UC Post Bacc 2013 Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi Smex, if you don't mind telling us, what do you think went wrong?

I don't think anything went wrong, I just think that the others that were interviewed were better candidates. Its competitive, if I don't get accepted anywhere this year, I'll apply next year and I'll be an even stronger candidate 🙂

If you could also give help us out with some questions they asked at the interview too that would be awesome 👍 I'm still impatiently waiting on SF, Davis, and Riverside

Same here!
What they asked me was tell me was;
1) Tell us about yourself
2) Why medicine
3) Tell us about your academics
4) Tell us about your academic struggles if any
5) What are your strengths and weaknesses
6) Have you used any student support services (I'm a UC student, LARC would be an example)
7) What leadership roles have you had
8) Tell us about an experience you had helping the underserved
9) Why do you want to be part of this post-bacc program

They asked me about 9 questions, I think these are all of them.

If it says 3 send 3!
What I did to make sure that my letters were turned in on time was I told my professors and community service director that the letters were due 15 days before the real deadline 🙂
And I constantly bothered them until they submitted them 🙂

I do not believe there an updating process. They did received a lot of applications and it does take a long time to go through each one. They are really careful about choosing the few people that do get interviewed since each accepted Post-Bac class is super small. I think you should wait it out and not agitate them. They already have your resume on file when you filled in all those questions on the application about your extracurricular activities and jobs experiences. When you do get an interview, then you can update the committee on what you been doing.

Hi, which UC said that?
I am asking wondering is they will all use email to reject and phone call to invite?
I have not heard anything from any UCs and my app was complete March 8

I had also called UCI two weeks ago and the girl that answered said the process is over but she sounded unsure so she transferred me and another woman said they are still in process for 2 more weeks. I asked her if we get emails at least letting people know they did not get in and she said " usually ". Again, she also sounded unsure. Well, its been two weeks.

Yes, they will email you if they want to interview you, and they emailed me to reject me. I'm not sure if they are still interviewing. [email protected] is the email for the postbacc program at UCI.

It is also important to note that if you were a first time applicant for UCI, then your application was due I believe feb.28 or the 27, so if it was late, they may just of have thrown it out and not bothered since they get a bunch of applications per cycle.

ayo so i interviewed @ UCD on friday (5/10) & got an acceptance phone call today! SO HAPPY! however, has anybody wiho interviewed @ UCSF got a decision yet? i'm just waiting on them. UCD gave me until this friday to give them a decision so hopefully they get back to me.

that was priority deadline , I did not know priority deadline meant deadline for first time applicants. no where in their website can i find that. how did you get that information?

hey guys quick question. im looking into applying to these programs. i missed the deadlines for this year but im nto too worried about it since it'll give me time to retake my mcat.

my question is well basically, what exactly are these post bacc programs designed to do? do they have any linkages to their respective med schools? would this route be a better one to go with than lets say doing an SMP.

thanks for all the help!

Hi bukoo! I interviewed at UCSF and received a decision from them (e-mail) 2 days after I interviewed. I hope that information helps. Congratulations on your acceptance to UC Davis! Sounds like a wonderful program.

what exactly are these post bacc programs designed to do?There are various types of post bacc programs (ie. career changers v. academic enhancers). Almost all (if not all) of the UC programs are academic enhancer programs (aka GPA booster), I believe some of the programs don't advertise it as this but require you to have completed med school pre-reqs. Please note that the UC program requires you to come from disadvantaged background. Other programs (in particular, CSUEB and SFSU) have both types of programs. So, if you come from a non-science background, these programs might be more suitable for you.

do they have any linkages to their respective med schools? In terms of linkages, some programs do not advertise it and others just have no direct linkage whatsoever. If you read Nmim's post above, she mentioned that UCSD has conditional acceptances for approx. 4 of their postbacc students. Though reading UCSD's website would tell you that there is no direct linkage. I suggest reading a couple threads from previous years and you'd find that these programs have a high success rate; even if you do not matriculate at their respective MD program, you WILL eventually attend another MD/DO program.

would this route be a better one to go with than lets say doing an SMP.
Only you can judge this for yourself as everyone's experiences and successes vary. If you provide us some of your digits (GPA/MCAT), we may be able to help you more with this.

Thanks for the response.

my cum gpa is 3.0 (BA in Bio) and my 1st mcat attempt was a horrid 21 (7P 5V 9B) which im planning on retaking this upcoming July/August.
i dont know if im exactly an URM but i am an immigrant to this country and my family has had its fair share of struggles, but i am Asian Indian so that wouldnt make me a minority i suppose.

im deciding if i should go the post bacc route or apply for smp's. ill most likely apply to both programs this upcoming Jan. but any and all advise is appreciated. i would preferably like to stay in CA but only smp ive seen here is the USC global medicine program.

thanks again for at the help!

I thought I saw it in the UCI postbacc website, but you are right it does say priority deadline, but I do believe I read somewhere thought that if you were a first time applicant for UCI, your application was due in late February. I do not know, but you should definitely email them if you are worried about your status, I got responses within 24 hours.

Hi all just some info:

I submitted all my applications on March 15 (the last day to be considered for UCI)

I interviewed at UCSF, UCI, UCD.

For my acceptances I found out right away!

Good Luck to all!

Are you going with Davis? 🙂

How soon is "right away"? I had my interview at UCSF this past Wednesday. They said they are going to have a committee meeting and will notify everyone on June 3rd. BLEHCK! I hate waiting! Torture!

I had my interview with UCSF last Wednesday and they said they have a committee meeting every Friday so they can let people know after each meeting but the last day for a response is June 3rd. Hope that helps! I haven't heard back but I guess no news is still good news :/

i interviewed april 25th, wednesday at ucsf and haven't heard anything.. i thought my interview went bad and noticed a few SDN ppl on here that have gotten acceptances. due to the limited positions in the program (8?), my chances are probably done right? sorry for being neurotic but i was born and raised in sf and would love to stay in the city.

I feel the same, heart1. They are accepting 12 people this year into their program. The chances seem slim for us at this point and I think they are just keeping us on a long waitlist while they look for more people who are better fit for the program. I assume they are just waiting to send out rejection letters all at once. I'm from the city too and UCSF was my top choice, not to mention, they are the only ones to offer me an interview so far.

Best of luck to you though!

Currently yes. When I started the post bac application, those two were my top 2 choices. If I get into UCSF I probably will go there instead. But the decision (if I have that luxury) will be kinda hard to make cuz I like the attitude of the administration at UCD, & the fact that it's way more centralized than UCSF. The only thing UCSF has over Davis (in my eyes) is the prestige associated with that name. Not to take anything from UCD, but UCSF is one of those super, super elite top tier schools.

Hello,

I am still looking to share an apartment with other UC Sun Daygo postbacc students, so please feel free to private message me if you are also looking for a roommate (male or female, no preference). Program starts in June, so I hope to hear from my colleagues soon! Ty! 😀

If you can please provide some ideas in how to find roommates/apts, feel free to message me! Thanks.

Does anyone know if UCD is still giving out interview invites or are they done with that? I looked at last year's thread and it seemed like they were giving them out into early June...Also anyone know about how many spots are there for the program at Davis? Thanks a bunch, and congrats to those already accepted!!!

yeah, I called UCD today and they said they're still reviewing applications and will be interviewing possibly until the first week of June. she said the first track starts on June 24th.

It says on their website that "participation is limited to twenty students". They will accept fifteen students into their traditional track--summer program and academic year program. An additional five students who already have competitive MCAT scores will be accepted to participate in the academic year program only. I know this site is for their 2012 class.... so did they change the amount of spots to fill in for their 2013 class?

correction: 20 spots. 5 for ppl who already have mcat scores, 15 for those who don't.

So, do you know the average MCAT scores for UC postbacc students? The 2 months MCAT summer component seems rushed. It sounds like it's a recipe for burnout and I'm wondering how students typically do. Thoughts?

After I was done applying back in Jan, I started doing my own studying. I didn't think studying for 2 months w them would be enough. So the other ppl going into this have prolly done their own studying prior to entering. At least that's what I think. But I know some have even already taken the MCAT.

so should we be expecting to hear back from UCSF, Davis, and UCR by tomorrow the latest? It's June 3rd tomorrow, and I still havent heard back from any school for an interview. Is there any hope left?

I think UC Davis still has one more interview day on June 4th so I doubt tomorrow is the last day for them to send out decisions. Hang in there. 🙂

Do you think that is the last interview day, given program start is fast approaching? Thanks!

I just got an email from UCSF, putting me on the waitlist. :/ I'm guessing UCSF is done interviewing, but not sure about the rest of the UCs.

yea..I got a rejection for interview letter form UCSF today, still no word on UCD. I guess it was my fault for not getting all my documents in until April 10th. Note to self for future: Apply earlier and ask for LORS to be sent EVEN EARLIER

congrats to all who got accepted!!

Yea my LOR and transcripts didn't even get in the system til after April 10th.... bleh. dang snail mail.

Hello,

Can anyone share what interview questions you were asked, and if it was a panel? Thanks! 🙂

Today I just received a call today from UCR for an interview for next week and I am not a UCR student. I was actually rather shocked that I got a call because it is already so late into the process. Since I interviewed for UCD on April 30th. They mentioned that the interview would be next Monday, Tuesday and the program starts at the end of the June which is a fast turn around time. So there is still hope for UCR is concerned. Also, I heard that Davis is wrapping up interviews this week too.

I cross my fingers for you! Good luck!!!!

Hi guys,

I'm kind of torn between the 2... I was admitted to both postbac programs and have a hard time choosing so maybe you guys can weight in!

I was born and raised in San Francisco and I love my city, my family and friends are here and I can live at home and the campus is just a 10 minute drive so I can save a substantial chunk of change right there. It would cost be about $15,000 to attend SFSU.

However, during my UCD interview, I felt very comfortable and relaxed. The environment and people there were really helpful and showed what kind of program it really was. The cost to attend would be about $25,000.

I understand that UCD has a school of medicine and is more reputable, but aside from that, is there anything else? I've researched into both schools and they have a similar success rate and program structure. Any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hey all,

To start, I would like to congratulate those who have been accepted to post-baccalaureate programs! YOU'RE GOING TO BE A DOCTOR! But remember to take it one step at a time... I find myself thinking way too far into the future and losing sight of the present. For those still waiting to hear back, don't doubt yourselves and don't ever give up! We are all in this for the long-haul, right? I was surprised to get a call from UC Riverside on Monday morning for an interview, so all the pieces aren't in place yet—you may have a spot waiting for you!

I am so very grateful for the opportunity to be at UCSF starting this summer for their pre-medical post-baccalaureate program. Any chance any of you will be there too? We only just got the information about housing and start times; it's been feeling like a really fast transition, but I'm not complainin'! I'd love to be able to coordinate bringing housewares (dishes, flatware, pots & pans, etc.) for our assigned apartments, talk about what classes you're interested in taking, or just blabber about how excited we are. Please feel free to PM me!

P.S. Please don't feel discouraged about submitting your application on the last day. I submitted on April 10 in the last hour AND they didn't receive my transcript until the 17th (even though I requested it, literally, three times from my university!). I think they will always take the time to carefully review everyone's application because they're good people like that. Best of luck to all of you!
