Hello everyone, what follows are some middle-of-the-night ramblings:

I've been lurking in this forum for a while and finally had the Application-year melt-down I was told to expect by my med school predecessors. I've been accepted at a terrific school, NYCOM, but currently live in Buffalo and would love to stay here. When I called Mr. Rosso in December, I was at the top of the middle third. When I called last week, he said I was in the bottom third. I was so stunned that I called right back, and he apologized for misleading me in December but I was and still am in the bottom third. OWCH!!

So I finally cracked. My dad bought me a few margaritas (and himself a few more) and it's not as bad as it seems, I'm still going to be a doctor. I feel terribly ungrateful to wish that I could stay here.

Which brings me to this forum: I read the waitlist threads from the last year or two (or three -- let's be real) and have regained some equanimity. Let me share what I've gleaned if you're not as research-neurotic as I am:

1. I guess our place on the waitlist will really be determined mid-April.
2. Misinformation will be accidental but frequent
3. People really get in through orientation
4. the bottom of the waitlist has some distinguished company
5. you can get in at any time

Anyway, just wanted to share my Buffalo-related anxiety, 😳 and I hope to see everyone as classmates this August!!

also, you are right NYCOM is great from what I hear. My sorority sister who is very very smart goes there so I know they take some great people🙂

that much waitlist movement in one month? anyone know how often they interview? I had about 20 ppl there w/ me on my interview day.
 
Would any of you care to tell me what would make you go to UB over any other school (ignore money and IS status)? I will really appreciate it.

I know the thread is for UBwaitlist but I would not mind 2-3suggestions.

SUNY Buffalo has a huge amount of waitlist movement. According to a friend who goes there, they usually take the top 2/3rds of their waitlist every year. I know you just got bumped into the bottom third, but I would just be patient. Don't withdraw, don't give up, but don't expect it. You may be pleasantly surprised in late spring/summer.

They only interview on Wednesdays when the Admissions committee meets. I believe they interview every week. My friend just went on his last Wednesday.

Hi. Just found this thread. I'd like to add myself to the list. I recently found (after calling numerous times) I am in the upper third. (I am psyched b/c UB is my first choice). I think everyone on this list should know the following: Although nothing is a sure thing in this game, as I've seen posted here in this thread, I also have heard that the past two years they offered admission to the top, middle, and some of the lower third of the waitlist. So that puts all of us in the running. Best of luck to all !!!
 
Good luck to everyone, i was in the top third waitlist and just got an acceptance, took about 3 weeks from the point of interview so the waitlist is def. moving!

If you do not know your status, you can call the admission office and ask where exactly you are on the waitlist!!! Mr. Rosso is very nice and welcoming in that regard!!!

Thanks everyone!!! It was just what I needed to feel a bit better. It's really hard because I have a lot of friends who are students... not to mention I date a UB Med student. 😳

one thing that confuses me: "they usually take the top two thirds of the waitlist" ... is that the waitlist now? or the waitlist as it is in April when we check back again?

Congratulations! I swear, I wish I had known how readily they made mistakes on our waitlist placement.

Did you call and ask again...well I guess it doesn't really matter because you position will change as more people are waitlisted/accepted from the waitlist.
 
i interviewed jan 17th and heard feb 6 via snailmail.

I don't think they make mistakes or something! Its just that the waitlist is pretty dynamic and can go up or down after every interview date, so ...

Thanks sekem, I wish that were true... but Mr. Rosso told me "congratulations, you're at the top of the middle third" in December, and "You're in the bottom third and were last month, too" in January. He also said "I'm very sorry if we misinformed you last month." I read the last three years' threads and it seems that people have been misinformed multiple times.

Anyway, I do hope you are right and it may just dynamic back up by April!!!

I see what sekem is saying and I think that is about right. I think it changes as more people interview. It would have to as more people are added to the waitlist. So I think it may be where one really is at month X, and then month Y when more people have interviewd the waitlist grows and places would have to change as there are more candidates. Am I making any sense? In any case, good luck everyone🙂!!!!

exactly Noeljan, If I am on the middle third in lets say Jan, and after 4 interview days there have been many people placed on the top third this is bad news becasue I will be pushed by all these new people from middle third to bottom third!!! On the other hand, if many were placed on the bottom third, that will make me go up to the top third!!!

So this will continue till late April!!!

It is true what Sekem is saying. The wait list is dynamic. When I called Mr. Rosso last month he said I was in the "middle bottom third." To me that sounds like in the middle of the bottom 1/3. But when I called him this week he said I am in the middle third. So maybe there was a misunderstanding.
 
So if people are inserted directly into the waitlist, then we all have some official 'score' after our interviews that leads to our placement I assume?

If this is true, then LOI etc. wouldn't do anything I guess? A score is a score right, and since we are done I assume we can't change anything. At least it's good to think that we can just relax, because we can't make a difference at this point.
 
Being on the waitlist is fun...it gives me something to do when I am on the net. Best of luck all! It will be fun to find our official places in April.
 
i know this is a little premature, becuase I just interviewed yesterday, but how long after you interviewed did you find out?
 
Check your online status first thing tomorrow. Mine was updated by 7am. And I had called Mr. Rosso by 7:45, and needed to call back at 8:00 once he showed up.
 
call tomorrow and you can find out.

Exactly, we all get one final score after the interview and thats ours and will not change no matter what!!! So the whole game is based on difference in numbers!!!

Call by monday and if you are waitlisted ask where you are in the list!
 
I found out I was wait-listed about a week after I interviewed. Everyone on the wait list receives a confidential score. Based on that score you can either be placed in the upper, middle or bottom third of the wait list.

So I should call tomorrow to find out my place? Anyone else feel like they interviewed very well and still got waitlisted? I am nervous, because I am getting waitlisted EVERYWHERE

I know the feeling... I've only had 3 interviews so far (4th is on Monday). But after being put on the bottom third at Buffalo (where I thought I'd be put at least a little higher) and now finding out I got put on the "Continuing Candidates" list at Temple, I'm starting to doubt myself and get a little scared :scared: . Gotta just keep truckin' though, not much alternative to that.

How about we move the Waitlisted-> accepted to their own category and off the previous list. That way we have a view of the current waitlist with only the people still on it, but keep those other names there as motivation for hope. If I knew how to do it myself I would.

any idea on how they started accepting people off of waitlist already? i thought Mr. Rosso said they would start taking people off in April after interviews were finished.

Added myself... i was shocked that i even got waitlisted after the first thing my interviewer said to me was "Im not even supposed to be here, we are under staffed and behind..." and then proceded on hitting me with ethics and the healthcare system and challenging everything i said. It was exciting, he never even introduced himself, i still dont know his name.

Did you interview this Wed.? The reason that I am asking is after I was done with my interviews, I was waiting for the elevator, and saw someone getting grilled by a male interviewer in the atrium. I remember thinking that I felt bad for him.....
 
Yea, i interviewed on weds... but that wasnt me, i saw the person that you are talking about and that interviewed sounded mellow compared to the one i had, we were arguing about stuff and he was just doubtful about everything on my amcas app.

Okay, I completely understand what noeljan, sekem and purometal are saying. I do understand how it could have changed dynamically -- I'm extremely aware of the process and could describe it to you in detail. We are all assigned a score after the committee vote and depending on how other people do after our interview we get ranked.

What I experienced was different, and perfectly clear, LONG conversations about the waitlist with him. We talked for about ten minutes each time. He made a mistake, admitted to and apologized for it, and that's fine.

=) My hearing hasn't been damaged _that_ much by my DJ career.
 
Gosh, I'm sounding really testy about this. Do you guys not believe me?
 
I don't think you're being testy. We all can make mistakes, although such a misunderstanding will definitely leave me feeling down and hopeless. At least he apologized. We still have a good chance of getting in. Hopefully we will all be classmates.
