Hi,
I was just wondering, UCI SOM seems to screen for admissions, correct? On a side note, wouldn't it be financially advantageous for all schools to just give you a secondary?

My stats and gpa are not quite up to par, but I think I'm beginning to do well in the MCAT arena...and my family would really need me during these next 4 years.

Thanks for any advice.

Also, I'm taking my MCAT on July 8th, and I probably won't get my scores back till August, as it stands based on practice from AAMC, I think the most I will get is a 32 if I'm lucky. However, if I do get the secondary from UCI, would it be a good idea to retake the MCAT and perhaps study a little more and get a 35 ish?

I am so sorry for these childish "what if" questions. I'm completing my BS at UCI right now and my parents just decided to divorce. I want to be close to my kid siblings if at all possible and I literally live 30 minutes from the campus.

Yes they screen for secondaries/interviews. If you got a 32 I wouldn't retake unless you were sure of getting a 35+ on the next one. A 32 is a solid score as it is. Once you get the secondary, it would probably be too late to take another MCAT as it is. (August scores coming in, assuming you were verified before then and waiting on the test, you probably wouldn't see a secondary until late august-early september at best, which wouldn't leave you time for another MCAT.)

Just knock out your july test. Almost everyone I know with a 34+ got a secondary from UCI early in the season.

Thanks for the response and advice. I'm hoping I can get a secondary. BTW, what is the cut off for MCAT and GPA for UCI? I don't have the MSAR with me at the moment?

Thanks in advance.

Well there's no "cut off" for UCI, but the average accepted applicant stats (2009) are 32 MCAT and 3.7 GPA

Suppose I take my July MCAT and they get the scores in August, is that usually too late for UCI to send out secondaries if they are considering me.

My friend took the MCAT in July, applied to UCI SOM with a very very high MCAT score, and was interviewed by UCI SOM...I don't know his status, but at least he was interviewed. If they like you enough, they'll take you...

Good luck! (and sorry to hear about your parents! 🙁 )

There goes my dream school 🙁

keep in mind that on their website they say MATRICULANT averages are around 3.62 (I forgot the exact number but its around this, check their site) and 32. MSARs show acceptance averages-- I assume that people with multiple acceptances are on the upper end and turn down UCI, hence acceptance gpa being higher than matriculant

Hi guys,
Thanks for the info and kind words (Asyouwereatrio).

It is honestly very difficult but I hope everything happens for the best.

I would do almost anything to get into UCI SOM. If one doesn't get into UCI SOM one cycle and then decides to re-apply. How does this particular school view re-applicants? Let's assume MCAT is up to par and GPA is a little bit better than the initial application. Are they still pretty hard on you like other schools for not being "qualified" enough the first time and thus want something really substantially different in EC's as well?

Thanks in advance! 🙂

If you reapply they want to know what you did in your year off and unfortunately studying for the MCAT isn't enough. So yes, they require some substantial addition to your application from that year in the form of research or ECs.

Is this the only school you're applying to?

Hi,
I'm sorry for the late response....just hoping for a good MCAT.
