i've heard the top 1/3 is just a delayed acceptance (everyone gets accepted off that) then how far they get beyond that depends on the year. I've heard that in years past sometimes they get halfway through the second third, sometimes they get all the way through it and even take some off the bottom third. As someone on the bottom 1/3 though, I am certainly not banking on an acceptance as I don't believe they take all that many people from that third.
 
soggun, I suggest writing them a letter of intent. i've heard people have made it through even though their position is not so ideal. i hope we all either move up or get accepted. good luck to ya and everyone on the post.

I am currently on the waitlist for UB (middle 1/3). Any suggestion as in what I should do? I've just interviewed with the school on wed (4/25). Should I wait till I send them a letter of intent? It's almost May and I haven't gotten any acceptance yet. 🙁 UB is my greatest hope now, and I really liked the school and the faculties when I visited.

this is true in regard to last year's process, this year as they had 30% increase in the number of applications stuff may be different, so ...

Heh, I'm still on Hold at Downstate and you got in there, so if you want to trade your Downstate acceptance for my top 1/3rd waitlist at Buffalo... :laugh:

Seriously though, how random is this whole thing, argh.

Heh, don't be too paranoid though...they still interviewed a similar # of people even though the apps went up, which really just means that a lot of the increase was from long-shot people with no real hope at all.

i wouldn't be so sure about interviewing the same number of people. it might have gone up slightly so anything can happen. i just called today and am still where I am so hopefully we can all stay or move up in the next weeks! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!!!
 
I just called Mr. Rosso today and found out that I am in the middle third. Not good, not bad. I hope they get through most of the list like last year!

Yep, even if I was accepted I doubt I'd end up at UB. I was just posting what I'd gathered from reading these forums - not really regarding my own situation. In any case, I did get a great feeling from UB so good luck to all of you looking to get accepted there. I'm just from NYC, so Downstate is a little more appealing to me location-wise.

haha, me too. you just have to see the acceptance envelop to believe everything; it's like there's optimism and pessism mixed.

Heh, you can probably just call and withdraw your waitlist spot to make it a little more likely someone else below you will get their acceptance a little faster (if at all obviously). Who knows, if the list goes they might even somehow get bumped to middle third or something.

Not that it'll affect me either way, but it'd be nice if you're going to have to end up telling them no anyways.

If you think about, Cirrus, with Soggun being in the bottom third, removing him from the waitlist is actually more likely to bring someone from the middle third down into the bottom third, rather than up. But either way it doesn't matter if he withdraws. He deserves to know if he gets in or not, I think, after going through the whole app process, I'd at least want to find out, even if I had no intention on matriculating.

Yep, part of it is what ingemar said. I would just like to know if I would get in. Like I said, I'm really not banking on it, but it would be nice to know. It is worth noting that in addition to Downstate, I also recieved an acceptance at Drexel, which I promptly withdrew (after about a week of decision-making). In any case, I am certainly mindful of other applicants and don't want to cause any undue stress by prolonging their notification of acceptance, but I do think I'd like to stay on waitlists for the time being - at least until I recieve my financial aid information from Downstate.

it's so exciting and nervous wrecking. i'm very grateful to have this forum and for all the chatter about UB; it just keeps me sane to know there are people in my same situation. I'm hoping the waitlist will move fast like it did last year! It'll be nice if we can all get in and reminisce about the time we freaked out about what will happen to us. There would already be a bond between us when we start school. haha..

hehe, we're not physically stacked on top of each other ya know...it probably wouldn't affect those higher on the list either way
 
I prefer to think of it as a high stakes game of Jenga.

People dropping out below you won't affect your chances of getting off the waitlist. If everyone but the top three people dropped out of the waitlist, then one would now be in the top 1/3, middle 1/3, and bottom 1/3, respectively. But that doesn't change the fact that the person in the bottom 1/3 is two people away from acceptance.

Haha, I think I know what happened. When Sekem moved up, someone copy pasted his name and placed him in the middle third but didn't change what his placement read so that it still read bottom third. Then, when I mentioned that I was in the middle third someone again copy pasted Sekem's info and replaced my name but it still read bottom third....that may or may not have helped. lol Either way, I'm not offended, just want to be accurate. Thanks!


And as far as I know, Sekem moved from bottom to middle and I am middle (for now)......good luck all!

just want to say good luck🙂 From what I heard in past years, top third has a very very good chance of getting in, and some from middle third too. I don't know how it is going to work this year, but from people I know in past years who were waitlisted then got in.

i started looking at apartments last night and i'm still on the waitlist :laugh:
 
I swear I was looking at apts as well during the weekend!

I guess for about $600-800 we can get a pretty OK one close to UB!:laugh:

WOW! Either their preferentially waitlisted people on student doctor or I'm not getting an acceptance, either way being in the bottom 1/3 stinks.

chung, don't worry!!!!! is it absolutely guaranteed? no. but upper 1/3 is very close to an acceptance, just wait it out! call mr. rosso on friday (since the last set of interviews is wed) if you are still freaked. 🙄

Is that $600-800 number for a two bedroom apartment? One of the students I talked to when I was interviewing said she paid $300/mo (her half of a $600/mo two bedroom apartment) and that it was one of the nicer places shes lived at.
