I think it'd be better to contact the admission office of each school and tell them about your situation. Perhaps they can accommodate you or make specific suggestions.


You can include the publication in an update letter, but you will have to ask each admissions office if they are receptive to update letters (if it's not listed on their website of course). There are different templates online, and I don't know which one is most appropriate. : /

I doubt your travel plans are anything they will want to work around. Most likely if they were highly interested in you (which means they might work around your schedule a bit) they would have already talked with you.

I could be wrong, and not saying this to try and be rude, just being realistic.

What is the best way to use an update letter to inform them of long past accomplishments (ie this pub was in 2010)? How do I phrase "I didn't write this on my AMCAS but I should have?"

Nah. Just write it like a regular update letter.
"My name is blah blah, I am an applicant of blah blah, I am writing to update you about blah blah..."

You'll find different templates online, but I can't tell you which one is the most appropriate because I'm not sure... but for sure it has to be in PDF format. : O

Hey all,

I'm applying this year and have two related questions.

The first is that I will be out of the country for several months starting mid-January. I am wondering if I should email schools letting them know that, in hopes that they offer an interview beforehand. The twist is that I previously sent out ITA emails to these same schools when I was interviewing in the same city.

Secondly, for some idiotic reason I never mentioned a publication from several years ago on my AMCAS or secondaries. (How) should I go about updating schools on this information? It was a non-science publication, and nothing particularly impressive, but does show that I wasn't just screwing around before I applied to med school.

If this is a poem or something of such minute nature, I would not update. If it is a manuscript published in a peer-reviewed journal, then I'm more inclined to say yes.

There is no harm in letting them know. If you do get interview invites then make sure you schedule them for a different month. Sometimes you have a choice. If not then you would need to travel back.
