Lived in Buffalo for awhile which is where this info is coming from.
Depending on where you are from (speaking as a born and bread northeaster) buffalo gets a bad rap for its weather. Usually every 4-5 years there's a bad winter that gets headlines but for the most part yes its cold, yes they get snow, but it usually melts withina day or two because of the close proximity to the lake. (most of the snow here is lake-effect and sometimes doesn't even hit the whole city) The summers are beautiful and people utilize them with the lake, the pier, festivals - Taste of Buffalo, Allentown, Elmwood, Shakespeare in the Park, and others. Every Thursday during the summer there is a free concert which the city really utilizes calls Thursday in the Square where they get good people for to come in. July 4th down at the beach is always packed (at Mickey Rats). Enough about the weather.
Anesthesia program: Multiple hospitals with different training and settings at each. Millard Fillmore and Suburban are run by a private anesthesia group. BGH also private but different group. ECMC with a different group. Sisters yet another group, Children's yet another group and Roswell with another group. This is great because you really know what kind of practice you are looking for when you get out because you've seen some of the intracacies moreso than with just one group. Plus you really get a diverse population of patients healthwise, economically and case wise everywhere. Thus they set up your electives and months (cardiac, pediatric, obstetric, etc.) along these lines as well. Also the population of B-lo well they are not the most healthy so you get to have a lot of complicated patients due to this which makes for great training. The learning here is pretty hands on and the staff for the most part is very helpful and great to work with. (Of course there is the select attending you won't want to be paired with for the day who doesn't relieve you much at each place, but mostly everyone is very fair and works with you well.)
BGH - the cardiac center of b-lo
ECMC - a Trauma 1 center
Millard Fillmore - Neurosurg center
Children's - peds/ob
Roswell - THE cancer center of Western NY
VA - its the VA nuff said, here you have morning conferences
Suburban - the private more educated (and economically stable) population of B-lo
Most people live downtown because all these hospitals are relatively close (within 10-15 minutes drive of each other except suburban which is about 25 minutes are from these - that one is in the suburbs)
The President elect of the ASA for 2006 is Dr. Mark Lema, the chair of the department.
For the first couple months as a CA-1 you do not take any call and you have afternoon lectures which you are excused from your duties in the OR to go from what I know. (Lectures except at the VA are in the afternoon for residents)
More on Buffalo: Bars are open until 4:00am. people in this city love to drink. The key is to get off Chippewa which is the easy area to find with bars....most of the different unique places are off this area. There are 4-5 major areas with bars depending on where you are. Happy hour is huge here too. St. Patty's day is huge in this city. This city is all about the bar and football/hockey. Its a testing site for places to try out new beers as well. Restaurants amazing. The quality of food you get in this city is fantastic and they definitely know how to cook steak, burgers, wings. The price is not bad either. Most places really good food is about 20 dollars per person. If the price is over that then you are pretty much guaranteed to have be having a fantastic meal (as in at the Buffalo Chophouse - best steak in the city, or Hutch's). (If you are a vegetarian or vegan this city might not be for you.) Chicken wings started here (Anchor Bar) but Duff's makes the best in town. This city is pretty chill and laid back, very casual. People are friendly too. You definitely need a car here, but parking is easy here....you get pissed if you have to park a block away. City is about one hour from Toronto and skiing is about one hour south as well. Southwest flies direct to most places from here. Jetblue flies direct to NYC. This city is relaly big on art. They have very very good theatre here and most restuarants have things on the wall from local artists for sale, most stores have jewelry and other things from local artists as well.
Housing: Housing is cheap relative to other cities. Its fairly easy to find a place with heat included so ask about that if you decide to come here.
I loved my time in this city. The summers definitely make up for the winters which in my experience weren't that bad. People here jsut like to complain about the snow but its definitely way worse in Syracuse, NY.
If you are single and female is might be harder for you to find someone as a significant other here. If you do find someone or are serious about someone this city is so much fun to explore together.
Hope this helps.
