I got in. Cannot stop crying. See you all next year.

Wow, looks like a lot of good news is coming in today. Way to go eireannach, badcats, Roy, Soyjoy, ekchad! Hope it's only good news from here on out for everyone.

ekchad - I have the same option with Purdue and Davis, it's not even a question for me that Davis wins. Again that's for me, beyond that it's your decision to make. I know a lot of people suggest making pro/con lists and comparing the two schools...

Congrats guys!!!!!!

Lots of cool people coming this fall! We're totally going to have to have a nerdtastic SDN party before the retreat.

Got my good news a little while ago!

There are some prereq issues that I totally was not expecting but I'm sure I'll get them sorted out or, at worst, take some classes over the summer. I still can't believe it, and I can't wait to meet everyone!

Just to clarify, I meant Macs are more expensive for comparable models of PC laptops, a tablet PC is way more complex/expensive than a standard laptop, which should explain the difference.

oh okay. i don't really know much about computers cept i hate vista.

congrats to everyone! 👍 :luck: 😎 i just realized that over 10% of our class is gonna be sdners. that **** is bananas

Woohoo! Got my accept e-mail today! I'm so glad I don't have to be a tech forever, though it was a very good learning experience the first 2 years or so...

Congrats to everyone who got in, and good luck to those of you on the waitlist!👍:luck:😀

Cant wait to meet you all! This is going to be a really long 5 month wait....

What can I say, SDN'ers kick butt (including CorporateFatCat and everyone who didn't get in this year but WILL get in next year!). 😀

Yayyyy! I can't believe we're going to vet school!

Edited to add more exclamation points because I'm still in shock.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am out of my mind excited to meet all of you!

Congratulations everyone 😀!!!!!

Now to occupy a summer with no money and no job... im thinking waitress by night and beach bum by day?.... dont think unemployment pays soon to be students. Drat.

Congrats everyone!! I can't wait to meet all of you..

All the hard work paid off for us 😀😀 Let's all try to enjoy this summer - we totally deserve it!

I'm not sure if everyone heard back... if not, tomorrow is a new day so GOOD LUCK! 👍 :xf:

Hey everyone!

I got the email yesterday at 5:34 PM Central Time. I was intending to post immediately, but by the time I talked on the phone/cried/celebrated with friends, I suddenly realized it was 1:00 AM!

I am SO excited to meet you all next year. SDN has been a wonderful support and network, and it makes me so happy to know I am going to have the most awesome classmates! 😍

I'm not sure if everyone has heard by now (I certainly feel like I was last on the planet to know 🙄), but good luck if there are any stragglers still out there. Also, good luck to those on the waitlist :luck:

Eventualeventer-I'm so impressed! Being accepted OOS is like hitting the lottery. Congrats!

Congrats everyone that got in yesterday!!!!!! yay!!!!!

I don't think I have come down from the cloud I have been on since Friday. I am in the land of torment right now. CSU is amazing and cheaper, but I'm pretty sure my heart is in Davis.

congratulations eventualeventer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the head's up, Nyanko. I was one of the last to hear I got in, and probably one of the first to complete the form 😀

So uh, is anyone who likes cats, is dogless, who showers and uses deodorant, doesn't leave the dishes in the sink for days, and won't leave gross hairballs in the bathroom looking for a roommate? I'm going up to poke around for places in 10 days, but it's looking like a 1br would be a bit of an excessive expense for me at the moment. If anyone is interested, pm me.

I live in Davis now, so if anyone needs any help or advice about finding a house or apartment, I am happy to help!

I know it has been four days now, but I am still grinning ear-to-ear with excitement! 😀

A little off topic but I have a mac and I right-click all the time. With the Mac Book Pro you can customize your trackpad options--I prefer to use the two fingered tap as my right click. However, 90% of the time I plug in my little wireless usb mouse which has a track wheel and both right/left buttons.

If anybody wants a tour of a mac or pc, my classmates and I would be more than happy to show you our computers over coffee the next time you are in town. There are pros and cons to both systems and sometimes its best to see the differences in person. Hope this helps!

hey guys,

congrats to those who found out today! =)

now i have some questions:

do i need to send all my transcripts again? i already got my degree in 07, but took a bunch of old and new classes at different colleges. i sent all my transcripts including fall and took my last class for winter. do i just need to send winter or send everything again? i sent kim an email a few days ago, but she hasn't gotten back to me yet.

i was looking at housing (looking for 1 bedroom) and it seems to run around 1000/month..is that about right? and when's a good time to move up?

lastly about the white coat...when they say the size measurements, is this chest? it seems like we can exchange them right? lol cuz i'm not really sure what i am exactly . sorry for all the questions..i'm a bit paranoid/want to make i got everything

So I am pretty sure this was discussed last year, but does anyone know where decent housing that allows pets(two cats) and maybe a small yard for a future dog could be found around Davis? In a perfect world it would be biking distance from school, but I am pretty flexible about that part.

My experience in davis is...
A one bedroom closer to downtown will run a bit more and farther from downtown will be a bit lower, also an apartment should be a bit lower than a house. Most leases in Davis run from Sept 1- Aug 31st (really not helpful for us!), but you might be able to find or negotiate an earlier start or even sublet from the people who are currently in the place you will move in. Alternately, you might just want to stay in a hotel or sublet a place so that you can get up here before we start and then move during the crazy weekends.
Some good places to look are www.daviswiki.org for apartments, and at the local real estate agencies for house rentals, but watch out, Davis landlords are a bit on the slumlordy side!
Hope that helps!

Use Craigslist, but most likely for a place like that you'll want to look for a duplex, and probably need a roommate.

Most apartments don't allow pets (though I hear that talking to the manager might help), the two exceptions I can think of are Tanglewood (20min. bikeride from vet campus and 10 min. to downtown) and The Trees (~10min to vet campus and 20min to downtown). A good number of houses are pet friendly though and tend to have small yards.

Thanks, I think I am moving with the SO, otherwise I would be fine just getting a room somewhere. The reason I asked is because I know some places/apartments that may be pet friendly might not have the best reputation in town, yet advertise heavily. Will definitely look into duplexes though so thanks!

Ah well that makes it easier if you are planning on splitting with your SO, was just thinking it'd be a lot to pay for on your own. A 2 bedroom duplex in Davis will generally range from like, $1200-$1500/month depending on location. Essentially anywhere you are in Davis will be within cycling distance, so don't worry too much about that.

has everyone decided on labtops? i'm still undecided... i've never used a mac (i do have an iphone which is the greatest thing ever) and i've never used a tablet. i currently have a dell and hp (my hp is having screen probs so im using my dell). in general, i love pcs.

I heard that tablets are great because you can write notes and draw diagrams directly on downloaded lecture notes. i'm wondering how often this function is really used in class and how sturdy the labtop is. i tend to be a little rough with my labtops (but i plan on being very careful with this new one).

i hear that macs are stronger, more reliable and user-friendly.

i don't care too much about aesthetics.

any input would help. i know there were a few posts before but i still can't decide.. 😕

for anyone that was wondering/in the same position as me, kim said i just have to mail her courses for this academic year.

soyjoy i just put down mac (no reason except to just accept my position asap =p ) but i may change later since we have until june 1st or something like that. but i may change to the tablet depending on the input i get from people. i've never really taken notes w/ a computer before, so a tablet may be useful.

I've always had a PC, but am leaning towards the mac. I asked my brother, who is a computer programmer, which he would choose and why. He said the mac because "the mac is faster and has more ram and hard disk space... and the screen is bigger... the tablet PC has less hard disk space, really bad dvd-burner, half the memory and smaller screen... and it costs $600 more than the mac!"
Hope that helps! 🙂

thanks, jesiah. i didn't want to go through the hassle of switching later but i guess i'll just have to pick one for now. tablet it is. i'll switch later if i change my mind.

Yeah, most of what you are paying for with the tablet is the tablet functionality. I accepted my appointment today (!) and chose the tablet but might still change my mind.

I've used a tablet through graduate school and to be honest in classes I've loved it.

Congratulations to all of you who got in! You have to promise to keep the rest of us who will be re-cycling (hah! I like that) updated on what the whole experience is like.
I'm green with envy here, but have accepted that it wasn't my time yet.

First, congrats to everyone accepted!! 😀

As far as computers, I have the tablet and I love it. I will agree that the Mac is probably more reliable and faster, but I use the tablet functionality in every class and honestly don't know what I'd do without it. All of the lecture notes can be downloaded into OneNote, and then you can write on them, highlight, draw arrows/diagrams, etc. all as if you were using paper. I had never used a computer to take notes or study before, so I figured there may be an adjustment period, but it was totally fine from the beginning.

With housing, I actually think that there are quite a few apartment complexes that allow pets. I came up one weekend and only looked at places that would allow my cats and ended up seeing a ton. I currently live in South Davis, and it's pretty quiet and convenient to food, grocery shopping, downtown, and campus. I plan on staying here the entire 4 years. I was able to sign a lease in June for one year starting in July. So while getting a head start is definitely a good idea, don't be terrified that if you don't find a place now you're screwed (I had heard if I hadn't found a place by the end of March I was going to be out of luck, but there were tons of vacancies in June).

If anyone has any more questions feel free to PM me. Congrats again!! 🙂

I just put my name down for a mac. The idea of a tablet sounds really cool but I can't imagine actually using it to takes notes during class, call me old fashioned but I'd much rather write on paper. Although it would be nice to add comments, diagrams, etc. on slides. The tablet just doesn't seem worth the extra dough, maybe some current students could add some input (I know a couple have already!).

jjohnston, I didn't see your reply until after I posted. The adjustment period is what I'm worried about, sounds like it might not be an issue.

The only problem is that I don't think anyone really takes notes on paper. Those with Macs still use their computer, they just type as opposed to writing on the tablet. Carrying around all of the printed out notes to be able to write on them seems unrealistic to me, as there are TONS. But if you can't imagine using the tablet function, definitely get the Mac since it's cheaper.

thanks jjohnston. i agree that tablets will come in handy. nyanko, what are you going to do with your old tablet? was it required for your masters prog? just curious.

Thanks for the input so far on Purdue vs Davis. Still haven't decided so I've taken up the roomie's idea to post two posterboards with benefits/negatives of each!

On the laptop front, I've talked to a few current Davis students all three who have the PC and wish they would have gone the Mac way. Granted this is a biased sample (all roommates) so I wouldn't take it as representative, something else they noted was that you can buy a Bamboo (?) pad for the Mac if you want to have the ability to write.

Yeah, my opinion is that if you aren't planning on using the tablet function, definitely go with the Mac. The only issue with the plug in tablet for the Mac is that you aren't writing *directly* on the slides. You're looking at the slide on your screen, and over to the side you're writing on a blank tablet, so it's not as easy to write exactly where you're intending to... if that makes any sense whatsoever. But I haven't actually tried it, so hopefully someone with a Mac and the plug in tablet will chime in.

Spring Break is wonderfully boring, can you tell? Haha.

can you think of any disadvantages of owning the tablet? such as wear and tear of the screen from all the writing? (?)

I actually have not noticed any wear and tear on the screen from writing. And I take notes on it all day long in every class. The only disadvantage is that it's not as stable as the Mac. OneNote crashes from time to time; fortunately it automatically saves everything so I never lose any work. But it is annoying. I have been lucky to not have any crashing/other issues with the computer itself, but I know that others in my class have. Also, my touchpad is not perfect, and scrolling is not always smooth. And there's wear and tear on the left mouse button already, but so far it hasn't affected it's functionality.

Overall, I'm really pleased with my decision to go with the tablet and haven't regretted it at all. If anyone wants to see a demo over coffee while they're in town, as shelterURIgirl suggested, just let me know.

Did you guys upgrade to Windows 7 this year on your tablets? Because that might be a pretty big difference; Windows 7 is better than Vista and more stable, as far as I have seen.

I will be attending a different school in the fall (Auburn), but the tablet/mac discussion is interesting to me. Exactly what type of tablet are y'all using. Auburn is going to require it's students to use a tablet starting with our class. Unfortunately, they have not given us any details about which one yet. I was just curious to know anyone's thoughts on the various brands.

I have a quick, non-admissions related question. A small group of friends and I might be coming up for Picnic Day next month, and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for a hotel to try to book? Somewhere sort of near campus would be nice, but we're going to be driving up so anything within about about a half hour drive of campus should work. We did the same thing last year and stayed in Elk Grove (I think), but other suggestions would be awesome!

Thanks!
