Im on call tonite at this community hospital in chicago. Im just walking through the halls and I see a newspaper article about a cardiologist here on staff who is a "master interventionalist" who does uae embolizations. I could not believe what I was reading. The article goes on to boast how this cardiologist trains interventional rads in his 3-4 day interventional seminars!
When or where will this end. Every cool interventional procedure is hijacked by cards. Perhaps neuro IR is only inevitable. What the 😱

GOD I hope this isn't the case. It's ridiculous. I'm at one of the better academic places in Chicago doing a rotation, and man, the interventional radiologists are doing tons of these UAE's this year. This must be some gimick, and I doubt anyone who really knows anything would send their patients to this guy. The problem with UAE is that it's so new, so "in vogue" for women, groups and academics alike both advertise for women to call and make appointments for possible UAE. So I suppose good marketing could get even a shoddy guy quite a lot of business, especially in such a big market like Chi-town.

Are you serious? Please don't be so melodramatic.

What do you have to say about interventional radiologists putting in gastrostomy tubes? Central lines? Dialysis catheters? Carotid artery stents?

Or were you going to say the surgeons hijacked them from you?

Get used to it. Medicine is all about stepping over your boundaries these days. This "hijacking" isn't going anywhere. We all have to contend with people from other specialties doing what was once exclusive.

Actually most peripheral and coronary stenting procedures were developed by interventional radiologists and done soley by IR professionals. It was literally highjacked by cardiologists and vascular surgeons once it gained popularity. I think the next big thing is cardiac CT and MR. We will have to fight to keep those with radiology. It will be our job as budding radiologists to fight for it. I'm actually pretty happy seeing how passionate some of the radiology residents are about this. I've heard a few radiologists say they will deny requests to teach cardiology fellows to read MR's. It's about time!!!

We can fight all we want. But we aint stopping the cardiologists from buying their own machines, and attending weekend cardiac imaging courses in Hawaii. 😀

True, but how can they be board certified in interpreting the studies by attending conferences in Hawaii? Isn't that an reimbursement issue?

Dont need to be board certified in anything to read imaging studies. A medical license has no specialty specific restrictions.
