whats the scoop on UC Irvine's program? The website has dated information. any comments?

The scoop is that it is a strong So Cal program. Very resident friendly. Home call q5 weeks as a PGY2. No call PGY3 year. PGY4 class takes home call as well. Attendings are great.

As a PGY2, there are five blocks to rotate through. 2 blocks at the Long Beach VA for inpatient, 1 block at LBVA for outpatient clinics, and 2 blocks at UCI for inpatient. As a PGY3, you spend the entire year doing outpatient at the VA. As a PGY4, you split time at UCI doing consults, Long Beach Memorial for inpatient, and there is a new addition of a rotation at a local Kaiser.

The program takes 5 a year. Tons of med students rotate through and A LOT of the residents who match rotated as med students.

It is not a required rotation for UCI students. Only a VERY small number of the students who rotate through are UCI med students.

most people would hardly consider UCI a very strong program, at least not compared to the programs in the northeast. but overall it's solid, and most residents find decent jobs. It's also in so. cal, which means it'll probably be more competitive to get in than the top tier schools like RIC/Kessler/Spaulding...etc. Most people that match at UCI has strong so cal ties, and mostly have rotated through UCI.
