Hey guys!

First off, congrats to those that got accepted to TWU for Fall of 2011. I am one of you and will be attending at the Houston campus in August. Like many of you, I have quite a few questions and I wanted to create a thread for those who know they will be attending.

MY biggest question has to do with housing...so current/new TWU students, where do you live? Looking for roommates?
I'm already in Houston, myself (graduating UH in May) but I have no clue where to look for an apartment..nor do I have any roommate options at the moment.

Also, what is a typical week like during a given semester? I know that the curriculum is intense but what kind of hours should us newbies be looking at for class time?

Hey, Chedt.

I'm not sure if there are any current TWU students on this thread, unfortunately. At least not regularly... It's mostly new students that just got in.

Are you in one of the housing at UH right now? There's that TMC tower apartments of whatever. I forgot what they were called. You could try that? Maybe? I'm staying with my parents *cough*. I decided it would be better since I would be mostly broke during PT school. But there are a lot of cheap apartments around the med center.

Check the TWU-Houston website:

http://twu.edu/downloads/student-life-houston/Short-Term_Housing.pdf

And yeah. Finding a reliable roommate can be a task...

What's your major at UH? Looks like we'll be seeing each other at the commencement (if you're in the same college) and at TWU this Fall.

Hey Goyo..

Relatively small world..I'd be exercise science too. Wouldn't be surprised if we're in any of the same classes. Nice to meet you, nonetheless.

I wish I could stay with my pops...unfortunately, he lives out in Alief which is a little too much of a drive for me everyday. Plus, I wouldn't say it's the greatest study environment. I currently live at the Calhoun Lofts here at UH...wayyyy too expensive for me. I've been working all my college life and it seems as though that may have to end once I start @ TWU. Needless to say, I'm hoping for one hell of a financial aid/scholarship package. Lol.

Ha, you got that right.

I'm working right now, too. I even worked two jobs in my first and the first half of my second year. And that's not going to realy work out once I start either...I'm also hoping for a big fin aid/scholarship help. I probably need to go hunting again soon...

Well, good luck finding something. I actually need to finish a lab report for my ex. testing class...

If you have submitted the survey back to Mary Beth then you should be getting an email excel sheet that has everyone's name and email also whether they are also looking for a roommate. I suggest emailing the people looking for roommates and setting something up that way.

Hey Chedt,

First, congrats on getting into TWU! It's located just 25 minutes away from where I live, and I hope I can go there once I'm done with my prerequisites.

Here's an excellent website from Rice University:

Off Campus Housing - Rice University

Many of my friends use it when finding apartments here in Houston. You don't have to be a rice university student to use the website, and many of the apartments are located close to the medical center.

The best places to live in Houston IMO are around the med center, Meyerland area, and around mid-town. Houston is a very big city where most people commute via cars, so make sure you set up transportation before you move. You don't want to get stuck living far away from the grocery store, or other places that are important to you, especially school. I practically live in my car getting to places in Houston, so location location location is very important! Hope this helps! 🙂

Chedt,

Congratulations on TWU, I have also just been accepted for the Fall under the OT masters program. I also have many questions as you do. I have constantly emailed the staff but they haven't been very helpful. What degree are you seeking at TWU?

If you find out more information as to what a normal week looks like at TWU let me know 🙂

Hey Tancab,

chedt and I are entering the DPT program at TWU Houston. I'm not sure how the OT program runs, but at the Open House that was on April 16, the current DPT described the typical day at the DPT program. Apparently, we'll be living there at school, too... Class starts at 8am then can run until 4-5pm. Then it's study/practice on other people time for 2-3 hours. Then go home, and study more, since the building closes at 9pm. You're basically there the whole week, M-F. Your weekends, depending on what the next week will cover, may be "free" or more study/assignments/group projects, esp when tests are coming up. However, everyday is different and you can't really anticipate when you'll leave school.

I don't know if that helped, but that's what they told us. Again, this is for the DPT program, so I don't know what's going to go on with the OT program! But, congratulations on being accepted!

What type of questions did you ask the staff? I'm sure I had the same questions.

Congratulations to all of you.

My one piece of housing advice is to live close enough to the Medical Center to ride a bike to school. Saved me infinite hassle! Not to mention parking fees...
