UCLA Class of 2010!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey have you MSTP guys received your revisit travel/accommodation arrangements for this weekend yet? I told them I only needed hotel, so I'm wondering if I slipped through the cracks or if nobody has heard yet.

Also, for any of you guys that are currently up in LA or are going to be there this weekend: Anyone have recommendations for something fun (read: bar) to do Thursday night and maybe want to meet up? (*cough* DrBoris and UCLAstudent *cough*)

They booked my airline tickets last week as well. I asked about the faculty visits and they said they were still busy arranging everything. I'm sure we'll get a nice email/itinerary in the next couple days. Susie and Mallory seems like they have everything under control so i trust them. I'm coming into LAX around 10:30 PM, and i know we start on Friday around 8:30AM. Hotel bar anyone? I'm sure Friday will be eventful 😀

Obviously this doesn't apply to the MudPhuds, but has anyone else received their financial aid estimate yet? Good or Bad?

Aw Blunt, how sweet for thinking of UCLAstudent and I (heh 😀 )... I might be working Thursday but Ill see what I can do... Do you MSTP peeps have a different revisit than we reg MD's do? I thought it was the same for everyone?

Yea we have another revisit this Friday, so we're all getting into LA at various times the night before. Just let me know if you've got any free time Thurs night cause it'd be fun to meet you guys! 🙂

Yeah, if you email FAO, they should get back to you very quickly. They emailed me back in the same day with my estimate. As in good or bad...I have no idea b/c I have no other schools' fin aid package to compare it to. But I think it's pretty standard...there's still a good chunk of loans.

i just received an email! yay go susie! just thought yall would like to know. 🙂

Congrats on the UCLA MD acceptance! 👍 Sorry to hear about the MSTP decision. I know where you're coming from, I think if i didnt get in at UCLA's MSTP i would probably be doing the same as you since i liked UCLA so much, and only had one other MD/PhD acceptance. I know it's not an ideal situation to be in, but in the long run I really dont think it will matter much. 🙂

Thanks for the info WhiteRussian, and congrats to you also. I just wanna wish you and all the traveling mudphuds a safe trip.

I called the office and asked about the whole confusion about the Sunday brunch thing. Every student who comes on Saturday is invited for the Sunday brunch. It will actually be 2 different times...1 at 11 and the other at 1:30 since space is limited. It will be off-campus (near the airport actually) at a doctor's house! That sounds fun.

Also, in case you didn't know, if you're traveling from 50 miles away, they are providing traveling reimbursement up to I think, if I remembered correctly, $250 (don't quote me on that). They haven't worked out the details yet, but most likely, you'll just forward them your receipt info later on...

And, they do provide housing for second look weekend. If you want a student host, when you fill out the rsvp form, in the comment section, you need to put that you're requesting student host.

Don't ask me why the heck they didn't include ANY of this in the info they sent us 🙄

haha...glad we finally put that mystery to rest.

Damn I was hoping that we were actually done sleeping on peoples floors tho, and that they'd put us up in a hotel instead. Oh well...guess one last sore back for old time's sake won't kill us.

Thanks for the info waterlily I was wondering about who was invited to the secret brunch.

on a side note, just to salt my wound Mallory from the mstp office, just sent me one of the mudphud's schedule for friday accidently. apparently someone who was accepted has the same first name as me.. ouch. You guys get a wine and cheese session! Drink it up for me!

I feel so much less of a freeloader being an SDN Angel now, hehe...

Not sure if you guys know but, Dr. Hall is the head of the disadvantaged admissions committee E...

Yup, I also did it so I wouldn't have to empty out my pm box.

Second-look weekend looked VERY far away, especially for us from the first batch of acceptances...its approaching pretty quickly now. 👍

Can you believe its already been almost two months since we found out??? Good luck to people still waiting!

Sorry Blunt, wish I could make it out tonight but working 👎 , have fun at revisit! Is it tomorrow?

Weee I successfully made it up to the Tiverton House at UCLA!!! Just thought I'd take advantage of the wireless and say Hi to everyone! Even had some time to meet some friends at the Westwood Brew Co. for some drinks. (missed you Kathy 😉 ) Anyway, see all you MSTP guys in the morning, and can't wait to see everyone else in 2(!!!) weeks!

So how was it? I'll be there in two weeks, maybe we could get a little preview.

It was a blast! Tons of great food and drink. They really took us all over LA, from Venice Beach and Santa Monica, all the way up to Malibu, and even a hike up Temescal Canyon to get a great view down on the whole city. And of course we went all around Westwood as well. Most of the agenda was MSTP-specific (which was good so we don't have to have a repeat of the same info at both revisits)...we got to meet with a bunch of potential thesis advisors, have individual counseling meetings with the Directors, meet a bunch of current students, go over lab rotation plans for summer, etc. They also gave us a tour of each of the models at Weyburn Terrace. They're all pretty sweet and pretty much brand new. The average space per person in the 2BR and Townhouse is bigger than the studio, as would probably be expected. Some of them do have balconies, but it is random and there is no way to request it. I think the best part of the trip, though, was actually meeting some of our future classmates...especially getting to finally put faces to the screen names of all you guys here on SDN.

As far as our MSTP class, they accepted about 30 of the 92 people who interviewed. 21 were at the revisit (a few more are still interested, but couldn't make it). I think they said about 8 people (out of an expected class size of 12) are definitely committed so far. To me, it seems doubtful that they will have to touch the MSTP waitlist.

I just want to add that UCLA IS AWESOME 😀 😀 I coudn't be happier. Incredible community and facilites. Friendly and amazing faculty, current students and future students! I'll see the rest of you in a couple weeks!

I am just curious, Bluntman or White Russian, what happens if more than twelve MD/PhDs out of the thirty that they offered positions to, actually accept UCLA's offer? Might they take twenty? Or is it first committed, first admitted. It doesn't matter since I am not one, but it seems like they took so many for the number of spots that they want to fill.
And I am so excited that you both had such an awesome time this weekend. I can't wait for two weeks from now!!

They said they'd just deal with it and go to the dean of the med school to find other sources of funding. They actually acted like it would be kinda a good thing, cause it would show how successful/prestigious the program is.

Another question to you MD/PhD types. Are there many straight PhD students who take the same classes as the med students? (I am just trying to sort of figure out how large our classes will be, now that you mention that we may have more than the twelve MD/PhDs.) (But it has not dampened my enthusiasm. 🙂 )

hi useful ucla people!

i just completed my sir/slr stuff, and i can't log in to the ucla system (like to complete a housing application, for example). does anyone know how long it takes for the system to recognize you once you do your sir/slr?

thanks!

adam

I think it took about 48 hours. Try Tuesday?

thanks for all the info so far. has anyone gotten a final word on the white coat ceremony dates? also, anyone find a link to a 06/07 academic calendar for geffen md students?

thanks again

I dont think any straight PhD's take any med school classes, since it's not really designed for them or relevant to them. And if there are more than 12 MD/PhD's it's probably bad news for MD only waitlist kids because i think most med schools are pretty strict about total enrollment and the MD waitlist is where how can cut the total class down to a size they want. From speaking with a lot of the other prospective students my best guess is that there will be around 16-18 MD/PhD's, but we'll see

The white coat ceremony is on August 11th. (as per paradisedoc's correction)

edit: And here's the link to where the calendar will be. It's not up yet though.

I agree. While nobody is going to say "No" if PhD students want to sit in on med classes, they already have a whole separate set of courses to keep them busy that is specific to their PhD track.

Yeah, there are definitely no pure PhDs in the classes. Glad you had a good time, Bluntman! 👍 I can't wait to meet everybody --- if not at the second look, then definitely in August. I got a cushy research position for the summer so I'll be around when you guys start. 🙂

Can't wait to meet you too! We (MSTP kids) start at the beginning of July. Do you know whose lab you're going to be in for the summer? Are you thinking of turning it into an MS or something like that, or is it just for fun/$$$?

p.s. hope you get through exams ok! 🙂

I called the UCLA Admissions office to find out if the White Coat Ceremony for the Med Students is the same as that for the MD/PhDs and the woman in the office said that the white coat ceremony this fall (summer) for MD Geffen will be at 3PM on Friday August 11th, at the end of the first week of orientation. Just wanted to pass on the information to decrease (or increase) confusion.

Guess they pushed everything back a week. (there is no separate white coat ceremony for MSTP students) I'm stoked cause now cause this means I might actually get to take a quick vacation! Thx for the good news paradise!

Wow, so the MSTP-ers start early. I'll definitely have to hang out with you guys. 😀

The research is just for fun and money. It's actually really interesting. I was all set up to do clinical research involving a new multiple myeloma medication, but something awesome came my way and got me to change my plans. Basically, the Doctoring curriculum is getting a huge makeover and I'll be helping out with it --- creating new PBL cases, writing new scripts for the standardized patients, performing in instructional videos, improving the training for doctors/residents who work with medical students, etc. Sounds like a blast to me!

That sounds like a great opportunity! Do you know what their goals are with all these changes? And any idea if our generation will get to see the fruits of your labor...or will it be implemented in future classes?

Can I just share an experience I've had? I started this thread so I reserve the right to hijack it, hehe.. Does anyone notice that MD's youve interacted with prior to UCLA acceptance start to treat you differently now they have discovered youve been accepted? I know its logical, but it's the strangest feeling to have attendings suddenly blabbing freely to you! 👍

First it starts with any school that you have been accepted to. Then, with some schools (i.e. Michigan, UCLA, UCSF, etc.) you get another wow-factor. I think its funny more than anything. Before I was accepted anywhere, I was shadowing a resident, and an attending thought I was a medical student...he just went off about some disease, expecting me to know everything. Luckily, because of the research I am/was doing, I understood almost everything. Yeah I get what you mean though, its great to have more expected out of you. Definitely a good thing.

Hey guys just wanted to say heads up from Washington DC. I'm pumped for second look weekend... I'm deciding btwn UCLA and Michigan and am hoping for something to clarify my decision in the next couple of weeks. Any advice/helpful lines of reasoning for an east coaster would be much appreciated! Either way, looking forward to meeting second lookers.

Hi WorldDoctor,
I'm actually in WashingtonDC now too..and matriculating at UCLA. For that reason, I think you should do the same!! 🙂 I dont know too much about Michigan, but what helped me decide was breaking it down into different factors: location, proximity to family, med school curriculum style, type of city, cost of living, happiness of students observed during interview, and a whole buch of more factors for md/phd programs. But ofcourse, you hear this everywhere and I firmly believe in it-- its all about the gut feeling.......

happy decision makings! see you in a couple of weeks...by the way, are you still in school or working?

nocturnalraj said:

Definitely true. I also was considering the University of Michigan (w/VERY good scholarship/grants), but I already withdrew. Its an awesome school, but California is where I want to be at (California resident), and UCLA really provides the same opportunities (except maybe global health). Good luck with your decision!

World- Welcome. Glad to have you coming out to Cali! In re: your question...I've got one reason to toss in: the Pacific. Try getting a view like this in Michigan. 😎

Yea I definitely feel you on this one Kathy! Good, but a bit weird indeed. From my perspective, I've actually noticed it the most with PhD researchers. Before, they would talk to you about their research etc., but now they are literally clamoring over each other to get you into their lab.

It's a five-year project, and I believe this is the first or second year. I'll be helping to revise the third-year Doctoring curriculum, so there's a good chance that you'll get to experience some of it! The goal is to increase the number of behavioral health topics covered in the curriculum. For example, this year was the first year that there was increased emphasis on fetal alcohol syndrome --- there was a new lab, PBL case, and standardized patient, none of which were in last year's curriculum. It's an important topic, but it was not represented very much in the past.

I'm posting when I should be studying.

Great! Sounds like some really cool improvements to me...and it's so neat that you'll get to be a part of it. But a standardized patient for fetal alcohol syndrome eh?...didn't know babies could act! (hehe j/k I get what you mean. 😉)

And yes you should be studying...I hardly saw any MS1/2s when I was up there this weekend cause it was all finals finals finals. 😛
