UC Davis CO 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Definitely -- there will be a table with 50% off sweatshirts outside the vet med bookstore!

where exactely is the vet book store? I know how to get to the vet genetics lab and that's about it 🙂

Oh, sweet! Heylodeb, a student can probably better direct you but it's right next door to Scrubs cafe, which is sort of in the middle of the veterinary teaching buildings like Tupper, Gladys, and GBSF. If this link works, the bookstore is right next to the food icon in the Med Sci 1b building.

sorry if this is off topic - but how bad will parking be tomorrow? Should I come early? Really want to see the VERT demo!

From what I gather from long time Davis residents, biking and public transport are the best means of getting into & out of campus. The UC Davis Transportation service estimates that if you get to campus by 10am, you can get parking but biking seems the way to do it.

Yay! Thanks for the help guys! I'll probably just throw a bike into the car. If anyone is looking for me, I'll be the one wearing a CSUS "Beat UCDavis" shirt. Just kidding..... 😉

Badcats!!! I know who you are too!!!! I am so happy for us! Good to see a familiar face too!!!! =) Sorry for the delay in responding to you! =D

How did you figure me out?????:biglove:

Well it is kinda similar to your email, and I was on your committee...

Congrats Zeebrafinch, Minikittie and Conniepx!!

I'm super bummed I wasn't able to make it to picinic day. Can anyone update those of us who couldn't make it?

Anything really exciting happen?

PS. If anyone is looking for a place I've got a bedroom to rent out $500/month in Woodland (its really close to 113 so its a 10-14 min drive to the vet school!) PM me if you want to know more/see pictures.

lol i didn't even know about this picnic business

anyone have any recs for complexes that have 1 bedroom or studio apartments?

I have heard good things about this place: http://daviswiki.org/Hanover_Place_Apartments

If I were moving into a 1 bedroom, I'd probably chose that complex due to it's location. I live 2 blocks away from there currently and it tends to be quiet (although it's across the street from a supermarket) and is near a lot of parks/greenbelts.

Otherwise, jesiah, just keep checking Craigslist and the facebook page for 2014ers. A lot of things pop up there.

Picnic day was awesome! 😀 Our float was amazing, Doxie Derby was quite the crowd pleaser (a whole basketball stadium full of people watching dachshunds dash after a lure), and all the freebie demos were interesting. Things like liquid nitrogen ice cream, cotton candy, free fig trees, even a horse AI demo, cow milking station, etc. There was a ton of stuff! I really enjoyed the sheepdog trials, fly ball demos and dog frisbee contest.

Does anyone know if we can order UCD vet school gear online? I went to the campus bookstore website and it doesn't seem to be very user friendly 🙁 (not many images, and hard to search). I think it would be fun to get a sticker for my computer, a license plate frame to spruce up the used car I'll be buying in the next few months, and/or a hat I can wear this summer 😀

Yeah -- you can order online. Go for it! 🙂

thanks incendium. when do leases usually start? when people say summer, do they mean june? july? august?

This reminds me -- my little warning about moving in...

Most leases start September 1st. If your orientation is like ours, it will start before September 1st, making moving in rather difficult. Some students were moving in the week of orientation and staying in temporary housing/hotels until September 1st and then moving into their homes/apartments in the evenings after orientation.

I wanted to be moved in before September 1st, so I arranged with my complex to move in before orientation started, but the guy who lived in my apartment didn't move out when he expected to (and he had every right to stay until August 30th), so when I arrived with moving van I was forced to unload the van into a vacant apartment that was being remodeled and "live" there (fully packed) for about a week before I could finally move in to my apartment (which I started at like 9pm the night before orientation began at 7am). It all worked out, but it was stressful, so just be aware of how things are here in Davis.

I think we start exactly on the 1st. But yeah, the rest of campus doesn't start until end of September so a lot of leases will be then.

Yea, similar situation for me.. My lease starts on Sept 5th so I need to stay at a hotel for 5 days. Does anyone know a decent hotel near campus that allows pets?

Thanks!

Like Pomona2006 said, most year long leases will start Sept 1 but if you're looking on Craiglist, definitely ask about the move-in day. Many are flexible and many start during the summer (June, July) due to people graduating and moving out early.

My move-in drama was similar to Pomona's... but not. My roommate and I had been bugging the property management company to contact the resident about an early move in but the current tenant never got back to us. I ended up moving in during the evenings after orientation (sucked) and living with my mom an hour away for the first week. Turns out the previous resident had left A MONTH PRIOR but failed to tell anyone. Utter failure.

thanks for the help everyone. i was worried that i would have to pay rent starting in june when i wasn't planning on moving up until end of august. hopefully my move in will be drama free.

i have another question. for the statement of legal residency, i saw that i would need the date my driver's license was issued. did they ask you guys for that? i called the dmv and they told me they can't tell me that information over the phone and that i would have to fill out some request form to get a copy from microfilm for 20 bucks because they don't have records from over 10 years ago or more. i'll pay to get it but i still think its lame/strange it's not in the system.

hey pomona. i did see that date there, but i just assumed they wanted the first date i got my license bc the date i have is 2008. do i just use that one then?

Yeah -- mine is a 2008 date as well (and I changed my residency from NY to CA in 2004, so I don't know what the original was). I'd call admissions just to double check, but I think you'll be fine using the 2008 date.

Does anyone who went to Picnic Day happen to have any pictures of the vet school students' float they'd be willing to share? I wanted to see it in the parade, but the rest of my group slept in so we only saw the last quarter or so and missed the vet school float. Actually, pretty much the only thing we saw was the VERT demo, and that was only because I pestered them to go see it. 😳

Thanks!

lol this float is freakin awesome. love the ecollar! thanks for sharin the pics!

I had fun at picnic day, I didn't actually spend much time at the VMTH (Doxie derby was too distracting), but I did get to show my parents around a bit. I was a bit overwhelmed knowing that I'll be there this Fall, but it was a great feeling at the same time. I also went to the breed showcase and saw some dog breeds I've never seen in person - dogs are amazing!

Do any current student have information on the dog walking program? A friend told me you get paid to walk a lab dog and have the choice to adopt afterwords, but I had a few questions regarding it, so if anyone has any info I'd love to hear it. 🙂

Hi I'm one of the colony dog walkers so if you have any questions feel free to message me. Its a great and easy way to at least make some money during your first year.

Wow UC Davis Vet school is so cool!!! I hope I get the chance to go there someday. I loved those photos. The float was so clever! Kudos to everyone that worked on it. 👍

hello everyone.

i have a question for the older folks here or perhaps those w/ a good ear. apple usually has a fall student special where you get a nano or ipod free or a discount off the touch w/ a powerbook purchase. for those who got the powerbook, did you get this added bonus as well? i only ask because i saw that the school recs. you get an iphone, and my contract is expiring very soon, but i find it hard to justify spending that much a year for a phone...

do you guys have an iphone?

I believe the people that got macs also got an iTouch with it.

I got an iPhone at the beginning of the school year as my contract was up and I had been meaning to switch (rollover minutes are nice!). Sure, it's an expensive phone to have, but I get a 15% discount every month because I'm a UC Davis student and I don't have anything fancy beyond the most basic texting plan, so it's not as absurdly expensive as it could be. I love it because you can get your school calendar on it so you always know when/where you have to be and such instead of having to be at a computer. I don't regret my decision to get it (even if I'm paying more than I used to).

Since iTouches get wireless internet, can we download our schedule onto those? Has anyone ever tried?

thanks pomona. so an itouch could be used instead of an iphone for the vet apps and what not then? do you guys use those apps a lot?

I don't think the iTouch gets applications, but I do know it gets wireless internet (unlike the iPhone, you actually have to be in an area with wireless, i.e., your apartment if you have a router or the school, but not randomly on the sidewalk). So as long as we have wireless internet access, I'm assuming we can download the iCal schedules . . . If anybody knows otherwise, please correct me if I'm wrong!

The iTouch should be able to do most apps that the iPhone does. Obviously, the ones that require a microphone or involve actually talking on the phone won't work, but most normal apps do.

exactely - an iPhone is just an iTouch with a camera and phone capbilities. I have owned both. The both have changed my life...not even kidding! Amazing capabilities. (switched over from verizon's wonderful netork to AT&T's not so great network/iPhone = WORTH it!)

Relatedly: does anyone know if there are any apps available or being developed for the Android/HTC/other Google phone? My cell phone plan ends soon, and I'd MUCH prefer getting a Google phone over an iPhone.

I got the Motorola Droid from Verizon just a month ago -- it's awesome. 😀 I can't compare to the iPhone since I've never used one but you can sync your Google calendar and contacts with the phone, have 3G internet (facebook, gmail, everything) all the time. I sync my class schedule through CERE with Microsoft Outlook which syncs to Google calendar which syncs to my phone. Haha, sounds complicated but all of it automatically updates so you have the most recent class changes on all applications.

There are tons of apps available, but I'm not sure what you're interested in. I like the free games 😛

thanks for the feedback everyone. i'm pretty much set on the mac at this point (i've had enough of pcs) but still debating a bit. o well.

how much are you guys paying for the iphone ?

I signed up for the Mac and already have an iPod Touch, and am also thinking about getting an iPhone. This may be headed somewhere I'm not sure I like... :meanie:

edit: Honestly the only reason I don't already have an iPhone is because I'm on a Sprint SERO (old employee referral) plan wherein I pay $30.00/month for 450 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends that start at 7 pm, unlimited PCS to PCS, unlimited texting and unlimited data, and I'm reluctant to get rid of it. If I reup my contract, however, I can sell the plan to another person and I have seen people pay $250 up front just to be able to sign up for this plan.

Oh haha I was specifically referring to the apps the vet school's developing for iPhones and iTouches. Thanks for your input re:scheduling stuff on the Droid! 😀

I have heard that any of the iphone apps can work on your itouch. But the davis apps are more for a clinical setting, so we still won't need them for a couple of years!!!

I have a mac now and love it! I want to get the iphone so bad, but I am mainly worried about the monthly cost. =(

Someone was asking about sync-ing the ical, etc to the iphone, you can do it, I think via mobileme, it is $99/year and through apple. But I think that you could also just transfer the data via the bluetooth connection on the mac/iphone.

BTW.....we got our Big Sib forms today!!!! Mine has already been completed!! I am so freakin' excited!!!!😀

BTW.....we got our Big Sib forms today!!!! Mine has already been completed!! I am so freakin' excited!!!!😀

Filled mine out too. 😀

edit: all they asked was our track preference, if we had a gender preference and how involved of a relationship we wanted (like, how often to meet or whatever). and there was a spot to fill in if you are requesting a specific person.

Okay so I finally started to look at all of the classes that we get to take and I am so excited!!!!!!!!! =D

Has anyone else clicked on the curriculum handbook section and looked at the syllabuses for each class????

Is it wrong if I want to take everything??
hahahaha....😍

Heh, me too. I've even started fantasizing about externships, mostly places where I'd love to do an internship, e.g., Hagyard, Rood and Riddle, etc. I'm sure they are crazy competitive, though.
