SDNers, i need some input.

I've gotten acceptance into USC in SoCal and UBC in Vancouver, Canada. I'm having a tough time making a decision.

Right now, my heart is set on USC.

Pros about USC:
1) It's in California. Weather, life, etc....is much more appealing
2) It's been my dream to attend college in the states. This is my chance.
3) I heard from a researcher at a California school that it is easier to work in California as a dentist if you've gotten your degree there. If you have your degree from elsewhere, you have to take a certification exam. Any truth? I didn't think so, but if so, then going to USC will be a better choice for me, because ultimately, I want to live in California.
4) I love the students/people and atmosphere at USC.

Cons about USC:
1) More expensive. In the end, I think it'll cost me another 60-70k to go to USC. Is the experience worth the cost?

Thanks

hey S, do u like PBL? How is UBC since u didnt mention anything about UBC?

if you are canadian go to ubc
american then usc

it's tough getting a job in california (desirable areas) as a dentist even if you went to school there. i'd say UBC.

I was going to say you have to be "******ed" if you take american over canadian if you are canadian

UBC is also PBL.

I am a Canadian.

Thanks for the input. Clearly more votes for UBC. Thanks for the input.
Anyone for USC?

I'm still waiting for hear from UPenn and Nova. If it was either or those schools, would that change the decision? UPenn is my top choice.

If your parents will pay for your tuition
and you want to to go USC then go there.
IF you have to pay off your tution later, go to UBC.
although Vancouver is such a boring place to live

Hi there! I recommend going to UBC! I heard it is very difficult for dentists to find work in California according to several dentists I have talked to. Also, it is very saturated in dentists depending where you want to practice, especially in Southern California. Good luck with your decision!

I would choose ubc.. Are you in province or out? I didn't get accepted today so I'm assuming I'm on their "waitlist". Congrats!

My Canadian classmate told me Canadian schools are very competitive, SC students are super chill. Also survey around the California dentistry market first before setting your heart on practicing here, the state is dying, the markets are saturated, not uncommon to start out 80k/year. Not to mention you won't be qualified for IBR, and I have no idea how you're supposed to pay off USC loan without rich parents. Go to UBC, good luck

Thanks for the input guys. Each and everyone of your replies helps.

Now, if I study at UBC and decide I want to locate to California in the future, does anyone know how the process works? And would it be any different had I studied at USC vs. UBC?

Thanks again.

Hey, in a similar situation. Was accepted and put down deposits at UDM and Nova, and just got accepted to UBC yesterday (IP). Also have an interview at USC next week. Also struggling with the decision... but at this point it's looking like I'll just stick with UBC. In the end, USC is about double the tuition (+ travel costs), which is hard to justify..

R u serious? Of course UBC!!! My sister graduated from that school and then moved back to the US. and she says if I had to go over the whole process I would choose that school again.
Also with the economic situation in the US especially CA, if you have a chance to be in Canada stay there. I wish I could start my practice in Canada.

Thanks for all the advice, guys.

UBC it is 🙂

UBC dude...u don't have to deal with US F1 visa or IRS or anything. Save on health care cost, UBC has brand new sim labs and clinics, and UBC class size much smaller (40). Only downside to UBC is the party scene is lacking compared to American schools.

I would've picked UBC over my American dental school any day, especially cuz I'm from Vancouver.

Vancouver is fun though

Agreed. Great great food too. Lots of outdoor activities as well, all year long.
Not to mention it's a much better city to live in...clean, fresh air, extremely high personal safety.
