University of Alabama Birmingham
Pros
University of Tennessee Health Science Center
Pros
Pros
- Pass/Fail Pre-clinical Curriculum
- Will have several friends attending
- Love Birmingham
- Great research opportunities
- Really enjoyed the second look, the current students, and the administration (everything was incredibly organized and well put together)
- Would be in Tuscaloosa for my 3rd year (bad hospital system in Tuscaloosa)
- I am in the primary care track, but I am having second thoughts about pursuing primary care; however, I am not bound to pursue a primary care field—despite being in the program.
- Would be 10K more a year (not sure how substantial 40k over 4 years would be in the grand scheme of things—any input?)
University of Tennessee Health Science Center
Pros
- Instate, 10K cheaper per year
- Similar research opportunities
- Not in any tailored program (such as the primary care track mentioned above)
- Great hospitals for 3rd AND 4th year
- Can do an away rotation closer to home
- It’s in Memphis (honestly unsure as to whether this is a pro or con—not very familiar with the city)
- Has a graded scale (i.e. ABCDEF)
- Unorganized interview day, doesn’t seem as well put together as UAB
- Summary: My largest concern with UAB is the increased tuition (10k per year) and being in Tuscaloosa for my third year. My largest concern with UTHSC is the graded scale. I’m not entirely sure what I want to pursue, but both schools score similarly on STEP 1. In my eyes, these two schools seem equivalent in terms of academia and research opportunities, but I would love to hear the opinions of others.
