type of research for top residency programs

I'm a M1 and unsure of what kind of research to get into. I hear that doing top-notch basic sciences research (with publication) will be more high yield than doing clinical research, especially with respect to getting into more competitive residency programs. At this point, I don't have any preferences. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!
