Hey guys, so for my school I plan on tutoring in the fall. Unfortunately, I do get paid so I cannot use it as volunteering hours 😛

I will be tutoring a general chemistry 2 course, do you think this is worth my time? I'm doing it to boost my resume but I'm wondering if med schools will care since Id be tutoring a general chem 2 class.

All in all, do you think this would be worth my time because I don't know how med schools view tutoring. Thanks

Teaching is generally viewed as a positive by med school adcomms. This category includes TA, tutor, mentoring, and coaching.

Awesome thanks for your opinion. Judt wanted to make sure it was worth it since I'd be putting in like 20 hours a week on top of classes

On the application, you can label this experience as tutoring/teaching, so there is a place for this. I tutored at my school as well.

I just got hired as a tutor.
I told them I can start at 14 hours a week, making sure it doesnt affect my class studying. But they can use me up to 20 weekly.
I need the income.

How should I stay organized as a tutor? Should I keep a file on each student with notes on weekly progress etc?

A tutor that teaches classes as well told me that half of the students will just be asking me to do their homework and to tell them I can't.

I start on Tuesday.

That depends on how the tutoring is organized. Are you doing something one-on-one with a student or will there be multiple students at a time? Is it on a longitudinal or on-demand basis? Keeping a file on each student is a bit of an overkill unless you only have one or two students over the whole semester. Most of the time, the students will be coming to you on an as-needed basis and you'll just need to work through the problem with them. And then you might never see them again. Leave the measuring student progress to the instructor and TAs.

Never flat out give a student an answer or do the work for them. Always ask them questions to guide them towards the right path in solving the problem. Your job is not to help them get to the end of that problem set or even to do well on the exam. Your job is to guide them in discovering the right problem-solving mindset/skills that they can use to independently complete future problem sets and exams successfully.
