Hi. I am currently attending vet school in Mexico City. The school is non-accredited. I'm hoping it will be by the time I graduate. It is a 5 year program. To become licensed in the U.S, is it mandatory to do my final year there? I'm not sure my school would allow me to finish my last year in the states. I would hate to have to do six years.

Unless it is like the Caribbean schools, you complete everything at your school (when it is accredited). If it is not accredited by the time you graduate, you have to go through the PAVE program to get licensed in the US.

If your school is not accredited, you will have to complete the ECFVG or PAVE program.......PAVE does allow for you to do the clinical experience part of the program while a currently enrolled student in your vet school (i.e. in your last year before you graduate) or after your graduate (as an additional year). The ECFVG is only for those who have graduated from their vet school. PAVE is accepted in a majority, but not all, of the US states. Here's some information on PAVE you should check out: https://www.aavsb.org/PAVE/ClinicalExperience/

The better option is always the ECFVG, as it is accepted in all 50 states in the USA, as well as in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Allow me to clarify one thing stated above by CalliopeDVM: You can actually get the ECFVG started up to a year before you graduate! You can complete steps 1-3 of the program before you graduate. HOWEVER, you can only complete step 4 (the CPE) once you have graduated and provided proof to the ECFVG program. So technically, you could finish the entire ECFVG within a short time (couple of months) after graduation.

Question: so if someone did the PAVE, they would only be allowed to work in Arizona California Colorado Connecticut Georgia Idaho Iowa Illinois Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Minnesota Mississippi Montana Nebraska New Hampshire New Jersey New York North Dakota Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Puerto Rico Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virgin Islands Virginia Washington West Virginia Wisconsin or Wyoming? (https://www.aavsb.org/PDF/PAVE/paverecognition.pdf)

but throught the ECFVG I could work somewhere like North Carolina?

Have I got that straight?

That's right. PAVE accreditation is accepted in 37 states and is run by the AAVSB, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know if PAVE is accepted in other countries (like the ECFVG is, for example)

ECFVG is accepted in all 50 states + other countries, and it is run by the AVMA.
I would just go with the ECFVG. It is intense, but its name carries weight. People know what it means to have gone through that, even American vets who have never had to suffer through it (the CPE has a tough reputation!). I recently applied to internships through VIRMP at Tufts, Texas A&M, University of Tennessee, Cornell, and a few others. During interviews I impressed some board certified specialists who used the words "that is no small feat" when I mentioned that I'd recently passed it all on my first attempt. I was matched at my top choice.

Go with the ECFVG! You won't regret it.
