Hi,

I know this year is a difficult year due to the economy as applications are up and acceptance/retention tend to be better than previous years.

Does anyone know if Berkeley's waitlist ever moved this year? I think the previous threads I read mentioned that out of 66 seats, over 72 of the initial admission accepted their spots. I wasn't sure if anyone decided to decline admission or if the waitlist this year moved at all?

When opted.org publishes the stats of 2013's class, you can compare the amount of accepted students to the amount of students in the class. I believe UCB's class is ~60.

Or, if you called them directly, they would probably be willing to share that information with you.

The waitlist for UCBSO was almost instantly disbanded as 72 people accepted the 66 seats available.

So is your class now 72?

That's my understanding of what happened to Berkeley this year. But I wasn't sure if people started to drop out as four years of tuition (albeit public school) is still a lot for many people.

I know admission is up for many of the schools, but I also heard SCCO and others are still digging into their waitlist.

What? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to say, but why would people even bother applying if they weren't expecting to pay the tuition?

How are they gonna fit 72 people into a room that fits 66 seats? Being a public school, financial aid is very generous at Berkeley. I don't think a student going into optometry would care whether they accrued 150K or 160K. At those amounts, 10K isn't a huge difference. I don't even think 20K is a huge difference. But being older and doing my own home business might make me see things differently.

I just don't understand. If 72 students immediately paid their deposit, that means they found somewhere better? What? Somewhere closer? Somewhere cheaper (does it get any cheaper than Berkeley?)? I think it would be hilarious if Berkeley had to backtrack and tell 6 students that they made a mistake.

I can imagine SCCO digging into their wait list because everyone decided to turn it down for Berkeley. After all, the in-state tuition is a terrific bargain.

The biggest concern for a much larger than anticipated class would be expanded lab classes and usage of optometry lanes.
Of course, there will be 165+ of us at ICO, so I'm sure Berkeley will be fine.
