Question- if someone does a transitional year after not matching a PGY2 position in another field, how easy/hard/impossible is it to arrange the TY similar to an EM1 year and then jump into a EM2 year afterward? Are there PGY2 EM vacancies like this available in most places or very hard to come by?

Your post was somewhat confusing. At exactly what point are you in your training and what is your situation?

123 programs will generally not give you a whole year's credit for your transitional. I don't know about 1234 programs, but I think you'd hav more leeway there. 234 programs will allow you to jump right into their programs since a transitional year of some sort is required before starting. How hard are the openings to come by depends on the particular year. There are usually IIRC a few PGY2 openings in 123 programs in the country, but usually only take people in transition from other EM programs. They may be persuaded to make an exception.

Your best bet would probably be trying to match into a 234 program if I read your post correctly.

One of the problems you may run into with the 234 programs is that applications are usually not for the upcoming year, but for the following year. If I apply to a 234 this year and get accepted, my residency with them would start in 2006. If you're in the middle of your transitional year right now, you would basically have to check around for 234 programs that have an opening for the upcoming year due to someone dropping out during their transitional year, I believe.

for those of you applying to 234 EM programs and transitional/prelim years, what LORs did you use for transitional/prelim? is it okay to use the SLORs for these programs? I have the SLORs, but from waht I understand they are just the SLOR and then a paragraph at the end about you. Do I need to get separate LORs?
