U of M undergrad vs. Wayne State Med's Combined BS/MD program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
...everyone knows State has hotter girls.

What year of school are you? Because a real lack of perspective on the residency application process is showing on your part.

4th year, glad to hear my lack of perspective is that apparent on this lol. As I said, I'm sure people at the top of the class in Wayne can land a great residency, and looking at their past years' match list, some have awesome matches (Hopkins, NYU, Brigham), but the list is just not that impressive top to bottom.

Look, I admitted that I may have a skewed view of Michigan, because nearly everyone I knew there is either in Medical, Dental School or recently out of Law School and I-Bankers in New York. Obviously, there are plenty at the school who don't amount to jack squat....so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Whatever, I've said what I wanted to say to the OP, I'm not getting into arguments over which undergrad is better. I didn't mean to offend anyone I was just using examples to say that he wont regret going to school there...shoot me for it.

well duh, wayne isn't going to be as solid top to bottom. The average MCAT for the incoming class of 2010 was a 28. With half the students getting scores that would place people in most other states in DO school, they're probably not the types to get into Hopkins for residency. Students getting "meh" matches has a lot more to do with the quality of the student than the quality of the school.

Sorry about thinking you were a first or second year. The comment that threw me was about your friend not matching Derm. I still don't see what that has to do with Wayne in particular.

No worries. I know 2 people who graduated from Wayne 3 years ago. One only got one ortho interview (luckily he matched, but in Toledo....), and one who is in his third cycle of applying for derm.

and not in state....which may also hinder my ability to interpret a midwest rank list

Anyways, good luck in the match!

Are you accepted to this program?

Full ride, conditional admit to Wayne's med school, and you can apply out? Doesn't matter to me what you do, but if I were deciding for myself I would definitely take that option.
Not accepted yet, but I am in with a good shot. Finished my first round interviews and felt that they went well.

If I make it to the next round I have another interview before the deal is done...

Here are the things drawing me back from WSU
Campus isn't great at all
- not safe
-nothing much to do
- non medstart kids are not all that inspirational
- the school just sucks. I mean 10% graduation rate, ferreal....?
- I may be a naive HS kid... but telling people that I go to Wayne State and having them look at me like I'm an idiot even though i probably worked 200x harder than them during HS
- Food sucks
- Can't go home to 'escape' it if I need to...'rents may be moving out of state
- med school is expensive (52k/yr tuition)
Things that are good
- Full ride
- Dorms are amazing
- Accepted to MED SCHOOL at the age of 17...hello
- Medstart kids are great
- Go out with little debt/debt free

Very, very torn. There is also a middle of the road option...Michigan State's BS/DO program. Not a full ride in UG, but I can still apply out to MD schools. Thoughts??

Very good points. U of M would undeniably be a better college experience, and could open more impressive doors for you than Wayne.

You're taking a risk either way...what does your gut tell you?

I can't tell you what to do. I would take the Wayne acceptance and gun like hell for a better med school, knowing that at least I have the Medstart conditional and taking my full ride to the bank. Even if you love U of M, you could still spend 4 years there for med school.

Looking back, my college experience was great because of my friends, not because of location, food, dorms, or other particulars of the campus. It sounds like you could have a great time at Wayne with the kids in the Medstart program.

To be quite honest, I don't think you'll regret going either place. So follow the better gut feeling.

First of all, despite my Wayne Bashing, I still think it is probably a better school than MSU's med school. MSU is a helluva fun undergrad too though.

Anyways, all the opinions are here for you decide. I think what its going to come down to are these 3 factors and how important they are to you.

Academics:
Michigan>Wayne. Wayne won't put you at a disadvantage, but the professors and opportunities are stronger at Michigan (but this goes with pre-med courses being somewhat tougher---weeder courses in Freshmen year are not the easiest)

..the previous poster mentioned going to Michigan Med from Wayne as an undergrad, but Michigan accepts so many UMich undergrads to their med school (I think it was ~40-50 when I was applying), that they really favor out of state applicants over other in staters (like MSU, Wayne, EMU, etc). You may have to really kick ass in undergrad to make this happen.

Finances:
Wayne>>>Michigan. Ann Arbor is expensive compared to Detroit, and you have a full ride to Wayne.

Social Scene:
Michigan>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Wayne.
Look, if you are a social kid you will find ways to have fun anywhere.

But Michigan is an unbeatable social network. Michigan's national reputation brings people from California, New York, and all over the Midwest. It brings quite a rich and diverse culture that makes Ann Arbor a pretty unique college town (which sounds like something you care about).

Oh, and the food is amazing in Ann Arbor (dorm food, aside obvi)---be ready to pack on a couple lbs if you move there.

If you like sports, being involved directly in a college sports environment is something you definitely want to experience. The tailgates are unbeatable, and even if the teams aren't doing so hot--It's pretty fun going to play pickup ball and getting dunked on by Steve Breaston and having pre-transfer Ryan Mallett drain 3's on you.

There is a reason people like me get so irrationally angry when anyone questions the merit of Michigan---we are all freaking obsessed with the school because of what an amazing college experience it is. I dare you to find a person who went to Wayne say the same.

You have to decide if you really care about that type of experience--its not for everyone and I don't blame them if they don't care about the fratty, Go-Blue rah rah environment.

If it truly is a 50-50 scenario, just go with your gut feeling, as medzealot said. Visit the campuses again, see where you feel most "at home."

Hijacking the thread to talk about food now.

Big Ten Burrito (esp. after many adult beverages) = close to heaven.

Blimpy Burger = heaven followed by the bowel movement from hell

Turkish coffee from Jerusalem Garden...oh so good

You done it now. Jeez and I thought I was done with this thread like 3 days ago.

Breakfast/Brunch:
Northside>Angelos>Afternoon Delight>Broken Egg

Burrito:
Pancheros>>BTB>Banditos>Tios

Sandwich:
Zingermans>Maize and Blue>Amer's

Junk:
Mr. Spots Hot Wings (I just drooled typing that..true story)>NYPD>Pizza House>No Thai>Cottage Inn

Don't worry about med school if you goto blimpy burger more than once a year...your coronary arteries won't last

If you go with your gut in this sense...its a no brainer

This is pretty much perfect. I love Northside for fantastic and cheap breakfast.

There is a Mexican place on Stadium Called "Senor Lopez's Mexican Restaurant," next time you're in town go there and get the torta with Cochinita Pibil. You should probably wear a diaper cause you're going to piss yourself.

You ever make it to Mike's Deli in chelsea? best sandwich I've ever had, without exaggeration.

Also, the Philly Cheese Steak from Mr. Spots is off the hook, albeit a little overpriced.

Sushi from Miki's. Next to a trashy bar (I think called "Live") which used to be an solid Italian place called D'Amatos. mmmm.

Coffee/tea from Sweetwaters.

The Sunday brunch at the Gandy Dancer.

Palio's for good, reasonably priced Italian. Grazi for an awesome, overpriced date...laugh at the people at the Chop House.

Drinks on Friday night, Good Time Charley's (super hot [female] bartender named Devon) thou I never stayed in one bar for long.

Blasphemy! Couldn't let this go!

First, Blimpy burgers are indeed "cheaper than food", and therefore disqualified from comparison to foods. Area burgers that are good include Ypsi's Full House.

Second, Angelo's hands down wins every time: Their Eggs Benedict is heaven on Earth. My oldest daughter was practically raised in their Restaurant from 3 weeks of age until I left A2. As an honorary extension of the hospital and med school, you cannot beat Angelos, ever.

Third, Zingerman's may win overall for food by general consensus - but do not discount Maize and Blue's sandwiches with fried eggs on top. Fried Egg you say?! Yes, serious applicants apply within.

And finally, Cottage Inn (the actual restaurant) has an amazing clam chowder that I'd recommend to anyone.

I'll give you Mr. Spots as a solid wing performer. I do also agree that Tios is way overrated and a disappointment (plus they always messed up my orders).

Gone are a good, hole-in-the-wall Mexican and a super-awesome Laotian restaurant (now re-located on Detroit's North side) that was like Thai Soul Food - drooling now.

Throw in Red Sea in Ypsilanti > Blue Nile for Ethiopian too. And Da-Lat in downtown Ypsi has a strong Pho.

wait is Cottage Inn the place near South U that serves the semi-authentic Chicago deep dish?

/Still haven't found anything in Ann Arbor that compares to Buddys.

Oh...and the bomber dog at the Bomber Cafe in Ypsi (great WWII airplane decor) is:
A hot dog.
Filled with cheese.
Wrapped in bacon.
Battered.
Deep fried.

I hear the bomber dog is delicious

I love love love Pizza Popalis. Real deep dish in Greektown. (I have house in SE Michigan still)

Hmmm...main place is a full-blown restaurant on William. Pasta and other dishes is why I would go to the sit-down location. As for their pizza, the BBQ Chicken is not too shabby.

Oh Ann Arbor, how I miss thee.

oh I'm thinking of Pizza House. One of my best memories was eating a deep dish there after seeing a friend play a show at the Blind Pig. Yeah, Buddys is a big favorite of my extended family. I've never officially lived in Michigan, but most of my family is based in the Detroit area, and I spent a lot of time with them when I went to school in Ohio. Now that I googled it, I've had Cottage Inn, but I don't think from the actually restaurant. Either way, anything is better than the NY-influenced crap I have to suffer through on the East Coast.

I ended my 21st at Pizza House...26 shots in, made a bit of a mess in the Pizza House bathroom 😳

Tangentially related point to subject of thread that I think I've posted many times before in this thread: In Ann Arbor you can walk around with little to no concern about your safety (i.e., when it's late as hell, solo, etc). In Flint, I could never do that, and around the WSU campus in Detroit, you can't really do that either. Just the nature of the beast, urban campus vs. nurturing shielded from the real world college town campus.

I say go UM (this is even coming from an MSU student). Detroit is a terrible place to commit yourself for eight years.

As anyone on this forum will tell you, getting into med school is a piece of cake anyway 🙄
I would take the Wayne St. md/bs degree because it alleviates literally 100% of your worries and insecurities about the most competitive part of becoming a doctor (getting accepted to a medical school.)

If you are smart enough to get accepted to a BS/MD program, I wouldn't doubt that you have more than sufficient drive/intelligence to go to med school from UMich. But if you go to Wayne St, you won't have to worry about doing any extra-curriculars, volunteering, applying to med schools, waiting for admission and dealing with transcripts, getting LOR's and paying application fees... instead you can focus 100% on education... this might actually give you more free time and leeway to experience Motown.

Also, don't worry about being bored in college or being in a place that people call "****ty" because that all depends on your outlook on life.
Some people will say Detroit sucks, it has high crime rates, it is a boring place, bla bla bla... but to some, being in a city is one of the most invigorating experiences ever... Motown has history, culture and diversity.

this is very true...i came to wayne thinking detroit sucks. However, Honors classes and living there has totally changed my mind.

Dude, go to Michigan. I had the greatest 4 years of my life there, and got into an amazing medical school, in part, because of Michigans reputation as a pre-med powerhouse. It is an amazing college town, compared to Detroit where you simply will not have the same experience, in terms of the bonds you make and campus environment around.

The pre-med education there is top notch. If you have the intelligence (which it sounds like you do, based on UM acceptance and a Wayne COMBINED acceptance), then you will most likely do well as long you put the hours and work in. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 50 of my pre-med friends at Michigan, and I would say 45 of them goto top 25 med schools, whereas the other 5 goto Wayne....

Plus I know you may want to be a doctor now, but you are very young. In case you do change your mind, Michigan will give you the opportunity and resources to do ANYTHING you want.

Just get rid of that Sparty crap and Go Blue!

I totally concur. If you go to Michigan, take care of business, you will have opportunities down the road to be competitive at almost any medical school four years down the road.
