UCLA Class of 2010!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

for those that went to 2nd look, what was the general feel you guys got on the commitment level of the students? Were there a lot that were iffy about UCLA still? I'm just asking to see how the WL movement will look.

At the 2nd look. I met many undecided students (way more than I thought there would be) which surprised me. So I'm sure that the WL will move quite a bit.

For the cat, I think it can be done if you can hide it well enough. When we were touring Weyburn the lady giving us the tour just discovered a tomato plant growing right in the middle of a courtyard (looked like it was there for a while). So if someone could grow a tomato plant right in the middle of a courtyard in plain sight unnoticed I don't think it will be hard to hide a cat.

I'd say 50% were already set on going to UCLA, 30% were still deciding but leaning towards UCLA, and 20% were still deciding but likely leaning elswhere. My numbers may be off but that is the impression i got (also there was probably only ~100 people there rather than 160). Also I learned that they dont overaccept for the class, so they only give out as many acceptances as there are spots for the class, until people start withdrawing, which is mainly around may 15th. In fact they said that 20-30% of the class is people from the waitlist, so you should have decent odds of getting pulled off the waitlist. Good luck 👍

What up UCSD homie! Do I know you? I graduated spring 2005 and was Bioeng and Molecular Bio. You?

Nice to see many going to UCLA on this forum. Recruitment day was a blast! I feel a little jilted about Weyburn though. 1k/month for that small a place? Oh well... i guess they gotta make room for all of us.

Anyone play a musical instrument? I'm bringing my guitar. We could all jam sometime 🙂

Yea it's kind of a shock when you first see the price. But when you do the math and factor in all the utilities you're getting included (power, water, gas, internet, cable tv...which would easily be $150/month at a non-UCLA place), and the location that is in Westwood and close to campus, you'll find that it's actually a pretty good deal. Plus you get to live around all of your peers, which to me is a huge plus since it'll allow you to become close buddies with our class. My only/biggest gripe is that they make you pay so much extra for parking. But hey at least that includes an afternoon/nite pass for the main campus which should come in handy.

How much is parking? I may just leave my car at home and get a bike if its too costly.

Oh hey! The housing timeline says they're emailing housing offers tomorrow to those who applied by the deadline. I would've wanted a studio but I didn't what the plans were so I just checked all of them lol.

Yeah, I feel jilted bout Weyburn too. I saw the studio and it was REALLY small. I walked into the room expecting to round the corner and find some more space, instead I ran into the closet. And why does the bathroom have so much useless space? They could have used that space to add four more feet to the "bedroom" area. I like Weyburn because of the convenience and neighborhood, but I'm not sure if it's worth a thousand plus a month. On the other hand, it would be nice to live close to other first years.

Oh, I play the piano/keyboard. Music is such a great stress-reliever. It would be fun to get some people together and play. Hmm...

Last I heard it was $75/mo. That was for last year though, so who knows...it may well have gone up. 🙁

Wookey said:

Parking is an additional $70/month. A lot of current students told me that they rarely used their cars the first two years. It's only a necessity starting your third year when you're doing your clerkships at different hospitals. Also, there's apparently a Ralph's and Whole Foods only a few blocks away from Weyburn so grocery shopping should be relatively easy. A bike might not be a bad idea, although I don't remember seeing anyone riding a bike at UCLA.

Hahaha...I hear you on that one! Think they allow us to sublet out part of our bathrooms? 🙄 That being said, the student whose place I visited actually did use this space pretty well...he used it for his laundry hamper and a cabinet for random crap like detergent and cleaning stuff. But yea I'd still much rather put the space to use as part of my bedroom errr bed-nook!

Bluntman said:

Even getting a bike stolen every 2 months would still be cheaper lol! During the Q & A, Dr. Parker said he rode a bike once until it got stolen

There're lots to do in Westwood. I don't think we'll need to go very far to have fun.

Spoken by a true MSTPer! Yeah that does kind of suck, I was hoping parking would be included w/rent.

Is it really 1000 a month now for the Weyburn studio? Christ, that's insane for on-campus housing. I thought San Francisco was bad...

Hmm, about the band, maybe we could make a little extra rent on the side. I'll bring my vocal chords.

Touche! :meanie:

But on a more serious note: I really did want to see those damn tar pits!!! Oil bubbling out of the ground...prehistoric animals...pits of death...this is the kind of cool **** that kids go nuts about!

I agree, it's a lot of money and the apartments are small. Anything in Westwood is going to cost a ton, though, and Weyburn is a good deal relative to other apartments in the area --- especially since utilities/cable/Internet are included. Plus, it's great to live close to your classmates.

Someone mentioned that the parking pass is good on campus for the afternoons. I just wanted to add that it can be used all day on Saturday and Sunday.

Heh, I went on a field trip to the La Brea tarpits in HS. I don't remember anything from that trip lol. You're not missing much...

The Getty is awesome though! If you like impressionist art or Italian architecture that the place to be. I've been there twice and I want to go again this summer but they're booked until the end of time 🙁

Ahh man..... gotta get some sleep for work tomorrow. Programming half asleep is no good which is on par with taking the MCAT with no sleep which I did for some reason. I'll get to go on SDN from time to time when my boss is not looking, yay!

On that note, I hate to sound like the lame-ass, but how "loud" is Weyburn? Are people generally pretty quiet given it's graduate housing? I tend to like it better when I can chose to party and then leave (light sleeper).

Also, does anyone have any idea whether most of the other apartments near UCLA are full of undergrads?

I had also heard from the housing department yesterday that the housing assignments would be sent May 23rd - not sure if this guy new what he was talking about.

I've heard that they have loud parties and such in the quads sometimes...but I've also heard that Weyburn is VERY well insulated/sound-proofed that you don't hear anything. You'll be fine...

Assuming they're on schedule we should get our offers today.

It was great to meet some of you guys last weekend...i had a really good time, although i got stuck in hollywood (very fun) so i couldn't make it to the "evening out on the town," but it sounds like it was fun. i guess we'll all just have to make it up this summer. i am not planning to live in weyburn (bringing the b/f with me) anyone know anything about off-campus housing? it is so expensive in westwood!
i was not totally sure about UCLA before the weekend, but i had such a great time, love the program, and got my financial aid offer from the other school i was thinking about, and definitely am planning to come to UCLA next year! i am so excited to meet all of you (again?).
awsome.

i'm bringing my guitar and a very lousy pair of vocal chords...

I think we were in the same PBL group. Your bf was there too. Nice to see you here! Do you play acoustic, electric? both? I have a Fender Strat and an Alvarez acoustic. I love them so much I think I will carry them to my grave. We should jam sometime with NycBallet and SnarfBlatt 🙂

I haven't had any problems with noise. 👍

yeah, i would love to start playing with people. i have my dad's old acoustic. i am not very good, i have been letting the practice time slide this year for some reason. i love playing though...we should just make a band and become rock stars. that's always been a personal dream of mine. besides, we can always make some $ to help with rent like someone mentioned earlier.

I hear that on the practice time. I'm the queen of vocal atrophy right about now, but it could be a great respite from medicine/science again.

Did you all get the housing offers today as per the schedule? The person I spoke with at the housing department told me to hurry with my application as the "deadline" was the 23rd. Though this guy later proved to be fos on some other issues/concerns.

has anyone heard of a deposit we need to put down or paperwork we need to sign to let them know we're coming next fall? i know a lot of schools ask for a deposit by may 15.
or is it just that they're UCLA, so they figure of course we're all going to go so we don't need to tell them?
sorry for the bad grammar! 😛

To my knowledge and according to the MSAR, there is no deposit to hold a place in the class. Yeah, probably b/c they are...UCLA. 😉 The only paperwork I have heard of was the letter you must send confirming your acceptance of their offer.

I didn't get the offer either. Sry to get your hopes up, they must be behind schedule. Maybe it's because Admissions was late this year.

Lol Nice! Drummers are the hardest to find. We have vocals, keyboard, guitar, and drums. Anyone play bass? This is pretty cool! I know Duke has a med student/faculty band. We could start one up at UCLA 😎

What kind of music do you guys like to listen/play? My favorite bands are Led Zepp, Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers, NIN, and most recently the Sundays (the band with that song "Here's Where the Story Ends" among others).

Hey! I don't think so. I am still at UCSD finishing up my 4th year... Biochemistry/Cell Biology. Can't wait till graduation! I have 4 midterms this upcoming week... =/

Awesome Doc! I play rhythm guitar fine. Still need to brush up on lead. What music are you into Doc? I know a couple of Chili Peppers song like Under the Bridge, Californication, and Scar Tissue. I love that clean CA surf rock sound.

Whats up everyone! It's been awesome hanging with you guys/girls at the UCLA recruitment weekend and on this thread! Unfortunately after a crap load of thinking/deliberatin' I have decided to go to Stanford (which barely won over LA). I will definitely still hang out on this thread (and I hope thats aight) because there aren't too many kids from Stanford on SDN.

I'm just really really glad to have made a decision, and now I know where I'm going! Hit me up if any of you are up in PA. 🙂

Hi! I was a very late interview at Drew, and I just got my phone call from them on Thursday. I took the weekend to decide and faxed them my Intent to Register last night. So ... I'm in!

I'm a non-trad originally from Santa Barbara, but I'm currently living and working in Oakland. I have an s.o. who's an ER doc, and two adorable rats who are smart enough to be MDs, but lack the opposable thumbs.

I can't wait to surf again.
