Hi, I'm interested in IM and probably pursuing a fellowship. I would like to know what is a day like for an IM resident. Do you round on patients all day and prescribe meds, or are there procedures to be performed?

It's all program dependent. The typical day for me on General in-patient IM does not include a lot of procdures as we are on the general floors. But the IM residents who are in the unit do get lots of lines, intubations, a few chest tubes, and -centesis. And if you want procedures, while being on call is a great time to get them.

If you want more specifics about a certain program, or area to obtain suggestions about what programs to look into, feel free to ask.

5:00 -- get in and print progress note templates
5 - 6 -- Fill in vitals and the labs that are back, fill in a skelleton plan by issue
6 - 6:15 -- go by MAR's and fill in meds
6:15 - 7 -- go see pts
7 - 8 -- Get nightfloat patients, try to learn about them, get final labs and adjust plans on old patients (very hectic)
8 - 11 Attending rounds, get notes in charts and enter orders.
11-12 AM report
12 - 12:30 madly try to get some work done before...
12:30 to 1:30 noon conference
1:30 - ??? Get more work done and admit new patients and discharge old patients
Long call -- leave around MN to 2 am
Short call -- leave around 9 or 10 depending on # of admits and active pts
Precall -- leave around 7

Occasionally the "work" involves culturing a wound, doing a thoracentesis, placing a ppd...
