I'm a UofT undergrad student awaiting my letter of whatever may come and I'm driving myself crazy trying to study for finals. I have no idea what my chances are but I'm hoping for the best. I don't want to have to back and do another useless year of undergrad- hey maybe I can go back and learn a little more about mitochondria or how flagella function, I don't think so. I have a 3.87 c.g.p.a(neuroscience). and my dat scores are considered average to say the least but I've been told many times that the DAT doesn't really matter. Does any one know when I'll get some answers or what?

How was your interview?
you have a really good chance... unless you have issues with socializing, can't communicate your opinions well, can't derive lessons from your past experiences... blah balh blah... i don't see any problem of u getting in.

I think my interview went alright I guess, that's all I can say. Well, I had the Dean in my room, no pressure there, he was observing the interviewers and I made him laugh before the interview even started, he's a pretty cool guy, that Dr. Mock(I think that's his name-I was too nervous to remember). I've emailed a bunch of first years, but they couldn't give me very much feedback on the interview process. So you go to UofT DDS donkey, what are the people like? I'm a people person and I really like to just chill with friends and hang out, so I hope the people at UofT are somewhat sociable. I'm not just some geek, that asks his mom how to get around the city because I've never taken the TTC. I think you get the picture. I was athlete of the year in high school, and I'm engaged to a bikini model(she's also a chiropractic student guys, so yes I can actually have a conversation with her too)-life can really be tough sometimes- And all my friends told me to go into medicine- If they only knew the life of a successful dentist. Anyways, I'm so psyched, I hope I get in.

DDSDonkey, can you offer some insight as to my chances? My GPA isn't high (~3.75ish). I am a fourth year student. Dat scores... well... average too 🙂

Hey Jase133,
How did your interview go? By the way, your gpa is above 3.7 so you should have a good chance I would think. Also, don't let the DAT bother you too much, its only worth 10%. If you're an alright person, I think your chances are pretty good. Good Luck!

Plugger, enlighten me on the life of a successful dentist... i'd really like to reaffirm my purpose here in dentistry 😕
Jase, i know alot of ppl in my class who had gpas around the 3.75 mark; however, they were the ones who got off the wait list... It all depends on the applicant pool. If previous years reflect what will happen this year, i think you have a good chance!

I heard that UofT is losing their accredation in some specialties such as ortho. Is this correct?

DDSdonkey,
What I meant was that dentists have the flexibility to work whenever the heck they feel like working. If you want to work 60 hrs a week and have the patient base to accommodate then good for you. If you're a hardcore slacker and want to work 20 hours a week you can make a decent living doing that as well. You don't have to carry a pager around, most situations aren't life or death, many dental procedures produce immediate effects- helps to increase job satisfaction and reward, and you are well compensated for your work. I also like the educational aspects underlying preventive dentistry and I am super keen on cosmetics. Both my parents are not professional people, in fact neither one finished high school- and I'm the first person in my extended family to finish university. The one piece of advice my parents gave me was to chose a career where I could be my own boss. Dentistry is the way to go. Sure, dentistry can be very stressful, and requires mad patience but the positives definitely outweigh the negatives in my opinion. Oh and what do you mean by, "I'd really like to reaffirm my purpose here in dentistry" ? Are you not enjoying the dental school experience or am I not understanding you?

Oh and one more thing. DDSdonkey, how do you afford 23 grand a year?

My interview went okay. I don't really have any feelings toward it because I've been too various interviews before for jobs and stuff like that. I just try my best and see what happens.

Do you know if U of T looks at your 4th year marks as well if you are completing it currently?

No, they are only considering what has been completed. If they decide to accept you, they will consider your current courses, just to make sure you didn't fail like every course this year- JUST MORE RED TAPE to try and keep you on your toes!
Go UofT

Go U of T too 🙂

I really like the city. Can't really say I like the school too much (old facilities), but that doesn't bother me.

Plugger, well i asked that question, cuz sometimes i wonder why i chose dentistry as opposed to the millions of other careers out there. I'm young, do i really know that this is for me?

Hey don't fret,
I know it seems like you may be making a mistake, how could you possibly know what you want in life at such a young age, with little to no "real" exposure in most professions, but you have to look at it another way. Things could be worse- you could be working at Blockbuster and lose your motivation to continue on with your education. So consider yourself lucky. I do. Would you mind answering some of my posted questions- Whats UofT dents really like? One of the first years at UOfT that helped me alot was Alan (he gave me a few suggestions on how to approach the interview, eventhough he had no idea what they were going to ask - you may know him- I have forgotten his last name(starts with K)- nice guy. Anyways keep your chin up man- life can't be that bad.

Plugger,
Thanks for the advice. As for your questions, ... well at least for my class, ... what can i say.. hmm.. well like any other class, there are the super keener/nerds who make the effort to get 100 on every test.. these ppl i'd say are more reserved but nonetheless friendly WHEN spoken to; you have the under cover nerds ( ppl who say they don't do work but obviously do)- most of which are really cool, more social than the prior group, but seem to be inhibited from having tooo much fun.. i think this would be the majority of my class.. then you have the slackers who just want to pass. Socially, our class is ok, we always make the effort to celebrate each others bdays.. however a big factor in the lack of social events is the fact that many ppl live outside the downtwon core(commuters).. so after school most ppl go home as opposed to doing any socializing (hangin out kinda stuff). OH and i also noted that social groups , are kinda determined by a perceived segregation by race. I don't like it, but ppl say its there. I relate to and socialize with everyone that i share interests with (get along with) - but some ppl i guess just have a tendency to be gregarious. Most ppl say that this was a trend they have always lived with.. for me it wasn't. Compared to my undergrad, UofT is lame....but then again, this is a professional faculty and median age is 24... i guess most ppl get lame when they get older.
Hopefully, in your year the interview process will leave your class with alot of personable ppl and cut out the social ******s and narrow minded individuals. I'd love to trade some ppl in my class for new ppl.

oh yea, i know alan, he's a great guy. You shoulda asked me for help on the interview... i helped in prepping the interviewers ie. i was a guinea pig for their stupid situational questions.
As for how i'm paying for this... bank loans.
later.
