Does anyone know if it is possible to be a family physician and also do something else like work in the ER. I am very interested in Primary Care, but also would like to do something else. Any insight?

Nowadays, there are FPs, IMs, Peds & even GPs who have their own private practice, but also work a couple of hours in the ER as well. You don't have to be solely an ER doc to work in the ER! You will get more opportunities if you are BC/BE in both fields, but if you are not the opportunities are definitely still out there!

check out the combined IM/ER and PEDS/ER programs, there are several of these around the country. I beleive that you sit for both boards if you graduate from one of these programs. Anybody know of people who have done these?

Good luck with the combined programs. Spots are few and far between. As for working in the ER, as of now anyone can "moonlight" in the ER, but SAEM ( Society of Academic Emergency Medicine) and ACEP (American college of Emergency Physicians) is working to get the laws changes so that only ER BE/BC physicians can work in an ER. No offence, but I hope that happens, 'cause it will just mean mo' money for me! ( I hate it when the financial side of medicine comes into things)

Agree with Detroit Rock City.

Peds/ER or IM/ER are extremely competitive perhaps because of the number of programs in the country(ACGME wise).

My dear friend from Tulane obtain one of these spots and had a 99% on USMLE I.

Can't say anything about osteopathic, but I assume it's easier.
