Hi Everybody!

Ok, so I received a housing application for UCD's glenomena residence. Have any other UCD 1st-rounders filled this puppy out? There hasn't been much action on the board here lately so I'm just curious what the status is of the others who have been accepted so far.

Cheers,
Jocks

hey,

if you got glenomena you're lucky. what you should ALL know about res here is that the buildings are basic concrete, no insulation so you will be cold and any money you put into heating basically goes out the windows. glenomena is nice because everyone has their own bathroom, it's much newer than merville (the res most people get) and it has wireless internet access. merville has no web access. you could always pay ot have it installed in your room, if you have a lot of money to burn by all means. glenomena's kitchen is unique in that you don't have an oven. you get a microwave, small bar fridge, which is interesting for 5 people, and a stove top. no oven.

I haven't received an application yet, but I contacted the Atlantic Bridge Office a couple of weeks ago to ask about housing and they told me that I could go on-line and apply right away before I was mailed anything. So I did that. Glenomena as well (Atlantic Bridge is apparently reserving Glenomena spots for us).

No word back on anything yet.

I filled out my application and put in my deposit more than a week ago. Just go to their website and pay by credit card.

Hey, UCD has a new block of residences being built - Roebuck Hall (not to be confused with the old Roebuck Castle residence). It's exactly like Glenomena. Still under construction and will be ready by September, so it'll be perfectly new when you move in. Looks totally different from the other residences - more like a modern apartment block. If you're opting to stay in Glenomena, consider it! Just to let you all know...cheers1

From the web site pictures, I think it actually looks nicer. I went with Glenomena because Atlantic Bridge told me to choose it. I also think that classes are moving to Belfield this coming year, so living on the same campus is probably a good thing.

The website pictures on the new Roebuck Hall page aren't those of Roebuck Hall..the clock tower's from Roebuck Castle and the interior is from Glenomena. Glenomena's definitely nicer than Merville or Belgrove, quieter cos the students there are more mature and it has beautiful pathways, plus you get an ensuite 😀 It has a really good Wifi coverage but you can forget about using it to kazaa and stuff cos of the dumb proxy server thing. And yep staying on campus is definitely the first choice as everything has moved to Belfield except for the dissections..don't know if the dissections are still gonna be held in Earlsfort Terrace next year though

just to play devil's advocate as someone who lived in merville in first year, while its great that most things have moved otu to belfield and you'd be close to that, bear in mind the buses stop very early at night (11:30 or 12), and after that yuo're taknig cabs back from town...i mean it was nice to live out there and that was even having ot commute into town everyday...but you are very isolated and it really knida sucked. dublin is a much better city and way more fun place to be now that i live closer to town. just something to bear in mind.

Sorry, it was Proby House that looked nicer than Glenomena, not Roebuck Hall.

Are there any places to hook up a laptop for wired internet? For online banking.

Badkarma's spot on on the bus thing!

Who MD: Proby's in Blackrock, and I must admit it does look really nice in the pictures! But unless you're willing to commute to Belfield for classes every day ....(and every once a week or so to Earlsfort Terrace..)

Arb: There's Wifi access on almost all the buildings in campus, ir not all. Glenomena has good wifi. Some parts of Merville get the wifi signal, but some parts don't. ámnot reallyy sure about roebuck castle and Belgrove. You shouldn't worry about Wifi access if you're staying in Glenomena. If you're laptop has to be hooked up manually to access the internet, there are places for that; you can refer to this http://www.ucd.ie/itservices/itucd/index.html
And for banking, even if you can't do online banking for some reason there's an AIB bank smack in the middle of campus so you can do stuff while on the way back from class or something, and there's a Bank of Ireland opposite the main entrance.

They put Proby House for my secondary choice. I don't remember selecting that...do most people get their first choice? Mr. O'Malley said that there are numerous rooms reserved for Atlantic Bridge students. The deposit was 350 Euro for everyone?

I put down a 350 Euro deposit as well.

How do you know they put Proby House as your second choice?

The confirmation email.

My confirmation e-mail has "none" for second choice.

Hey, does anyone know if the accomodation in Proby or Glenomena is mixed gender? Also do they provide cutlery? I see on UCD site that they say there's a "cutlery option"... what does that mean?

far as i know all the residences at ucd are single gender...ie only guys or girls in an apartment...but there are different genders on each floor...i had an apt of girls living across from me in merville in first year. our apt had plates, cutlery, and a few pots and pans. we still had to go out and buy a lot of stuff. but then about a month after we moved in we got a piece of paper under the door telling us to write odwn whatever we didn't have and they'd get it. so i dunno.

They don't provide cutlery. You can pay Euro 50 for a set of cutlery, pots, pans, etc. Or you can bring your own (probably best).

Hey what time is everyone moving in tomorrow? And how crazy does it usually get during move-in day?

Cheers,
Jocks

i dont' remember it being all that crazy when i moved in. just be prepared for your first taste of how disorganized things can be here. good luck.

Pretty much dead in my house. I think I'm the only one in my apartment but, I've been out a lot so I might've missed some people. Got lots done.

Saw the international advisor.
Opened a bank account
Got my blood test done
Registered
Registered for Wired access
Got some IT problems fixed
Walked to Tesco/Merrion Shopping centre and shopped for everything that I needed except for clothes hangers!!

Food tomorrow

Addition:
Traffic was terrible. The "look left/look right" warnings painted on the streets of intersections are useful! Have to get use to the left side of the road driving and the accents!
