I found this to be an interesting read. Apparently UCR is adamant about creating a medical school. So much so, that they regrouped and found other means of funding it after last year's rejection. They said they are trying to add a 2013 class. So this cycle applications will open for their new class of 50, right? I wonder if AMCAS will go for that, considering that the application season has already started and I don't believe I saw them listed.

Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone happened to have any updates on this situation.

That would be awesome for late applicants though! But I'm scared on whether it'd be a good school to go to after all these complications... seems fishy.

+1.

In the article it says Merced is trying to open a medical school as well, but in 15 years. I wonder why UCR is in such a rush.

UC Merced? No Thanks

UC Riverside? No Thanks

Being from Cali and applying to all the UCs (except Davis), I'd rather go out of state than go to UCR or UCMerced med school lol.

Why??

UCR would be considered an American MD Medical School, right? Not to mention being in California...

I am from Cali too and went to a better UC for undergrad than UCR because, yes, UCR is one of the lowest UC's to go to for undergrad, but isn't it a lot different for Medical School?

I like the idea "that UC expand enrollments at its existing medical schools before opening a new one" 😀 (and eventually opening a UCR school too)

God knows California could use some more public med schools for those of us who are 1) already in debt and 2) not pre-med rockstars...

Another Cali school opening up, and a public school no less? Sign me up!!

Still hoping that UC Santa Barbara opens up a medical school 😏

Dude, its still a UC med school. I see it as another amazing opportunity to increase my chances in staying Cali.

The west coast needs more med schools, so I don't see why it's such a big deal to make a UC Riverside.

dear god that would be amazing. That's where I went for undergrad.

Riverside doesnt need a school. Loma Linda has one and its only 10 miles away.

This is a crap bill of goods being promoted by idiot politicians who think that having a new med school will bring in "millions" in economic activity to the region. LMAO they also think they're actually going to pull in significant grants from the NIH. What a joke!

it said in the newspaper that they fill focus on family care, pediatrics, psychiatry and will shy away from most specialties.

what does that mean? they won't do rotations in all specialties?

Yes they will do rotations in all specialties, but they're not going to have an academic medical center which means you will have to do away rotations in Los Angeles or another large city in order to get them.

This is really a political talking point and nothing more. The local politicians running this thing have to say its a "primary care based" school because if they dont, they know the politicians in Sacramento wont support it. Why should a budget crunch state like California spend millions of dollars for more plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills?

i actually want to go to ucr med in contrast to many in this thread. it's 20 minutes from the my home in OC, and being in the pioneer class of a medical school would be awesome.

The problem here is not the quality of the school. It's the fact that it's in ****ing riverside. I understand completely.

^hahahaha. Agreed, they're kind of my "rival" school but at the end of the day, I want to go to med school and would love to stay in CA.

Being from Cali, I'd rather go to med school in the middle of the desert or Bakersfield than this damn rock.

LOL if you would actually choose the Carribean over a med school in Riverside......its still a med school in Cali

Even if they did open soon, wouldn't they need to wait until next cycle to begin taking applications? I don't see it likely that they would start in the middle of the cycle.

When FAU opened, they started and ran late. We're talking like last year (or was it the year before that) at that..

I say the UC Regents should file a motion to set demolition to the entire UC Riverside campus and distribute the remaining funds/leftovers to the rest of the UCs.

All in favor say AYE

Well, UCR does have the (very competitive) UCR/UCLA program where students do 2 years at UCR and go to UCLA for clinicals. So I think it's just a matter of finding hospitals to affiliate with. I was hoping they would've opened up the school last cycle so I could apply there. It may be in Riverside, but I'll take that over the midwest any day.

There was a professor from UCSD who wrote to the UC regents asking for this to happen.
