Hey guys on the welcome page a pdf of our class stats are up! Its exciting seeing where everyone is from and knowing which people from which schools you can pin down as SDNers. So stinking excited for fall!

Ok I'm just loitering but I'm a sucker for stats. I found this very surprising.

Applicants Admitted on 1st Application: (96), 2nd (27), 3rd or more (10)
Kind of makes me wonder if there's a stigma to applying more than once, or if those who apply around 3 times or so just for the most part don't have what it takes. In other words, those who get accepted the first time get snapped up and those who have to apply more than once are generally not suited period/give up.

what do you find surprising about it? pretty much what UCD's admit stats have looked like. (this sounds defensive when I read it - it's not - actually curious what you're surprised about 🙂)

I, however, am sitting here trying to decide whether these stats should encourage me or discourage me. My stats are actually better than the averages except for quant GPA and veterinary hours. Interested to find out whether it was my PS, eLOR's, or small amount of experience that kept me out this year. I'll find out on Monday! 😛

never mind, you edited while I was typing. 🙂

Well I really wouldn't be worried about the vet hours bit. 3,000 is way up there but I doubt they give more points based on more hours past a certain point ("This person has 10,000 hours? Much better than that lowly 1,000 hour person!") I mean really, if you're still around after 1,000 hours, you probably know what you're getting yourself into.

Funny, because aside from last 45 hours, GRE quant/verbal and veterinary hours mine are all far below average. 😉 It really does go to show that it's the entire applicant, yeah?

HopefulAg: I was also a little surprised by the # of applications stat. I do think that the number of 2nd or more was lower than the past few years.

wow. I think if Kelso (70s show) was here he would have just looked at me and said "BURN!"

Nah, not tryin for that, actually all I'm saying is don't get too fixated on stats. They're fun to look at and analyze for sure, but there are many people who didn't get in who have stats above what is there and obviously quite a few of us who did who are below (otherwise those wouldn't be the averages!).

*sigh* fine. ruin my dream of having Ashton Kucher in my house.... lol!

I know what you mean, though. Everytime I lookat my app, I wish that I had been paying attention/asking questions here on SDN before I applied. I actually stayed AWAY from SDN during the app process because I would just start freaking out every time I read a couple threads! 🙂 I've learned my lesson now....and look forward to presenting a much stronger app this time around!

Aw look they used my undergrad from 12 years ago. That's gonna make Mount Holyoke so happy haha

I really like the stats!! I am happy to see that I fall in the median! I am however older than the average. But it is neat to see who has come to Davis with an emphasis in small/exotic/large/etc.....

Can't wait for FALL!!!! 😀

Also it is neat to see that there are so many students coming for a bio BS rather than an Animal Sci BS.

Oh, and I am happy that I am not the oldest person!!! =)

I was at Barnes and Noble the other day and saw this magazine!!

UC Davis SVM is ranked #2 (tied with Colorado) for the top Vet Schools in America!!!!

US News & World Report link

😍

I personally can't wait to have 4 more people from the 5 C's here at UCD SVM! (FOUR!!! That's got to be a record!) I know of the 2 Pomona College alum but I am curious about the Harvey Mudd and Scripps alum. Yay for Claremont representing in 2014! 🙂

Ah, I love UCD and all but ranking vet schools is ridiculously arbitrary and not really worth it. Also those rankings are way old, aren't they coming out with new ones soon?

I agree but it is still cool that they are up there, even though the rankings are from 2007. You would think that they would update the rankings before issuing the magazine, right?

hey class of 2014! congratulations.

so as many of you are finding out, it can be kind of a pain to get housing to start at an ideal time for your academic schedule. we have an extra room in our house that is furnished and for rent on a super short term and as needed basis... like when you find out that you can't move into your awesome new apartment until the 2nd week of september, like happened to me last year. 😱 we've pretty much only rented it out for visiting students in the past. your very short term housemates are mostly vet students and a lot of four legged creatures. we're about 3 miles from the vet school, totally doable by bike. pets are totally fine as long as they're friendly to other four legged (and two legged for that matter) creatures and you don't have like, sixty cats or something. PM me for more info and i'll send you the listing that we typically post. congrats again guys! can't wait to meet you all in the fall.

Ah, so 60 cats not OK, but I would be fine with my 42 cats. 😀 (Just teasing, I only have one who will be coming with me.)

Well, I had stats below the averages in GPA, and just about the same as the GRE when I first applied 3 years ago. My first try, I got an interview. When I didn't get it - I went to ask about it with the admin committee. They said that I should get more vet experience with horses if I wanted to be small/equine (most of my vet experience was in small animal). So - i did that. I got waitlisted that second year. Their advise was the same when I didn't quite get in by fall. I had surgery, tho, so couldn't get much large animal experience - so I took some night classes while working my regular small animal job. I got in that year, tho. I think it all depends on so many factors - you, your numbers, the other applicants profiles/stats, and the admin committee that year. My advise to anyone is NEVER GIVE UP! If this is what you want - just keep going as long as possible. Dreams are worth chasing. If you work for what seems like forever to do what you love for the rest of your life - it will be worth it. That's my feelings. I feel like i'm the poster child for having the carrot hanging in front of me - getting closer each time, encouraging me. I'm grateful for that, and especially grateful that I kept going. It meant hits to my ego and wallet - but so worth it. Don't look too closely at the stats -they are THIS YEAR'S stats - use them only as a slight idea of what you will be up against. Don't let them discourage you!!! And know - each year I spoke with the interview committee, they wanted to know what i would do if I didn't get in. I always felt good saying that I would keep trying. It was the truth - and they like that I was committed. 🙂

Wow, only one dairy person. I think that's me, but I'm really surprised that's such a low number!

Someone posted about the 5 colleges in SoCal. We've got two (Amherst and Mount Holyoke) representing from the 5 colleges in Mass!

I can't believe there are 10 lab animal people! Word on the street is that our attending vet of campus vet services for UCD is very pleased 🙂

Woohoo, that makes me pleased as well! I'll be president of the Lab Animal Medicine Club next year so make sure to come to the first meeting and introduce yourself! Our club is super tiny, so I'm really looking forward to more lab animal people 😀

I'm dairy too. Maybe they put one of us as large animal? 😕

I wish that I could have selected all of the above.

I would love to do exotics/small animal/mixed/teaching, but I could only pick one! =(

Oh well I went with exotics since it is more unique, then teaching would have been second, but I would like to be in a practice before teaching for a bit. So I guess that I went with what I was most likely to be doing right out of school.

Did anyone else have this dilemma?? Or am I just crazy and all over the board!! 😀

I don't even remember what I picked haha

If I'm not mistaken, that person just happens to already be in our class 😉

ekchad, I think I know who you are.. if you interviewed at Western as well.

Sorry, I'll be starting this fall, and as far as I can tell there isn't any red hair on my head 😛

Then it's settled -- my bad! Our classmate (also lab animal, I believe) has a monkey related name on SDN as well, but I can't recall what it is as that person is rarely on here. 🙂

Maybe my morning caffeine hasn't kicked in yet, but the documents required list for our statement of legal residency seems a bit oddly worded... it says to have the list of documents if you aren't a California resident, have recently arrived, etc., but doesn't have a list of documents for California residents. Has anyone else made a bit more sense out of what we need?

I had to fill one of those out to establish residency when I was starting graduate school here. I was originally classed as a nonresident for some reason (probably my super late admission) and had to bring them a copy of my lease, my drivers license, a dated letter from my bank saying that I established an account, my voter reg card and a ballot stub from the most recent election. I'm not sure in what circumstances you need that stuff, but whatever the case I was switched to resident status afterwards. My best guess is that if you went to high school here, your parents lived here, you've never had a license in another state, etc, then you're probably good to go with just filling out the form and only need to provide docs if they request it. Otherwise (you moved to CA within the last couple of years or whatever) I'd probably gather up some stuff just to be on the safe side.

edit: also it doesn't seem like we (graduate/professional students) should fill out the online one but the checklist says to do the online one so I don't get it. It won't let me skip the part that says to skip if you're over 24.

I thought we didn't need to start filling out any forms until we receive our ID numbers in "late May." Am I already falling behind???

haha no, don't spaz. I just clicked the link and checked it out because I already have an ID number as a current student. I believe Fall registration for undergrads just started, so don't worry about it one bit.

heyo. i checked online and it says we need to file by june 15, and there's also a list on the website of what documents you need although nyanko pretty much listed them all: http://registrar.ucdavis.edu/html/slr.html#docs . they're all pretty easy to get, but it wouldn't hurt to get them now just in case something goes wrong.

on an unrelated note, i'm goin up this weekend to hopefully find some housing. hoot hootums

I wouldn't worry too much about those deadlines. They were definitely amended for our class as it took longer than expected to get us some pieces of information (such as ID numbers).

that's good...i was worried about the timing of the ids/deadline bc i may be out of the country around then. thanks pomona! :luck:

I am a non-resident but hoping to get residency after my first year. I am a little confused now about when I will need to show them my lease, new driver's license, etc., since I am not applying for this fall, but for next fall. That would be next summer, right? I'm planning to meet with someone once I'm out there to make sure I have my ducks in a row, but that doesn't mean I can't start obsessing now. 😉

It's part of what makes me such a great procrastinator. Instead of worrying about the 4 finals I have in the next week, I'm thinking about something I can't even do anything about for months. 😀

I am going through this process right now, and I recommend you get your driver's license and voter registration as soon as you get out here. You will need to have that a full year before you can petition for residency status (ie a full year before classes start in fall of 2011). California makes you take a written test (multiple choice) but no behind the wheel to get a license.

The forms I just filled out are required to be submitted no later than the registration fee payment deadline for the quarter for which you apply for residency (this year it is 9/16). In addition to filling out the forms, they want a copy of your DL, voter registration, car registration, loan documentation, tax returns, bank accounts, lease for the 2010-2011 school year, arm, leg, and first born child. 😛

It is really not that bad, it just takes a while to get everything together. I do recommend brushing up on the CA driving laws becuase they are very different from the East Coast 😉. Good Luck!

What's that, the simultaneous speed by 15 mph, honk, change lanes without signaling, and flip someone off isn't allowed in Davis? 😀 (I don't flip off people out of self-preservation, even when I really want to, and I use my turn signals, but I've learned to be a pretty aggressive driver to survive in D.C. rush hour.)

Thanks, glad to know in ahead of time what I'm up against. How crowded are CA DMV's? Things have actually improved here and it was only a 45 minute wait last time I had to renew my DL. I already promised my first-born child, do you think they will accept my second-born? Long story involving that or my soul. 😉 😛 :d

The Davis DMV can be either really bad or really good depending on when you go. I went on a really hot June day, on a Thursday (or some other work day) at about 2pm and there was a short (10min) wait. But there have been other times where there are no parking spots available, the line is out the door, and your wait is 2 hours. It's worth it to do a quick drive by first to see if it's crowded, and if it is then to come back some other time. And if you're really nice to the ladies, chat with them and ask about their nails, they'll be nice and tell some funny jokes and make you smile. 🙂

Don't forget that at the CA DMVs you can make appointments online ahead of time and avoid virtually all waiting! Best system ever! Sure beats the way things are back in my home state!

See there, you would already miss one question. Despite people driving like bats out of hell and flying across five lanes of traffic in under 5 seconds, you do not legally need to use a turn signal when changing lanes.😱 It is simply recommended.

Hm, actually, I just looked up MD law, and it is NOT required here (guess I really remember my driver's ed, huh? 😳 ), but it IS required in VA. Guess it's just as well that I figured it was, since I drive in VA all the time.

Wow, appointments? That's awesome.

RE: class stats, I don't remember what I put, either. It's a bit weird that they separated teaching/academics and research, although maybe they were thinking clinical academic vs. research academic (and research could also be in industry). I might have been equine, LA, academics, or research.

Holy cow, less than 4 months left and then we will be in vet school! 😀
How crazy and exciting is that?? We have all worked so freaking hard to get to this point and now vet school is just around the corner!
Disclaimer: I'm a bit excited and time isn't flying by quickly enough! 😛

For anyone who was also an undergraduate at UCD, what are you getting when you try to fill out our SLR? I tried using my current username and password for ucd to see if I could get a head start of my form, and after signing in from the registrar's page for the slr form it tells me that my "fees will be assessed as a legal resident." I haven't filled out the form as a vet student, only as an undergraduate, and I wasn't aware that it carried over... anyone else getting the same thing?
Thanks!
