I was thinking of applying for a job next summer as a Kaplan instructor. I know it must vary a bit, but what is a rough minimum score to be considered for the job?

Thanks!

I think as a minimum, they require a 90% cut off

What do you get paid for being an instructor? I got a 36Q, and if I could get a job doing MCAT teaching with that it would beat my normal summer job. =\

In Canada, I think you get paid about $20/ hour for inclass time, with additional money (but less) for preparation for class.

Keep in mind that while you may make more money on a per hour basis at Kaplan than at your regular job, you will almost certainly not log as many teaching hours. One- because they won't give you that many hours. And two- because teaching is exhausting and you won't want to teach that much.
Also, they do give you money for prep, but they cap your prep time at three hours for a three hour lesson (which is NOT nearly enough time to prep a lesson), and the prep rate is essentially nothing (7 bucks an hour?).
So... yes Kaplan is a decent part time job, but you can't make that much money doing it unless you have super-human amounts of energy and work at a center with many available classes.

Wow, that is unreal. Where can I apply? LOL

Most instructors have scores in the mid-thirties. You generally need to have scored an 11 in any section that you want to teach. If you've scored that high in some sections and not others, you can just teach those sections. Actually it seems like most instructors specialize rather than teach everything, although there are some of us who do teach the entire course.

I'd second what Schaden said. It's really not worth your while to teach the classes if you're only going to do them once because you do not get completely compensated for your prep time the first time through. Eventually, you wind up coming out ahead though after you've taught them multiple times. 🙂

Hey QofQuimica,

What's Kaplan's policy for teaching on your own (e.g. personal tutor) while you're teaching for them, or teaching for another prep company at the same time?

I imagine the latter would be more frowned upon than the former, but I still want to know...😛

I want to teach for a prep company, but I don't want to go through all the trouble of applying et. al. if I find out I don't like how they teach (as I myself have not taken a course at any of them).

When you get hired by Kaplan you sign a non-compete agreement (NCA), which essentially forbids you to teach for a competitor or to offer your own teaching/tutoring services. I'm not sure for how long the NCA remains in effect after you leave Kaplan, but my guess is 6 months to a year.

11 in VR, 12+ in BS and PS.

They can make exceptions for VR being 10, but not 9. I teach BS and PS...wont let me teach VR (i got a 9)...but I still help the class out 😉
