Is it true that they have a 70% acceptance rate from students interviewed? Most
Schools have a 33% acceptance rate from what it seems like but I guess Detriot is an exception.

This is a common source of confusion and may be an issue of semantics.

For instance, let's say last year UDM interviewed 300 people for a class size of 100. They almost certainly (as all schools do) had to send out >100 acceptances, maybe even 210. So, you get 210 acceptances sent out to fill 100 seats. So the rate of matriculation for interviewees is 33%, but the acceptance rate would be 70%.

I've thought of a similar issue in Texas, where schools only interview around 350 people maximum, but a huge number of them have interviews at multiple Texas schools. In this case I figure it's like 450 unique individuals interviewing for ~290 spots altogether, which are very good odds.

Everything can be found in doc toothaches spreadsheets or (even better) the 2013 ADEA guide to dental schools. Refer to page 34 for the total # of accepted students. As illfavor mentioned, the matriculation rate is a different statistic.

In 2012, UDM accepted 71% of OOS who interviewed.

You guys should also take into account that the numbers shown are for both pre and post december. Therefore the acceptance rate is higher for pre-december interview.

very true

Makes sense now. It's crazy to see how some schools have a 95% acceptance rate like Oregon. and how some schools like USC have an 18% acceptance rate. It would seem like a waste of time for schools like USC to interview so many students and only accept 18% of them.

Thanks for posting this information. It's nice to clear up the mystery of just how many people are accepted.

I agree. That's wierd. And an incerdible waste of time/money.

Especially given that the traditional interview may not even be that great an indicator of a student's clinical and interpersonal skills.

When I was preparing for the MMI at U Mich, I read this article. Turns out it gave little to no actual guidance on how to succeed with that particular format, but it did reference an interesting study of the reliability of traditional interviews. Here's an excerpt:
One of the ways in which researchers attempt to study personality with regards to medical students is via an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). This is a type of test that measures clinical skills and takes into account your ability to communicate and interact with patients and co-workers. In some ways an OSCE score is a proxy for personality. It's not a perfect way to assess these aspects of a person but does a reasonable job and is the preferred format to date.

A study published in 2004, showed that the personal interview was able to predict the mean performance on an OSCE at .06. To understand this more, a score of 1 would mean that for every unit increase in the interview score would result in the same unit increase on the OSCE score. A score of -1 would essentially mean the opposite or that the interview score and the OSCE score were inversely related. And a score of 0 would mean that the interview can't tell you one way or another how a student will perform. So a score of 0.06 means that the interview was little better than the toss of a coin in predicting how well an applicant would perform in clinical areas.

I tried to find the actual study, but it cost $. Obviously it looked at medical school applicants, not dental, but I suspect there is a good deal of overlap in the process.

If you're interested in the topic, here's another study.

Those are OOS numbers, in-state numbers are obviously higher so it really depends on your residency.

In-state numbers are not always higher when it comes to interviewed vs acceptance. For example, UB accepted 74% of OOS interviewees but on 64% of in-state, and temple sent offers to only 68% of in-state interviewees, whereas 74% of their OOS interviewees got an acceptance.

These numbers make me happy to have interviewed at temple and ub, but make me feel like my pitt interview isn't really worth it. Does anyone have any information on maryland?

Sometimes % accepted for OOS post interview is higher than %IS accepted post interview because the school interviews a smaller group of OOS students.

Last year for OOS, UDM interviewed 188 students and 134 students were accepted. (ADEA GUIDE 2013, pg 34). This is a 71.3% chance of getting post interview, but remember this takes into consideration pre-dec and post dec interviews.

When I was at udm for the the first round interview, the dean mentioned that they eventually accept >90% of pre-dec interviewees.

Yes, Dr. Jeffers said the same thing at my interview too. The hard part is getting an interview, after that if you can act normal and maintain a pulse during an entire day should give you good odds of getting in :naughty:
