As a military dentist (new graduate), do you get a lot of experience with all kinds of procedures or do you mainly get amalgams/fillings? I am just curious how well prepared for opening a practice one would be after having been a military dentist for a few years.

Hello,

That varies tremendously based on where you are located. Some places have a higher requirement for amalgams, while others do not. You should be afforded time to do additional procedures, such as crown/bridge, oral surgery, etc.

In any instance, you will be much quicker overall with your dental skills when you leave the military and better prepared for private practice than just coming out of school. This is especially true if you do a one year AEGD.
