Hi guys. To make a long story short I've received two academic dishonesty violations over the past two semesters at the University of Georgia. The first one was for minor plagiarism on a French oral presentation and the second one was for unauthorized assistance (using my Iphone) during my final exam of my biotechnology lab final which just ended. Neither of these classes are related to my microbio major. I accepted both the sanctions. According to UGA policy if you receive two academic dishonesty violations the student has to get a permanent dishonesty transcript notation and meet with a board that assigns either a suspension, dismissal, or expulsion. I'm praying I won't get expelled. If I do get suspended or dismissed, do I still have any shot at making it into a Caribbean medical school or a DO school. Also if I'm expelled would it possible to go to medical school in India or anywhere else like Europe/abroad. Thanks for the insight. My current GPA is a 3.42 overall and 3.2 bcpm and I got a 28 on the MCAT.

You either a troll or just have terrible ethics. In either case, medicine may not be the best career for you in the eyes of many admissions committees (and many SDN users).

You have demonstrated on two separate occasions questionable moral character. After the first one, you should have understood the inappropriate nature of academic dishonesty and the repercussions that can result from such action. Now that you stand in front of a committee, it is likely they will take all of this information into consideration and come to a decision, which likely will more severe than expulsion (at least if you were in front of my committee). Having sat on one of these student conduct boards before, I can say that there is always one "hard ass" who will lay it down on you hard.

I don't know about the Caribbean school process, but I would think they would like to see your academic record to ensure there aren't any incidents such as the ones you have listed. Regardless, good luck to you in the future in all of your endeavours.

Well, you maybe able to answer this yourself. Write out how you plan on explaining it to a med school, and have someone who has not heard the situation before, and perferably does not know you, read it. Get their honest opinion.

Honestly it hurts your chances, but whining or passing the blame will kill them all together. Be honest, and explain what you learned from the situtation, and even more importantly, DONT DO IT AGAIN!

If they say no then say subtly to a woman invigilator you need to change your pad (make sure you're not on your period that day, thats a bit gross). Earlier on, you will have written down notes on a sanitary pad, and put this one on. If you need more notes then write them on a new pad and wrap it back up. When in the bathroom (if it's a real exam the invigilator will problems escort you)look at the pad you have on and quickly memorize it. Then change it, put it in the bin, and replace it with the pad that has more notes. Memorizes them quickly and then come out of the toilet as if nothing is wrong. Go back to the exam and scribble down the answers.
2. Hide the answers in your bra. During the test, fiddle with your shirt and look down to see the answers or notes. No teacher will dare call you out!

There are probably few, if any, SDN users who have experience similar to your situation - 2 academic violations on record AND succeeded in matriculating into medical school - and thus can't provide any meaningful advice. You should probably talk to admissions staff on the schools you're interested in to see if it can be overcome or if there is at least a precedent for it.

Then there's always the "wear a short skirt method" in which you write the answers in the inside of your thigh. You look down on it periodically and read them, and if the instructor asks you what you're doing, you can play the "why are you looking in between my skirt" card.

I unfortunately know some not very intelligent people who have tried this and done it successfully.

If I were a student on an admissions committee I would raise hell and resign from the committee before somebody like this gets accepted.

Getting caught once and learning from it is one thing and possibly redeemable, but cheating again after that reveals some fatal character flaws that no amount of explaining will cover up.

Remember that despite being low tier, Caribbean and foreign med schools have standards too. When you're dealing with patients, you work as a team and you need to know that you can absolutely trust everyone. Those with a tendency towards academic dishonesty have no place on such a team.

Its over. Look somewhere else for a career.

even if you were admitted to a medical school abroad, you would probably have to immigrate there to practice for the duration of your career as well. your record will be reviewed again and again in the future for things such as residency applications and licensing. i don't think it is practical to be optimistic you will be able to wait this record out.

With 2 successive honor violations not even a semester apart, not to mention the fact that they are so recent as well, I don't think you'll have a shot at either MD or DO schools in the US.

Honestly, I don't think you'd stand a chance at even the better carribean schools, like Ross or St. George's, although I am not sure. Frankly speaking, if you can't get into one of the better foreign medical schools (by better I mean higher US residency placement rates), and your plan is to one day practice in the US, then I would recommend pursuing a different path - medicine might not be an option for you anymore.

I think you are jumping the gun with this question...

an EXPULSION from university means that you cannot be accepted to any other university until that is lifted, which means that you will not get a Bachelor degree, which means you will never even be ELIGIBLE for applying.

I'm not even sure about this. Caribbean med schools, even though they are money hungry, are unlikely to accept a person will not succeed because it makes them look bad. They usually cater to honest people who made mistakes and want a second chance.

The OP, having cheated twice would possibly try to cheat again in med school, putting him even more in the hole. Even one incidence of cheating in med school is usually game over forever.

I also question the OP's ability to get licenced or find a residency even if he could find some med school to take him in. Each of these steps along the process involves a question about academic dishonesty and a rapid rejection if something like that turns up in the record.

Basically the only way this could work is if you went abroad and never came back to the US. I'm not even sure what country would have such low standards that they wouldn't check your undergrad transcript. Indian and European med schools will check for sure so they're out. Med schools in 3rd world countries like Nigeria and Philippines are usually quite competitive for even their own citizens and I doubt a foreigner with your credentials would have a chance.

Afghanastan is probably your best bet.

Like I said, I'm dubious that the OP would be able to come back either. But their STEP1 pass rate and match rates are already low; one more either way isn't going to affect them that much. Not sure if he could get into SGU or somewhere like that, but I'm sure he could get into somewhere--at the end of the day, they are for-profit schools.

Naturally, it's not a course I would recommend, but just answering his question.

I earned all my other grades and regarding the two classes in question, I wasn't even trying to cheat I just made some extremely unintelligent choices. I am not a horrible person, but I've made some bad mistakes lately and I am willing to own up to them. All I want is an opportunity but I guess even the chances of that are bleak as of now.

Sorry you got sh***ed on but people call it how they see it here. You had to be prepared for this when you originally posted. We've all made mistakes, but some have more serious consequences. There are plenty of other careers out there that you need to consider. Your future in medicine looks bleak to me.

I know I'm new to this whole forum thing, but I think this is more common sense than anything. All you really need to do is look at yourself through the adcom's eyes. Even though a 3.2 GPA isn't stellar, the fact that you have been caught twice says many things: You don't learn from mistakes, you've probably cheated several times in the past to obtain your 3.2 GPA, you have poor morals/values, and ....(could go on all day ). No matter how you twist this, I really don't think any school would invest their time on an applicant who has proven their character to be dishonest. By no means am I saying you have NO shot at an MD school, I'm just saying that if I were on the board, I wouldn't consider you even if you had 100 purple hearts pinned to your chest.

I would start off by retaking and dominating the MCAT. A great MCAT score might be enough for a Caribbean school to consider you.

Given that you've been a member for ~1.5 years, you must have known what you were getting yourself into when you created this topic.

Regardless of the judgement others have seen fit to pass down on you, the underlying statement is the same - your chances now are probably about one in a million. Whatever the circumstances surrounding the incidents, in your initial post you indicated that you accepted both sanctions, which is an admission of guilt; an admissions committee won't need to look beyond that. Even if you did find a school that is known to forgive academic dishonesty, I doubt they would forgive so quickly considering the offenses were committed so recently.

In terms of acceptance / practicing abroad, as somebody already said, you most likely won't find good advice on this forum simply because it is territory that 99.9% of us are unfamiliar with and have no experience. If you want real answers to your questions you will probably have the best luck by going straight to the source and speaking directly with an official from a foreign school.

I know you're probably joking here, but law would not be a real option either. Every state's board of bar examiners does a background check on every applicant before taking the exam. Someone with this record would not be eligible to even sit for the exam in my opinion.

In all seriousness in regard to your potential to get accepted, there is practically no chance of getting a US MD or DO school. You can roll the dice and try getting accepted to a Caribbean school but you must also go into it realizing your chances of getting a residency or liscenced are slim and that you may come out of the process ~200k in debt with nothing to show for it.

Your only real chance I think is applying to an undergrad in some foreign country and starting over there by redoing your bachelor's from scratch and never mentioning that you went to school in the US. Then, try to gain residency in that country and go to MD school there and practice there for your career.

I had a friend who cheated on an exam and ended up getting an A in the class after an extraordinary performance on the exam. I ended up performing average and getting a B+ in the class. That cheater really was on track for a C because he would have bombed that final.

The truth is medical school is hard, if you actually cheated in order to get through undergrad you are highly unlikely to even have a chance of passing.

On the other hand, if you didn't cheat and just made lots of stupid decisions in your life maybe you will be able to pass medical school if you do get in. But on the other hand, lots of students that get into Caribbean med schools tend to drop out and build up extensive amounts of debt.

So, don't bother if you are actually a cheater. If your not, give it a chance and see what happens.

Agreed. There is a very good reason that society cracks down so hard on cheaters and shows them no mercy. All of us who take the high road have made great sacrifices to get to where we are. We have taken that B when we knew that an A was within our grasp with just an extra sheet of paper in our pockets. We have all worked on through personal and family problems. We have all experienced going to sleep crying from having to work so hard. It only gets tougher in medical school.

Feel lucky that you were corrected on your dishonesty in the safety of academia. In medical practice you could be fired and sued. If done in front of a jury, you would go to jail.
