What do you guys think? UAB = good program, great hours, great cash. UNC = smaller, harder hours, less cash, much better place to live. Vandy = great program, more pressure with hard intern year, hrs?, good moonlighting gig. Duke = rock star place, more stressful set-up, tough surgeons(?). Baylor = decent hours, good didactics, TMC, no moonlighting, Ben Taub kind of sux. UTH = longer hours, no CRNAs, good clinical experience, weaker didactics, moonlighting.

These are obviously just impressions. How would you rank them?

the real question is how would YOU rank them? none of us can tell you which program will be the best fit for you. you will get good training at all of those places. you have to decide what aspects are important to you.

FWIW I would rather live in Nashville or Houston than B-ham, no experience w/ NC.

Moonlighting is great but not something I cared greatly for.
Interviewed at some of those places except UTH and Baylor when I interviewed...
For me it would have gone: Duke (I loved it), Vanderbilt, UNC, UAB

Don't know about Baylor or UTH so not on the above list...but who cares what I think as you are the one ranking.

Thanks for the input. I'm doing the ranking...but you help me sort out my justifications and reasons for liking programs when I hear about yours.

Between those two, I'm leaning towards UAB. The Vandy residents didn't seem as happy as UAB's folks and seemed to work longer hours. I also loved UAB's chair and PD more than Vandy's folks. Vanderbilt though had way more cool toys, like that app for their Ipads pulling up OR video streams and vitals. I also liked the idea of Vandy Valet service, but not sure how good it is in practice.

"Vanderbilt Valet
The medical center provides a concierge service for all housestaff for services ranging such as dry cleaning, auto maintenance, and jewelry repair. Employees pay only for the cost of the actual service, and the concierge service handles delivery and pickup. The Vanderbilt Valet office is conveniently located just inside the entrance of Medical Center North."

IMO, Birmingham is less cool of a location as compared to Nashville, or the others. The cost of living though was less, and it seemed a lot less stressful to live in.

Vandy Valet is very nice. in residency they: delivered flowers for my anniversary, fixed my flat tire in the parking garage while i was in the OR and picked up and sent something for me FedEx that I had to have out that day. probably not enough of a reason to pick Vandy though, certainly a nice perk. Surprised you felt the residents work more and are less happy. i couldnt disagree more, in general, but maybe you caught someone on a bad day. i think that ultimately you will be as happy as you want to be, whichever program you choose.

Yeah, I wonder who you were around that gave you that impression. We are a pretty happy bunch and get along great for the most part.

Well the happiness wasn't by much, but it was noticeable enough from dinner that my wife asked me about it.

Work wise, it seemed like the senior residents would be looking to get folks out a bit later in the day than at UAB, say by about an hour? I think the UAB folks were saying 3-4 PM while the Vandy folks were 4-5.

Don't get too defensive; I still think it was a great place and I appreciate that yinz do too.

You belong with me in Pittsburgh.

I would like to add that Vanderbilt Valet wrapped ALL of my presents for Xmas this year(free). A nice perk for someone like me who usually shops the week before the big day.

Be careful of the dreaded "Vanderbilt Syndrome"

Nice bring back from threads of years past!

I assume you are kinda trolling here but to humor those that don't get it.....there is no such thing! Do a search if you're interested in the backstory.

I was just trolling, militarymd was a big proponent of it

if you like regional, cardiac, research, definitely Duke, there's no comparison, highly recommended overall.
