLAIMER: I don't take my Step 1 until July, but...

I think it all depends on where you are in your preparation. If you're still several months out (like me), then I think it behooves you to do your blocks in tutor mode so that you can fully absorb each question stem, answer choice, and explanation. This is where you make the connections between what you learned in class, FA, or wherever and the way the NBME will expect you to apply it.

Conversely, if you're in your dedicated study period and only have a few weeks left to study, I'd recommend doing your blocks timed, random. This way, you'll be simulating actual testing conditions during each block and getting a feel for timing, pace, etc.

Maybe some of the M3's and M4's can chime in, but this is the approach I'm taking. Good luck!

I really think it boils down to individual preference.

I did my qbanks (Kaplan, UWorld) in untimed tutor mode. Once you buy UWorld, read the very front screen of the qbank. They suggest to use the qbank as a learning tool, not merely an assessment tool. That was my main motivation for doing it in tutor mode. I also think that taking Step 1 is just as much about your basic science knowledge as it is decoding each question you encounter and figuring out how you think about each question. I also like the instant feedback when doing them on tutor mode.

I used the NBMEs (bought in timed mode) as an assessment of my knowledge and as a way to evaluate my time management.

It worked out well.

How many NBMEs are there and which ones do you recommend doing? I know theres 2 for sure since all I here people talking about is NBME 7 and 11. Also, where do you purchase them from and do you get to see the correct answers?

Thanks
