Yeah totally agree with what Lbgem said... No one really shares food and usually you have to hid your best stuff from those grubby little undergrads! Because really GEM students are called undedrgads in name only, but we all know its a graduate program anywhere else.

Best of luck with Glenomenia, its really not that horrible. Its just that its better to be prepared than thinking its the most amazing place in the world and being depressed when you settle in 🙂

I basically am adopting the attitude that I have had terrible roommates before so I know how to handle anything that comes at me. Worst comes to worst I'll be BFF's with a spot on campus (library tends to be too quiet at me and I don't like feeling like I'm bothering people by turning a page cause it's THAT quiet). I certainly don't miss have roommates, but eh it is what it is 😛. I figure I'll give myself a year to figure out the lay of the land so to speak and so I don't have to grab an apartment last minute and hopefully get lucky with a decent landlord.

Also, fully furnished is a plus for the dorms. Having to rebuy everything again doesn't seem like a smart use of money and I'd rather not be closer to the half a million in debt mark than I have to by the end of med school. And it's always useful to find your classmates down the hall/floors if you have a question about class/etc.

I'm not expecting much 😛 so I shouldn't be disappointed. I hope that the scenery is nice around there. Any comments on places to eat around there/places to go? Or advice you wish you had been given before you got there?

Does anyone have the list of texts 1 year GEP students need?

Cheers,

A.

Yeah, def easier flying in and having a place to go. Just grab the Aircoach outside arrivals and get the one for Lepardstown. Will drop you outside UCD and then just cross bridge and head into campus (follow road to the left and you'll be able to find Glenomenia easy enough.

Campus can be quite nice but easy to get to other places from here too. Town is about 20 min bus ride, or hour walk. Tesco by St Vincents hospital for food shopping is about 30 min each way. But well worth the prices compared to Centra shop on campus. As for going out and eating/catching a film, def recommend Dundrum shopping centre. You can also take 46A bus down the road to Stillorgan for shops/cinema too. But Dundrum is like an American mall, which is rare enough here 😉

Let me know if you have any more questions, and best of luck!

The new Roebuck Castle catered hall is 12 or 13 en-suite rooms, and each room has its own private mini fridge 🙂 Since it is only 7.50 euro per day for food, I'm going to change my first choice to Roebuck. I think it would be easier as a first year to have a catered res hall. In the 2011/2012 international handbook it doesn't say anything about a mini fridge, but on the website it does...which one would be more accurate? The only down side to Roebuck catered is having 12 roommates and being in a building of first years, because I'm assuming it's going to be loud. Thanks for all of the help, kermicrzy and emighb!

Hiii. I'll be staying in roebuck castle too! so we'll prob see each other arnd. I'm hoping that each room has its own mini fridge, that'll be so much easier. the electricity amd utilities is a flat payment of 388 to cover the full 9months right?

I was wondering if anybody knows how to apply for module exemptions since depending on our first degree we might have covered something that's already quite similar. I read that exemptions have to be done prior to module registration?

Aww actually i'm not staying at Roebuck 🙁 I wanted to but it was full by the time they opened housing apps for international. how did you get a spot??? I'm staying in Glenomena now lol. and yeah, in roebuck catered res hall each room has its own fridge. that's what it says online at least.

I am going to live in the City Centre and commute. Anyone else doing this?

Do any current UCD or soon to be UCD students know if there is a 24hour study space on campus or if students have after-hour access to the libraries to study?

I just got a call from admissions here in UCD and found out I have been accepted! Now, back to this PhD 😱

I was so excited, I forgot to put it into the right thread. I apologize 🙂

Grats 😛

For all the UCD people out there I just remembered something I got back in October from the intro meeting I attended. It was a schedule of all the starting and end dates for GEM program from 2011-2015 so I was going to scan it in and send it on to anyone who may be interested.

Feel free to PM me for it or send me an email at [email protected]

I think it had the dates of holidays (ie Xmas) as well. In addition I think I got schedule of what modules are on what years etc. All very informative!

Hmmm. There were spots at roebuck castle for me but none at glemenona. Haha. I applid in june. Weird. Maybe its because our student statuses are different? Im classified as international non-eu. Anyways, i know of pple wanting to transfer out of roebuck. So you could always write in to see if you can do a transfer if you really want roebuck castle. I heard its one of the newest accod that was only built last year.

I just had one small question about the information you received from UCD in relation to getting in. In addition to letter, I got a form that needs to be retured and a letter about the student health centre and the shots we have to have. But nothing else. I was just wondering if anything else was meant to be given out, like information for registration or introduction stuff. I assume they wouldnt send it out till after we accept, but I just wanted to double check!

Thanks again 🙂

Hii. Thats all the forms you will get for now. Once you accept, the uni will send an acknowledgement letter with your ucd student number. With this number you would be able to log in to the ucd sis website and register for accommodation. Most of the introductory information about the school, course, accommodation etc can be found on the ucd website. The 2011 information booklet can be viewed on the ucd international students link on their website. Hope that helps.

Yeah it's pretty new. I'm classified as non-eu also, I live in the US. Wow it didn't even bring up the option of roebuck and i did mine on june 8th or whenever the first day was! I think i'll just stick with glenomena, i'll have 5 roommates whereas in roebuck I think it said you have 12 roommates. Glenomena is pretty recent too, but it's so far away from the health sci bldg and the library :l

Er really? I looked at the campus map and it seemed to be a 5-10 min walk to class. I'm also in Glenomena btw.

I've never actually been to the campus lol so I'm not sure how long it would take. It was on the opposite side when I looked at a map. I think there are other people who lived in Glenomena, I'm sure they would know how far it is.

Yeah that sounds about right, but its not too bad. Most of the way is covered so you wont get too wet.

Quick question - orientation week. Do I absolutely need to be there on the first day or no? I got my time zones mixed up and booked the flight so that I will be arriving early Tuesday morning instead of Monday. At this point it'd cost a bit of money to change it, so if it's not super crucial to be there on Monday I'd rather not change it. What would I be missing on Monday? Thanks!

The only thing going on Monday 5th is campus accommodation opens. Loks like most events are from Wednesday on. Wouldnt see it to be a problem, but you can always give the school office a ring (+353 1 716 6686)

EDIT: For UCD info this site is the best for email and numbers

Thanks. I did email - they said it was important that I go for "valuable information in relation to study skills and module choice." So I wasn't sure if that was the generic response or super important that I go.

Thank you for the input!

Ok so I think the medical students (6 yr) orientation is on Wednesday, but so is the international student orientation. Do you know how that's going to work out? And how far is Glenomena from the library and health sci bldgs, like are they all relatively near each other?

Oh right, so we start to get intro meetings before the Wednesday then?
Cheers!

No idea. I don't have the schedule. It's the response I received from the UCD Info desk, which I am guessing a work-study/student replied to. If you guys are saying meetings on Wed then most likely. It just seems weird they would start putting orientation stuff on Monday when everyone is moving in 😵, at least that's what I'm hoping 😛. Hence me asking you guys!

I'm kinda wondering when we'll get the registration/class schedule/etc.

Ah right, sorry was just double checking. Thanks!

Just throwing a question out there.

When you guys posted your tuition payment for this year, did anyone deduct the EUR4,444.00 we paid as a deposit to hold our seat? Or should we be transferring the full EUR39,200.00 amount.

Also, did everyone just pay via money wiring through the bank (just like we did to transfer the deposit) or has anyone tried to pay via https://ucd.studentfees.ie/ and the Pay-to-Study method.....

I can't seem to find anywhere online in the UCD system that tells me the exact balance owed....

Aside from that, congrats to all those accepted and see you in the Fall 🙂

A.

EDIT: I just got a response from ABP Offices:

"The amount due should be the tuition amount minus your deposit already paid (so your balance due would be 34,756 euros)

For a smooth transaction, please use the same method you used to pay your deposit."

I was thinking about that as well, but yesterday I simply deducted the deposit from the 39,200 and wired it. I haven't gotten any response from the school yet, but I'm sure it's all good.

I'm not sure if you decided to do rez or not, but I saw that the first payment is due on the 5th of September. I'm sure this is a fee that can be paid through the online payment method.

The program orientation schedule is out already. Basically we'll get to meet each other at the orientation meeting on 7th Sept, Wed. For the international student orientation i think we can just select what we're interested in attending because if you look at it carefully, the stuff actually repeats. haha. like going to ikea, shopping, orienting us around the campus and helping out with the administrative stuff.

Registration for us i think starts on Thurs 1st September. I think class schedule would only be released when we've registered for our modules. =)

Somebody should try starting a facebook group or something  We can get to know each other before sch starts.

Do you know the web address of this orientation schedule?

I think the task of setting up the group is yours 😉. Let us all know when you've done it and we'll all join.

Hey,

I'm a final year student @ UCD (I'm an American / Irish citizen) went into the 6 year program. Decided to stay and do my intern year in Ireland next year. Just thought I'd open a thread to see if anyone had any questions about UCD in particular - not really stats because I don't really know many, lol, but just general things about the college / classes / hospitals / Ireland in general you might be curious about before deciding to come here.

I'm a U.S citizen, i also have citizenship in Iran. But i was thinking of applying to med schools in UK or Ireland and actually end up practicing there but i don't know the process and i heard it's hard to find a job or do anything after since I wouldn't be a EU citizen and i heard it takes 8 years or so to gain citizenship or marry someone etc.. Also, and how much cheaper are the schools down there? Would it be possible for me to study and prac down there without EU or Irish citizenship
.

Also, can you use U.S loans to pay for expenses while in Ireland and when you get an interview invite will you have to pay for the flight across the country?

I'm applying next year.
feedback would be appreciated.

Found this while browsing online. Although it mentions RCSI most of the time, the information is useful for those who may be confused on what to bring, etc. Site is made by the Canadian Irish Medical Student Association (CIMSA).

Basically if you have visited the UCD website, you will realize that there's an "incoming students 2011/12 link" on the right of the website. Once you click it, it will bring you to the website that with information for all incoming students regards to info on what to do prior to reaching ucd, registration, orientation etc. Under orientation timetable, you can select our programme code DN401.

But if you're lazy to do all that and search the website, here's a direct link below to the timetable.
<http://www.ucd.ie/incomingstudents/timetable/DN401%20Graduate%20Entry%20MedicineVer1.pdf>

Thanks you two. That was actually really helpful! Will have to read through the mountain of info when I get home from work.

Hey,

That link was extremely useful. It's still to early to register for our modules, yes?...after some looking around: "Incoming non-EU (via Online Applications) undergraduates, you can begin online registration (personal details only) on Thursday, 25 August. From Thursday, 01 September you will be able to register for modules. Login instructions are the same as those for CAO students, noted above. "

Also, my status still says n/a here...I'm assume that UCD is slowly coming around to updating everyone's status/file...is everyone's status the same at this point? https://sisweb.ucd.ie/usis/bwskalog.P_DispLoginNon

Cheers,

A.

Yeah I think so, cant tell you for def since Im registered till the 26th as PhD student. But I assume nothing opens up till the 25th.

Now I just have to decide which of the optional modules Im going to take. Dont think I need the science ones. Social anthropology looks interesting.

Anyway CAO offers out tomorrow, so now we'll soon know who our Irish counterparts joining us will be.. Say someone will setup FB group then (since I messed up completely and threw the towel in fast..)

If you want irish updates go to boards.ie under science, then health science education.

EDIT: This is the SIS site you want for module sign up etc..

Hey, I'm going to UCD next year for the 6 year program 🙂

Were you an Irish citizen before you went or did you apply while in the 6 year program? Because my dad is an Irish citizen so I was thinking of applying and doing residency there and then coming back to the US for residency. But anyways, where are you going to do your residency?

What's the best on-campus accommodation for first years- I've heard Glenomena was the best; but I may stay in the new Roebuck or Muckross residencies.

As for the classes, how was first and second year? I saw the curriculum online and it seems intense. And are the electives just like an extra class you can take? I'm still a bit confused about the elective system at UCD lol.
Thanks in advance!
Hey!
I've been accepted into the 6 year program at UCD as well! I'm surprised to see that you're going into the program this fall because I've had a lot of trouble finding other students entering the same program. I'm staying in Glenomena, in fact, ABP recommended I do. Did they say the same to you?

Just to let you know this is a very good site for helping to find out info when moving over, like getting a PPS number if you decide to get a job etc. That kind of stuff

http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/

Def has helped me out over the years!

so glad we met 🙂 yeah I think we're the only two on here who are doing the 6 yr program at ucd.

Hey guys,

Finally got round to creating the Facebook group for all of us entering ucd medicine this fall. Pretty new to that. Haha. So it's called "ucd medicine freshers 2011". So both undergrad and gem can join 🙂)) think it will serve as a more useful contact point?

Seeya there!

Um there is already a UCD grad med one set up that everyone is joining. Not sure there is much point for two. Plus all the other students (ie Irish) are on the other one anyway... Thanks for the effort tho 🙂

Ohhh. Didn't know. Hahaahaa. What's that Facebook group called then?

Ohhh. Didn't know. Hahaahaa. What's that Facebook group called then?

Search in FB under: UCD Graduate Medicine Class of 2015

That's the one I found anyways.

There's a lot of very Irish names on there. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact pretty much everyone over there is going to have an accent except a few of us...and I'm guessing I'm going to be told *I'm* the one with the accent... When I went to school here, Irish/UK accents were pretty uncommon and the people with them got a lot of attention whenever they spoke up.

Fellow students,

Just so everyone knows, phase 1 one of the registration (i.e. photo ID upload, contact info, other info...etc.) is now available online to be completed. Phase 2 (which I believe is module registration) is still unavailable.

btw, have people decided which electives they might do?

Cheers,

A.

Thanks A. And probably going with the history of Irish healthcare one.

Definitely considering that one too. I noticed that several electives are limited to those who have not taken advanced level biochem, orgo chem, etc. At the risk of sounding daft...are 3rd level courses in ireland = university / college level courses in the US/CAN?

If it is, then those how majored in science would be ineligible to choose an elective like "Molecules in Medicine" aimed at the more basic level, yes?

Thanks in advance,

A.

Trying to figure it out myself. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/moving_country/moving_to_ireland/studying_in_ireland/third_level_education.html Look under rules. Looks like third level = college for us. And I did read some of those science electives were aimed more at non-science majors. I didn't see any restrictions, but someone else who's been at UCD should comment...
