This is a thread for everybody who is going to UCC this fall. Anybody who has questions or comments about the school can direct them here. Looking forward to meeting all of you this September! I'm from Vancouver, Canada.

Hello. Sent in my deposit the other day. I'm from NYC. This should be an intense and interesting journey, we are all partaking on. I have never been to Ireland. Also, I've been praying for the value of the Euro to decline or the european union economy to crash! every tiny cent counts!:luck:

I just accepted my offer for the GEP program, though im gonna wait an see if any other schools grant me an offer. Currently wait-listed at RCSI :S anyways.... Im from Vancouver too!

I've accepted my UCC offer as well. I did my undergrad in Toronto, but I'm originally from Hong Kong. I've never been to Ireland either, and I'm pretty convinced this is going to be an amazing experience. =) Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Does anyone have advice on accommodation? I think I'll live in student residences the first year, then possibly move out after that. Any other general tips on what to bring/what to expect etc would be appreciated as well. Cheers!

The thing that confused me about student residences is that our class schedule doesn't match with the lease term for the accommodations. I have yet to call anyone about it though.

also it would probably be in the best interest for North American students to live in similar areas just because we will all be going through similar processes in the next 4 years.

You could email them. On a previous thread people said that most of the North Americans lived at Sheares Gate. It is affiliated with the University but not owned by them.

It looks pretty nice and it says that early check-in is available.

I just submitted my application and deposit for Dennehy's Cross =) It's a little closer to campus than Sheares Gate and is also just for post-grads. Their lease term lasts from September to August. (http://www.ucccampusaccommodation.com/student_terms.cfm)

Hopefully see a bunch of you there!

Still trying to decide between Sheares Gate and Dennehy's Cross.. I wonder where most of our fellow GEP students will be because I want to be with the rest of the group.

Hey! I'm going to be in the GEP program as well. Been living in Montreal for the last 5 years, and was in Florida before that. Looking forward to meeting you guys.
As for living, I'm also leaning towards staying in a residence over a single apartment next year. I'd definitely like to end up living with other people in the GEP. So either Sheares or Dennehy's, which appear about equal. free internet, less neighbors, and a fireplace vs. a convenience store, a dishwasher, and less roomates, respectively.

My friend who is a current UCC student said that ~80% of the North Americans doing GEP live at Sheares . Hope that might help some of you make a choice. I am leaning toward Sheares for this reason.

I was leaning towards sheares, but this worries me...

but then, how reliable are forums anyways 😛

Some of their complaints are pretty trivial in my opinion.

Here is what I found someone said on another thread.

It depends on what your preferences are. The majority of my North American classmates lived in the same post-graduate housing complex called Sheares Gate. They're pretty nice but they're not cheap, and you will have to live with 3 other people, usually other members of your class but you may live with upper years or Dentistry students as well. Also, they're not close to the city centre whatsoever and it's about a 40 minute walk to get there. They are pretty close to campus, and you can get to Brookfield (which is the Health Sciences building where you'll spend most of your time) in 5-10 minutes walking. Most of my classmates who lived there this year are bailing and finding houses for next year, as you're paying a lot for what you get (ie: no control over roommate selection, forced to live with 3 other people, far from town/restaurants/pubs/clubs/anything good).

Another option is Dennehy's Cross, which is also a post-graduate apartment complex. Personally, I think it's nicer than Sheares Gate, you will live with either 1 or 2 other roommates and it's about the same distance or shorter to Brookfield. Another handy thing is that it's located above a Tesco Express (Tesco is the major grocery store), so you can get a whole bunch of your groceries without going 10 feet from your apartment, and if there's anything the Tesco Express doesn't have, it's not a far walk to the big Tesco store or Cork University Hospital (where you will also be spending a significant amount of time). Cost to live at Dennehy's Cross works out to be about 500 euro a month on a 12 month lease, while Sheares is about 550 a month.

Option C is to find a house/apartment. This can get tricky since you likely won't know anyone to live with, leaving you to find a place on your own. I'm currently living on my own in the city centre, and it's definitely not cheap. A 2 bedroom apartment in the centre will run around 700-900 euro a month, excluding electricity (water is free...for now). However, it's really handy having everything around you, grocery stores are close, the market is a 5 minute walk, pubs are everywhere, you don't have to take a taxi home after a night out. The walk to campus is the only thing that's a pain, it's about 25 minutes walking fast, uphill, to Brookfield from my apartment, nearly an hour to the Cork University Hospital.

Personally if you know people coming with you, or someone who's already here, find a place in between campus and the city centre. It'll be cheaper and you'll know who you're living with. Option B is a toss-up between Dennehy's Cross and Sheares Gate. None of my North American classmates lived in Dennehy's Cross this year, just a few Irish but I will be moving there for next year, and there will be a couple more North Americans there as well. So if you want to live with people who have the same accent as you, go to Sheares Gate, if you don't have a preference, go to Dennehy's Cross.

Still probably will go for Sheares. Its only 50 euros more per months anyways, pretty small difference.

Thanks, that's helpful! I'm happy sticking with Dennehy's Cross after reading that. Haha if I end up being that one lonely Canadian at Dennehy's, Sheares is just a short walk away... plus I hear the Irish are pretty cool 😉 At the end of the day guys, I'm pretty sure we're all going to have an awesome time whichever res we end up at. See you all in Ireland! =D

True, looking forward to meeting you guys!

Just paid the deposit for Sheares. Someone can start a facebook group if they want.

Made my deposit there the other day as well. So when are you guys heading out to Cork? I want school to start asap and to get into the swing of things.

Haha I'm excited to start too, but I'm going to enjoy my summer first! I'm planning on doing some travelling around Toronto (Montreal, NYC etc), then heading home to Hong Kong, then Ireland sometime in early August. I'm hoping to settle in Cork a little, then travel around Europe a bit before we get down to school. =)

I am spending the next few months working on some of my hobbies since I figure that I won't have much time for them once schools begins. Also planning to travel in a couple months to possibly visit family in Austria and Israel. I think I will go to cork maybe a week before school starts.

Hey,

Is anyone here going into Dentistry in 2012? I just accepted my offer.

Solid plans guys; definitely gonna try to enjoy the last few months of freedom myself and do a little travelling. Do you guys think that we will get any more mail from UCC, in terms of school scheduling, textbooks. etc anytime soon? I'm probably being a little over anxious considering school's about 5 months away. Also, so far seems like there are about 5 people, including myself, attending UCC in this website. Feel free to message me so we can add each other on facebook.

We are your Peer Support Leaders - students in a mix of years who volunteered to answer any questions you have, and help you integrate into this new program and new stage of your life. Feel free to contact us with any questions, that's what we're here for. We've put together a Facebook group (that is currently mostly empty, but it is May) so feel free to join this. We'll be emailing you with more information into the summer months.

This group is for you. This is your forum to talk about school, debate the merits of different accommodation options, discuss adjusting to a new city, country, or continent, share links and videos, plan events, and support each other through your four years studying medicine in Cork.

Hey everyone,

I'll also be heading to UCC in the fall (for dentistry). Anyone looking for private housing that wants to split a 2 or 3 bedroom place? My girlfriend is coming with me so I'm not sure if university housing is a possibility.

Is anyone from Canada or USA heading to UCC for dentistry?? .. Im currently on the waitlist

Hey, yeah I'm from Canada going into UCC dentistry.
Good luck on the waitlist!
