This might be a dumb question, but does anyone know what UAB means by personal letters of reference? Do they just mean regular letters of recommendation from professors, or do they want letters from friends/employers, etc. (like the character reference letters for USF or the peer letter for UF, etc)? I just don't want to send in letters that are wrong!

Thanks.

I talked to the admissions office yesterday and they explained that they should be from people you've known for a while, like friends or your parents' friends, who can talk about your personal qualities: integrity, sense of humor, special talents, etc. They're character references.

Hey, thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know.

I guess they want us to waive our rights on these as well? Can they be sent to interfolio or whatever?

That is correct, they want non-academic letters for these. I used an employer and a co-worker on a research project. I had known neither for a tremendously long time, maybe 2-3 years, but it was all fine.

Lol thanks for answering a year old question but not mine.

WHOOPS! That's what you get for quoting the thread instead of starting a new one 😛

Honestly I don't recall going to any effort to waive any rights or whatnot. My letter writers basically said they were going to have me proof it whether I 'waived my right to read it' or not, so it was a moot point. But, there is no form provided by UAB to check that off, so I would say it's not an issue. Never hurts to call admissions to confirm though.

As far as sending them to interfolio, no clue. I only sent those letters to UAB, so I just gave them both an addressed and stamped envelope and let them put them in the mail.

Good luck!
