Tutor/Teacher

I tutor Bio, Chem, O Chem and physics at the community college here. I was recruited but all you really have to do is go in and apply, take a proficiency test and then you got it. There is generally always a need for tutors at the collegiate level. I get paid ~11.00 hr no matter if I am tutoring or not. I hope this helps.

For those of you who tutor/teach middle/high school students about chem/bio/etc. How did you get the job, and what degrees are required??

I have tutored kids from kindergarten through high school in reading, math, English, writing, Spanish, bio, chem, some SAT, and organizational skills (haha, that is evidently a "subject"). I went on to Craig's List and looked under "Education" in my area. There are a zillion companies out there that are always looking for tutors. Most ads will state their requirements, but most of the ones I've seen prefer a college degree with experience in teaching/tutoring. Just contact them and send them your resume if they ask. Tutoring's fun 🙂 Good luck!!

i'm a private tutor for an 8th grader; i found the job on my school's website. as mentioned before, Craig's List is a good resource too.

tutoring is great! flexible hours, good pay, and it can be challenging and fun 🙂

i'm teaching 5 AP courses to high schoolers... 3 AP Chem, 2 AP Physics. I'm teaching in Florida, so what i say is pertaining to FL but may pertain to other states....

I have a degree in Biochem (which is considered chemistry by the state)...so that alone qualifies me to teach w/in the field of chemistry, and i need to take a physics qualifying exam sometime in the spring to get my certification for that subject.

The certification exams seem very simple, so one shouldn't have an issue getting certified if you study some.

You don't need an education degree, just a degree. A science degree will be most helpful since it usually clepts you out of taking a qualifying exam.

Good luck, it is probably one of the best ways to spend the yr off between college and dental school. It looks awesome on your application, and gives you something interesting to talk about when the infamous, "how have you been spending your year off?" question arises.

jb!
